European nightlife has a new capital. At a massive industry gala in Amsterdam, the inaugural Europe’s 50 Best Bars list was officially unveiled—and Greece absolutely cleared the board, locking down the top two spots on the continent.

Out of 50 elite venues spanning 22 cities, six Greek bars made the cut, proving that the local scene is currently unmatched.

The Historic One-Two Punch

  • No. 1 in Europe: Line Athens. Operating out of a former art gallery, this powerhouse took the ultimate crown.Celebrated for its circular, zero-waste philosophy and house-fermented flavors, it is officially the best bar on the continent.

  • No. 2 in Europe: The Bar in Front of the Bar. Right on its heels, this high-energy, open-air pedestrian spot in Athens snatched the runner-up spot, famous for its daily-evolving menu and vibrant street-side atmosphere.

The Big Picture

While Athens stole the show with a spectacular podium sweep, the rest of the country shared the glory. The final Greek lineup features Barro Negro (No. 13), Baba au Rum (No. 14), and The Clumsies (No. 30) holding down the capital, alongside Gorila making waves for Thessaloniki at No. 33.

The Spirits Business

The rest of the list mapped out a fierce continental rivalry. Italy flexed its hospitality muscle with nine entries on the board (led by Moebius Milano at No. 6), Spain proved its nightlife royalty with six spots (anchored by Sips at No. 3), and Paris kept France in the high-end ranks with five venues. The new index highlights a mix of legendary capital city staples and emerging, boundary-pushing destinations across Europe

There is something that happens when you arrive in Greece.

It is not just the light — though the light here is extraordinary. It is not just the sea, or the scent of wild thyme threading through the afternoon heat, or the sound of cicadas in the olive trees. It is something harder to name. A feeling. A deep, quiet recognition that says: I am supposed to be here.

I live in Kos. I have lived here since 2018, and I want to tell you something that still surprises me: I wake up in wonder of this place every single day.

Eight years in, and I still pause at the sight of the morning light stretching across the water. And then I look up — to the small mountain that sits quietly behind the town — and something in me settles completely. I am a mountain girl at heart. The sea moves me, but the mountain soothes me. Both of them together, on this one island, is why I never want to leave. I still feel it — that sense of belonging, that pull, that quiet certainty that this is exactly where I am meant to be. Kos is my safe space. It is home in the fullest, most felt sense of the word.

And I know I am not alone in this. Because almost every guest I have ever spoken with — every person who has booked a retreat in Greece — has described a version of that same feeling.

Greece Does Not Give Everyone The Same Feeling — It Gives Everyone Their Feeling

Here is what I have come to understand over years of living here, travelling across the country, and working with people who come to find themselves on a retreat in Greece:

Greece does not have one feeling. It has thousands.

The feeling of Kos is not the feeling of Santorini. The wildness of the Pelion Peninsula is not the same as the spiritual stillness of Meteora. Corfu, with its lush green hills and Venetian architecture, holds a completely different energy to the raw, volcanic drama of Milos. Crete carries the weight and warmth of an entire civilisation. Koufonisia is small and unhurried and feels like a secret the sea has been keeping.

Every island, every mountain village, every stretch of coastline offers something distinct — and yet, somehow, all of it is unmistakably, undeniably Greek.

What I notice, when I speak to guests who are looking for wellness retreats in Greece, is that the feeling they are drawn to is deeply personal. One person feels most themselves on a hillside in the Peloponnese. Another steps off a ferry onto a small Cycladic island and simply knows — this is it. Someone else finds their version of peace walking the gorges of Crete.

Sometimes it is connected to a memory — a childhood holiday, a moment years ago when everything slowed down and felt right. Sometimes it is a first visit that imprints itself like a homecoming, as though the landscape had been waiting for them all along.

Why Greece Makes Such A Powerful Setting For A Retreat

There is a reason that people have been coming to Greece to seek transformation for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks understood the deep connection between environment and healing — between landscape and the inner life. Hippocrates, who shaped the foundations of medicine on the island of Kos, believed that where you are has everything to do with how you heal.
That wisdom still lives here.

When people come on a yoga retreat in Greece, or a mindfulness retreat, a fitness retreat, a walking retreat — the landscape participates. The quality of the light, the rhythm of the sea, the warmth of the air, the silence of early morning — all of it creates conditions for the kind of stillness that real inner work requires. Guests consistently describe feeling more open here, more willing to let go, more capable of rest.

Greece does not just host retreats. It holds them.

Why Guests Return to the Same Retreat — Year After Year

I speak to retreat hosts regularly. Across all the retreats I have worked with — different locations, different styles, different durations — there is one thing that is almost universally true:

They have guests who return.

Not just once. Some guests have attended the same retreat in Greece three, four, five years in a row. And when I ask the hosts about it, they rarely seem surprised. Because they feel it too — that particular magic that forms when a group of people gather in a specific place, with a specific person, in Greece, and something opens up.

It is a combination of things that are difficult to separate:

The Host

A skilled, genuine retreat host creates a container — a safe, nourishing space — that guests step into and feel held by. The relationship that forms between a host and their returning guests is quietly extraordinary. It is built on trust, on being seen, on knowing that the person guiding you genuinely cares about your experience and your growth.

When you find a host who truly gets you, you do not let go of them easily.

The Atmosphere

Each retreat has its own rhythm and energy. When that rhythm resonates with who you are — or who you are becoming — it is hard to leave behind. You carry it home with you. And then, six months later, you find yourself thinking about it again. Counting down.

The Land

Greece has a way of participating in the retreat experience. The landscape is not just a backdrop — it is an active presence. Guests describe feeling a connection to place here that is unlike anywhere else they have travelled. There is ancient wisdom in this soil, and people feel it, often without being able to explain why.

The Feeling of Belonging

Perhaps this is the most important one. For many people — especially those who arrive solo, or who have never quite felt at home anywhere — a retreat in Greece offers something they did not know they were looking for. A place. A community. A version of themselves that feels right.

That feeling of belonging is not something you forget. It is something you return to.

Some People Find Their Place in Greece & Never Quite Leave

I am one of them. I came to Kos and I stayed — because I could not imagine waking up somewhere that did not feel like this. That did not hold me the way this island holds me.

But I have also watched guests discover their own version of that feeling. A woman who has returned to the same retreat in the Peloponnese every spring for four years, because something about that particular hillside, that particular teacher, that particular morning light through the olive trees — it resets her. It reminds her of who she is.

A couple who booked a wellness retreat in Crete almost on a whim and now plan their entire year around going back.

A solo traveller who was nervous about her first retreat and is now on her third — different island each time, different host, but the same unmistakable thread running through all of it: this is where I come back to myself.

The Retreat Is the Door. Greece Is the Room.

A retreat, at its best, is not just a programme of classes and meals and scheduled activities. It is an invitation to feel something. To pause long enough for the place to reach you.
Greece is extraordinarily good at this.

It has always drawn people seeking something beyond the ordinary. Philosophers came here to think. Pilgrims came to be healed. Artists came to see the light. And now, people come on yoga retreats, wellness retreats, fitness retreats, spiritual retreats — to rest, to reconnect, to move their bodies, to grieve, to celebrate, to begin again.

Whatever brings you here, Greece meets you.

And for many people, once Greece has met them in that way — truly met them — they find they keep coming back.

Not because they need to escape. But because they have found something here that feels like home.

For this special feature, we had the opportunity to meet with Christina and Danae, co-founders of MOOVA Global Mobility, with  Christina’s mother, Kathy, founder and previous owner of Celebrity International Movers.

Together, they bring over half a century of experience in moving, relocation, and customer care. We spoke about family legacy, entrepreneurship, the evolution of international relocation and how MOOVA Global Mobility  is combining traditional values with a fresh, modern approach to helping people move and settle around the world.

You’ve spent more than 25 years in the moving and relocation industry. Was there a specific moment when you thought, “It’s time to build something of my own?”

Christina:
Yes, I believe now is the right time. Moving has been a major part of my life. When I began my career in this industry, I literally fell in love with it. I am now ready to bring my expertise, my knowledge, my passion, and my strong global network into creating something of my own, a new generation of Global Mobility solutions.

Throughout my journey, I have learned that relocation is not just about moving belongings. It is about people, trust, and creating a smooth transition during important moments in their lives. I’m ready to make a meaningful impact on this industry by crafting  a more personal and happy relocation experience for people around the world

Kathy:
For me, relocation has always been deeply personal. Before I became a relocation professional, I was an expat myself. I moved from the United States to Greece before relocation services existed in the way they do today.

When my family arrived, there was no support system, no relocation guides, no destination services, and very little practical information available. We had to figure everything out ourselves.
That experience stayed with me and eventually led me to found Celebrity International. My goal was simple: to provide other international families with the support, guidance, and reassurance that I wish my own family had received when we arrived in Greece.

Today, through MOOVA, that same philosophy continues. We help people navigate not only the logistics of a move, but also the emotional and practical realities of building a life in a new country.

Danae:
My path into MOOVA is different, and I think that adds something special. I come from boutique hospitality and customer satisfaction, where every detail affects how a client feels.

I have lived between New York, London, and Greece, so international movement has also been part of my life. With Christina’s deep industry experience, Kathy’s long-standing global mobility knowledge and my hospitality background, we wanted to create a moving company with a different energy: professional, warm, organized and human.

The relocation industry is highly competitive. What gap in the market did MOOVA aim to fill?

Christina:
The gap we identified is really around quality and the overall client experience. We believe people deserve real value for their investment, not just a moving service, but a complete relocation solution.
With MOOVA Global, we want to create a true one-stop-shop by combining destination services with the actual moving process, so clients have everything they need under one trusted partner.

A key difference for us is the personal approach. We believe every client should have one dedicated point of contact, someone who understands their needs, guides them through the journey, and genuinely cares about making their relocation as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Kathy:
Exactly. A good relocation service should not be one-size-fits-all. Some families need full support from arrival to settling in. Others may only need help with specific parts of the process, such as home search, school guidance, paperwork, or orientation.

Because we understand the process so well, we can advise clients honestly on what they truly need and what they do not. With our experience and industry knowledge, we are able to find smart solutions that can also save money for the client.

We do not believe in offering standard packages that include services people do not need. Instead, we design relocation packages that are effective, practical, and tailor-made to each client’s real needs.

Danae:
For me, the gap is between simply “moving things” and truly managing a transition. Our target client is someone who wants to move without hassle, without confusion, and without unexpected surprises along the way. They want to know there is a person next to them handling the logistics, coordinating the details, and keeping them informed.

When creating MOOVA, what were the non-negotiable values or principles you wanted the company to be known for?

Christina:
We want MOOVA to be known for quality, delivering a service that provides true value and consistently exceeds expectations.

For us, quality is built on strong principles: respect, trust, transparency, and responsibility. These values guide the way we work with our clients, our partners, and our global network.

At the end of the day, we want every client to feel confident that they are in the right hands, with a team that genuinely cares about their move or their relocation journey.

Danae
I would add consistency. In moving and relocation, quality cannot depend on the size of the move or the type of client. Every client deserves attention, respect, and proper guidance.

Another important value is personal contact. Systems are useful, but people still need to speak to someone who understands the situation and can guide them with experience.

You’ve helped countless people move across borders and start new chapters. What have those experiences taught you about people and change?
Christina:
They have taught me that change is exciting, but it can also be emotional and stressful.

Even when someone is moving for a good reason — a new job, a new home, a better opportunity, or a new life in Greece — there is usually a moment where they feel overwhelmed. After so many years in this industry, I know that people need reassurance, guidance, and thorough communication.

Over the years, we have often connected clients even after their relocation, especially women who are trying to build a new life, make friends, and feel part of a community. Many of these women clients have become close and long-lasting friends.

Kathy:
One thing I've learned over the years is that relocation is a process, not a single event. The transition doesn't end when the boxes arrive—it truly begins then.

In my experience, it typically takes two to three months for individuals and families to feel settled and comfortable in their new environment. Having professional relocation guidance can make all the difference.

We've seen firsthand how families who work with our relocation consultants adapt more quickly, overcome challenges with confidence, and successfully embrace their new lives. Our goal is not simply to help people move, but to help them feel at home.

Danae:
For me, change always has two sides. There is excitement, but there is also uncertainty. That is why relocation requires emotional intelligence. You need to be a people’s person. Clients must feel trust and security from the very beginning. They need to know that someone is listening, understands their concerns and is by their side throughout the process.

Can you share a memorable relocation or moving story that reminds you why you love this industry?

Christina:
There are so many small moments that remind me why I love this industry. It can be treating a little girl’s teddy bear like a VIP client, helping children find their toy box before anything else or watching the family dog approve the new home before everyone else.

One story I will never forget was a pregnant client moving to New York. Her shipment got stuck at the port of Antwerp, and of course the timing was very sensitive. Through our global network, one phone call helped get the container back on track and ensured the shipment arrived before the baby.

Afterwards, we received flowers and a photo from the family showing the baby sitting on one of our moving boxes. Moments like that are priceless. They remind me that we are not only moving furniture. We are helping people feel safe, settled, and ready to begin again.

Kathy:
One of the most memorable relocation cases I handled involved a woman who moved from the United States to Greece with her husband, an executive who had been relocated by the multinational company he worked for.

They were in the middle of completing their immigration and residency procedures. At that stage of the process, their travel options were restricted. Until their documentation was finalized, they could only travel within the European Union or return to their country of origin, the United States.

Everything was progressing according to plan when she received unexpected news: her daughter, who was living in Africa, had gone into labor several weeks early.

She desperately wanted to be with her daughter and her new grandchild, but without the completion of her residency documentation, she could not travel to Africa. The stress was enormous. On one hand, she was trying to settle into her new life in Greece. On the other, her family needed her thousands of miles away.

Our team immediately stepped in. We worked closely with the relevant authorities, monitored every stage of the application process, coordinated the required documentation, and did everything possible to help move the case forward efficiently.

When her documents were finally issued, she was able to board a flight to Africa and be by her daughter’s side, helping care for her premature grandchild during those critical first weeks.
A few months later, she told us something I will never forget: "You didn’t just help me relocate to Greece. You helped me be where my family needed me most."

What is the biggest mistake people make when relocating to a new country?

Christina:
Many people assume relocation is simply about finding a house, but that is only one part of the process.

Once a property is selected, there are inspections, negotiations, contracts, utility connections, registrations, documentation, and a long list of practical details that need to be handled correctly.

Some clients come to us after they have already started the process themselves. They may have found a property online or completed part of the paperwork, but because they are experiencing the process for the first time in Greece, they often discover unexpected complications along the way.

Ultimately, our role is not to take control away from clients. It is to protect them and make the process easier, faster and far less stressful.

Danae:
Exactly! The biggest mistake is trying to do everything alone.

When people relocate, they are already dealing with a major life transition. They are starting a new job, helping their family adjust, finding their routine, and adapting to a new environment. It is very easy to become overwhelmed by the number of tasks, decisions and administrative requirements involved.

My advice is always to focus on what matters most: your family, your work and your new life. Let experienced professionals help with the process.

Kathy:
I think one of the biggest mistakes people make when relocating to a new country is assuming that the process and lifestyle will be the same as in their home country. Every country has its own culture, way of living, housing standards and expectations.

For example, someone relocating from Texas might expect to find a large house with a big yard near the center of Athens, but the reality of living in Greece is very different. Understanding these differences before moving is extremely important.

That is where having the right guidance makes a big difference. A successful relocation is not only about finding a new home. It is about understanding the destination, adapting to the new environment and having a partner who can help you make informed decisions and feel comfortable in your new country. We have developed guides for families and children because we understand that every member of the family experiences the move differently.

MOOVA places a strong emphasis on personal support and client care. In an increasingly automated world, why is the human touch still so important?

Christina:
A move involves personal belongings, memories, deadlines, emotions, and often a lot of pressure. People want to know that there is someone responsible, someone who understands the situation, and someone who will pick up the phone when needed.

This human connection is also important within our global network. Meeting our counterparts in different parts of the world and building real relationships with them helps us enormously. It allows us to offer better service to our clients and also adds to our global knowledge. That is why we invest heavily in travelling, meeting our agents, and maintaining strong international partnerships.

Danae:
Of course, there are services we are formally responsible for, but when people move to a new country, unexpected situations arise all the time. Sometimes a family needs advice that falls outside the original scope of the project. Sometimes they need a recommendation, a connection, help understanding a local process, or simply someone to point them in the right direction. We want people to feel that they have a trusted partner by their side, not simply a service provider.

Athens has become an increasingly attractive destination for international professionals, investors, and digital nomads. What changes have you observed in recent years?

Kathy:
Years ago, relocation services in Greece were mainly connected to corporate assignments. Today, the picture has changed. We see more professionals, entrepreneurs, investors, families, and remote workers requesting relocation support because they want to avoid bureaucratic delays and begin their new life as quickly and smoothly as possible.

People now understand that relocation services can save them time, stress, and unnecessary mistakes. Instead of trying to figure out every process alone, they can have guidance from the beginning and focus on settling in, working, finding the right home, and enjoying their new life in Greece.

On the moving side, we also see a change. Shipments are often smaller than before, because many people are moving more flexibly. But even a smaller shipment still needs proper planning, coordination, top quality and care.

Danae:
I think Athens is moving from being seen as a destination to being seen as a base. That is an important shift. Athens is becoming more international, but it has not lost its personality. It is still warm, layered, sometimes chaotic and very alive.

Christina:
In recent years, we have seen a notable increase in international professionals, investors and digital nomads choosing not only Athens, but also the Greek islands as their base. This has been made possible by the improved infrastructure on many islands, better connectivity, remote working flexibility and the overall quality of life Greece offers.

At MOOVA, we are increasingly supporting relocations to island destinations, including more remote locations. Our specialists are readily available to assist with every stage of the process, from planning and logistics to settling-in support, making relocation to the Greek islands smoother, more organized and less stressful.

What makes Athens such a unique city for someone relocating from abroad, and what do you think surprises them most about life here?

Christina:
Athens offers something that many international professionals are increasingly looking for: quality of life.

It is unique because it combines so many different lifestyles within one city. When helping clients relocate, we always explain that there is no single "best" neighborhood. The right choice depends on whether someone is relocating with a family, working remotely, commuting daily, or looking for a more urban lifestyle.

Many international families are drawn to areas such as Kifissia in the northern suburbs or Glyfada on the Athens Riviera because of the schools, amenities, and established international communities. At the same time, professionals, entrepreneurs, and digital nomads are increasingly attracted to central neighborhoods such as Kolonaki, Plaka, or even the increasingly vibrant Kypseli.
One of the biggest decisions for newcomers is not simply where to live, but how they want to experience Athens.

Kathy:
Greek culture has taught us to help people no matter what. This is something clients feel very strongly when they arrive. They may expect paperwork, traffic, or practical difficulties, but they are often pleasantly surprised by the human side of life here.

A neighbor may help, someone at a local shop may remember them, or another parent at school may offer advice. These small moments help people feel less like visitors and more like part of a community.

One thing we care deeply about is helping people build connections. Relocation does not end when the boxes are delivered or the residence permit is issued. People need friends, activities, schools, communities, and a sense of belonging. That is why we often help clients discover local clubs, activities, international communities, and networks that make the transition easier.

Danae:
I think many people arrive with one image of Athens and then discover there are actually many different versions of the city. Some people want the sea, some want neighborhood life, some want culture and nightlife right outside their door. Part of our role is helping them find the version of Athens that feels most like home.

That is what we want to help with at MOOVA: not only the move, but the transition into real life here.

Before we wrap up, is there one final message you’d like to share with anyone considering a move to Greece or working with MOOVA?

Christina:
My message to anyone considering a move to Greece is that relocation is a big life decision and having the right support makes all the difference. It is not only about moving your belongings. It is about starting a new chapter with confidence and peace of mind.

At MOOVA Global Mobility, we are here to make that transition easier by combining experience, expertise and genuine care. We bring together the knowledge of the relocation and removal industry, strong global partnerships and a personal approach where every client feels supported.

Whether you are moving to Greece or relocating anywhere in the world, our goal is to be your trusted partner every step of the way.

Danae:
For me, MOOVA brings together something very powerful: long-standing moving expertise, relocation knowledge, hospitality-level service and thoughtful communication.
We understand both sides of relocation — the technical side and the emotional side — and that is what makes our company different.

Greece offers an incredible lifestyle, a strong sense of community, beautiful surroundings and opportunities to create a wonderful life here. With the right support and a little patience, everything eventually falls into place.

Kathy:
Quality, experience and strong work ethics are the most important factors when selecting a mover or a relocation professional. MOOVA Global Mobility has based their foundation on these core principles promising to make  your next move our mission.

Thank you, Christina, Kathy, and Danae, for taking the time to speak with us and share your journey. We wish MOOVA Global Mobility continued success as it helps individuals and families start new chapters around the world.

As more travelers look beyond Greece's busiest holiday hotspots, The Times has spotlighted 17 islands that offer a quieter, more authentic escape. Rather than focusing on famous destinations such as Mykonos and Santorini, the British publication encourages visitors to discover places where traditional village life, unspoiled landscapes and genuine hospitality still take center stage.

According to the feature, Greece is home to thousands of islands, yet only a small number attract the majority of international visitors. Many lesser-known islands remain largely untouched by mass tourism, often because they require an extra ferry journey or are simply less publicized. For travelers willing to venture a little farther, the reward is a slower pace of life, peaceful beaches and a stronger connection to local culture.

The list includes Aegina, Astypalaia, Anafi, Lipsi, Andros, Folegandros, Nisyros, Syros, Meganisi, Alonnisos, Agistri, Milos, Patmos, Kythira, Kastellorizo, Serifos and Sifnos. Each destination was selected for its distinctive character, natural beauty and ability to offer visitors a more relaxed island experience.

The article highlights the unique appeal of each island, from Andros' scenic hiking trails and lush landscapes to Nisyros' volcanic scenery and Alonnisos' protected marine park, home to rare Mediterranean monk seals. It also praises Folegandros for its secluded beaches, Syros for its elegant architecture and cultural heritage, and Sifnos for its celebrated food scene and culinary traditions.

A common thread throughout the feature is the growing demand for meaningful travel experiences. Rather than crowded resorts, today's visitors are increasingly drawn to destinations that offer tranquility, authentic local culture and spectacular natural surroundings. Many of the islands featured are known for beaches that can only be reached on foot or by boat, making them ideal for travelers seeking privacy and a sense of discovery.

For those planning a Greek island getaway in 2026, The Times suggests that some of the country's most memorable experiences can still be found away from the well-trodden tourist trail, where timeless traditions and warm hospitality continue to define island life.
When embarking on the Solo Retreat program at Ariadne's Garden of Spiritual Arts, the journey is designed to be deeply personal, yet it beautifully opens the door to shared, unforgettable connections. As part of our experience there, we were fortunate to step beyond the estate gates and journey together to Delphi.

Nestled in the beautiful surroundings of Galaxidi, Ariadne's Garden is a 20-acre estate designed for connection, reflection, and transformation. More than just a property, it is a living tribute to Gaia where the whispers of ancient myths meet the stillness of the Mediterranean breeze. The venue organizes retreats centered on decoding ancient Greek mythology through intuitive art workshops and embodied mindfulness practices, offering a true "playground" for the soul, the artist, and the seeker.

Given its close proximity to Delphi, one of the most sacred and historically significant sites of the ancient world, a visit to the Oracle felt like a natural extension of our retreat experience. And there could have been no better companion than Dimitra Natskouli herself. As a visionary artist, dance therapist, and the curator of the space, Dimitra created Ariadne's Garden from her living bonds with the Gaia archetype, designing it as a fertile ground for those seeking to align body, mind, and spirit.

Her work focuses on guiding guests toward a deeper experience of "self" through shadow work and archetypes, beautifully combining the Delphic maxim "know thyself" with the simplicity of nature’s care. With her depth of knowledge, passion, and gift for storytelling, she personally oversees every aspect of the venue and transformed what could have been a simple excursion into a profound journey through mythology, philosophy, history, and personal reflection

The Road To Delphi

Our adventure began long before we reached Delphi itself. As we made our way through the mountains, Dimitra took us to a hidden gem near Agia Efthymia, where crystal-clear waters flow year-round at an astonishing 8°C. The refreshing stop was exactly what we needed, and it immediately reminded us that Dimitra seems to know every magical corner of the region. Standing beside the icy spring waters, surrounded by nature, felt like the perfect way to begin a day dedicated to ancient wisdom and sacred places.

From there, we continued towards Delphi, making a stop at a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the entire valley. The panoramic views stretched endlessly before us, offering a magnificent introduction to the landscape that has inspired pilgrims, philosophers, and seekers for thousands of years. Sitting together in this beautiful spot, Dimitra began preparing us for what was to come.

She explained that the area was originally known as Delphys, an ancient Greek word meaning "womb" or "belly." Some believe the name derives from the shape of the landscape itself, while others connect it to the worship of Gaia, the Mother Earth goddess, during the Mycenaean period. This sacred connection to the feminine, to creation, and to the earth set the tone for everything that followed.

As we gazed across the mountains, Dimitra immersed us in the mythology of Delphi, speaking of Apollo, the god to whom the sanctuary would later be dedicated, and of the many layers of history, spirituality, and symbolism that have made Delphi one of the most important sacred sites of the ancient world. By the time we arrived, we already felt deeply connected to the stories, myths, and energy of the place we were about to explore.

Filled with anticipation for what lay ahead, we continued our journey with a stop for coffee at the beautiful Amalia Hotel. With sweeping views across the valley, it proved to be the perfect place to pause and take in the landscape from yet another breathtaking vantage point. The atmosphere felt wonderfully nostalgic, with a charming 70s aesthetic that somehow suited Delphi perfectly. As always, Dimitra had chosen exactly the right spot, not only for the views, but also for allowing us a moment to absorb everything we had learned before stepping into the sacred world of Delphi itself.

Hidden Gems & Secret Places

Later, upon arriving at Delphi, we visited the sacred Castalian Spring, where pilgrims once purified themselves before consulting the Oracle. Ancient visitors would wash in its waters before entering the sanctuary, preparing both body and spirit for the encounter.

As we touched and tasted the water ourselves, we noticed something remarkable; the mineral-rich water tasted almost milky, creating an atmosphere that felt both ancient and otherworldly.

From there, Dimitra took us to another hidden location, a place known to very few visitors. It was here that we had the opportunity to make our own symbolic offering to the Oracle. Before doing so, we participated in a small purification ritual using Palo Santo. Each person was invited to leave behind something symbolic—something of value, whether material or emotional—and to enter the sacred space with greater clarity and intention.

It was a simple but deeply meaningful experience that allowed us to connect with the spirit of Delphi in a personal way.

Discovering The Museum

Our first official stop was the Archaeological Museum of Delphi.

The museum is extensive and rich with treasures, but thankfully we had Dimitra to guide us through its most important exhibits and stories. Rather than simply moving from object to object, she helped us understand the deeper meanings behind what we were seeing.

Among the fascinating pieces was the representation of the Triple Goddess—the 3 faces of the moon embodied through Hecate, Selene, and Artemis—opening discussions about ancient understandings of femininity, cycles, and transformation.

IMG 3096

We stood before the magnificent Sphinx of Naxos, the mythical creature with the head of a woman, the body of a lion, and the wings of a bird of prey. Dimitra explained how it was dedicated to Pythian Apollo by the people of Naxos and secured for them the privilege of promanteia, the right to receive oracular consultations before others.

One particularly memorable moment came when we stood before a reconstruction of Apollo's face. Beside him stood his sister Artemis, and Dimitra encouraged us to look directly into Apollo's eyes. It was surprisingly powerful.

IMG 3084

She spoke about Apollo not simply as the embodiment of masculine order, but also about his softer, more feminine dimensions. We explored how the Greeks understood divine energies beyond rigid categories and compared Apollo's complexity to that of Dionysus. These conversations opened doors into mythology that many of us had never considered before.

Dimitra delighted us with countless "mythological Easter eggs." She explained how ancient people could identify Apollo not through labels but through his symbols, the lyre, his posture, and other visual clues embedded within the artwork.

She also shared fascinating insights into the lives of the statues themselves. One particularly memorable detail was why so many ancient sculptures appear to be missing their genitalia. Contrary to what many visitors assume, they were not sculpted that way. Rather, during later Christian times, many statues were deliberately damaged as part of broader efforts to suppress pagan imagery and beliefs. It was one of many small but fascinating details that made the ancient world suddenly feel much more alive and human.

We also encountered the Kouros and, for a brief moment, adopted the iconic Kouros stance ourselves, exploring what the pose represented in terms of idealized youth, balance, and human potential.

IMG 3092

Standing before the statue of Antinous, we listened to the remarkable story of Emperor Hadrian and his beloved companion. Through this sculpture, history suddenly felt deeply human.

As often happened throughout the day, mythology seamlessly flowed into philosophy. Discussions expanded into Plato's tripartite soul—the logistikon (reason), thymoeides (spirit), and epithymetikon (desire)—and how these concepts still resonate today.

These philosophical detours became some of the most memorable parts of the experience.

At one point we also stopped at the museum café to replenish our energy and absorb everything we had learned before continuing onward.

The Sacred Site Of Delphi

Leaving the museum behind, we made our way toward the archaeological sanctuary itself.

Dimitra first guided us to what she described as one of the most energetically concentrated places within the site, the location associated with the earliest Oracle traditions. Nearby stood the sacred laurel tree, connected to the Pythia and the rituals through which she entered prophetic states.

Hearing these stories while standing in the very landscape where they unfolded thousands of years ago was extraordinary.

Eventually we reached the Temple of Apollo itself, the spiritual heart of Delphi. There, seated opposite the temple, we spent time simply contemplating.

The temple was once home to the most famous oracle of the ancient world. Kings, generals, philosophers, and ordinary people travelled immense distances seeking guidance from the Pythia, whose cryptic responses would influence wars, politics, and personal destinies.

To sit before the ruins today is to feel both the weight of history and the mystery that still lingers there.

IMG 3119

Although visitors can continue higher toward the theatre and stadium, Dimitra explained that in many ways this point represents the true culmination of the Delphic journey. Here, facing Apollo's temple, one has already arrived at the heart of the sanctuary.

Cats, Dogs & Unexpected Delights

Like all great adventures, our day included some lighter moments as well.

We were greeted by several friendly cats throughout the site, each seeming perfectly at home among the ancient ruins. And of course, there was the famous Delphi dog, the beloved local mascot whose relaxed presence has become part of the sanctuary's charm.

Even in a place filled with gods and legends, these little encounters brought plenty of smiles.

A Final Surprise

After our journey concluded, Dimitra had one final gift for us. Before heading back, we had the chance to spend some time in the village of Delphi itself, a charming destination that is often overlooked by visitors eager to see only the archaeological site. Nestled on the mountainside with stunning views across the valley, the village has a unique character of its own and was well worth exploring.

It was here that Dimitra led us in a beautiful yoga workshop, allowing us to move and breathe against the backdrop of that majestic landscape. It felt like the perfect ending to the day: a moment where the ancient energy we had just experienced was integrated directly into the body through deliberate movement and mindfulness.

Why This Experience Was So Special

What made this day extraordinary was not only Delphi itself, but the way Dimitra brought it to life.

She did far more than provide historical facts. She wove together mythology, archaeology, philosophy, symbolism, spirituality, and humour into a living narrative that made every stone, statue, and story feel relevant.

She knew the hidden springs, the secret viewpoints, the quiet places away from the crowds, the best coffee spots, and the most meaningful moments to pause and reflect.

Perhaps most importantly, she encouraged us not simply to learn about Delphi, but to experience it.

We left with a deeper appreciation for ancient wisdom, a greater connection to the myths that continue to shape our culture, and plenty of stories we will be sharing for years to come.

Like so many details she shared throughout the day, it was one of those fascinating insights that made us see the ancient world differently.

Delphi is undoubtedly one of Greece's greatest treasures. But experiencing it through Dimitra's eyes made it something even more special: a journey not only through history, but into myth, meaning, and ourselves.
