The selection process for the Special Scholarship established in honour of the Antetokounmpo brothers is complete and scholarships were awarded to two successful applicants!

It was in June 2017, at a moving event held at the Onassis Cultural Centre Athens that Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo, looking back at a difficult childhood and the obstacles they had faced starting out in life, dared to speak openly about important social issues like racism and the difficulties they had faced in their effort to acquire Greek citizenship. During the event, the Onassis Foundation joined forces with the brothers and announced the establishment of the Special Undergraduate Scholarship "One of a Kind" for the children of immigrants living in Greece – just like Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo.

As the Onassis Foundation Director of Culture, Ms Afroditi Panagiotakou, explained at the time: "The symbolic establishment of this scholarship serves a dual goal: to provide a kid, who either does not have Greek citizenship or who acquired it within the last five years, with the opportunity to study and make their dreams come true and to send out a message in favour of a more open civil society”.

Ultimately, the selection process produced not only one but two successful candidates: Katerina Ampntel Saient and Jacub Maciejewski, two students from Sepolia! Although the original intention was to award the scholarship to one high-school graduate, the Onassis Foundation, taking into consideration all the selection criteria, decided to award it to the two prevailing candidates: Katerina and Jacub.

According to the terms and conditions of the scholarship eligible candidates must be graduates of Greek public General and Vocational High Schools in the 4th municipal district of Athens – the same area where Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo started out on their unique journey and endeavours. And even though Katerina and Jacub may not share the same talent for basketball, they know what they love in life, they have dreams, and they have shown through their academic success that they have the 'superpowers' they need to make those dreams come true.

Excited with the results of the scholarship, Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo wanted to congratulate the two winners through the Onassis Foundation announcement.

Giannis Antetokounmpo stated: "I would like to congratulate Katerina and Jacub; may they achieve everything they dream of. Above all else, may they make the most of the opportunity they have been given, keep up their hard work, and reveal their superpowers to the world. Sport is a wonderful path to follow, but I believe education can open up even more possibilities. Which is why I am happy and proud that two young people will have the chance to do something I could not—go to university—and have the Onassis Foundation at their side while they do it. The scholarship established in our honour will ensure they have the peace of mind they need to succeed. I would like to also thank the Onassis Foundation for giving us the chance to join forces for this good cause".

For his part, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, who had the chance to meet the two scholars in person, declared: "As I said after the event at the OCC in June, this is an outstanding initiative, because it gives the children of immigrants, children like us, the chance to move forward and make progress towards achieving their goals. I would like to send my congratulations to Katerina and to Jacub along with a message to all the kids who have, for whatever reason, had a difficult start in life: don't give up! Find your superpowers within and believe in your dream."

On the basis of their performance in the Higher Education Entrance Exams, Katerina Ampntel Saient, who is of Egyptian descent, was admitted at the department of Russian Language and Literature & Slavic Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Jacub Maciejewski, who is of Polish descent, was admitted at the Department of Information Technology of the same University. Despite having had a difficult start in life, thanks to their passion, commitment, ethics and, of course, hard work, they managed to stay focused on their goal and get admitted into university. The Onassis Foundation will be at their side throughout their undergraduate careers, helping them through the "One of a Kind" scholarship to make their dreams come true and reach as high as they can go.

It wasn't just the Antetokounmpo brothers' success that inspired our collaboration, it was also the qualities the two Greek athletes embody: modesty, competitiveness, passion and a willingness to work hard.

Animal Adoption Organizations In Athens

Adopt, don't shop! There are so many stray animals in Athens and around Greece who need loving homes. If you are looking for an animal to adopt, please see the organizations below that help with rehoming stray animals.

KAZ Shelter for Stray Animals

The KAZ (Shelter Stray Animals) is a non-profit association founded in 1988.  The shelter's activities rely on the love and voluntary actions of its members, donations, and sponsorships. KAZ offers care and treatment to stray animals at its privately-owned facilities in Markopoulo, Attica. The shelter operates exclusively as a transit center for the animals and not as a place for their permanent residence.

To 'Virtually Adopt A Dog' please click HERE.

Animal Welfare Society Of Marathon

All the cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies are vaccinated and are given with health papers, while adult animals are also neutered. The society does not provide a place for fostering animals, nor is an animal shelter. Rescued animals are taken care of in houses and yards of volunteers until they get well and then they return to their initial neighborhoods unless they are adopted.

Adoptions are finalized with an “Adoption Deed” signed between a liable member of the society and the prospective guardian according to Greek Law. The fees for each animal’s vaccination, deworming and microchip tagging are €30 and are lifted only in the case where the animal has passed through the Municipality’s strays management program, otherwise is paid in full by the prospective guardian.

Please click HERE for more information.

Nine Lives Greece
Nine Lives Greece is a network of volunteers dedicated to the reduction of stray cat overpopulation through trap-neuter-return programs.

Each year they get hundreds of stray cats in Athens neutered/ spayed (1,577 cats in 2016 alone) and they help improve the quality of life of some 450 street cats through daily feeding programs and veterinary care. They also try to find responsible homes for as many stray or abandoned cats and kittens as possible.

Please click HERE to view the cats available for adoption.

Save A Greek Stray

Founded on Erietta Kourkoulou-Latsis’ private initiative Save A Greek Stray is a non-profit organization whose volunteers share one vision: a country where pets will be stray no more whilst given the opportunity to live a decent life within a loving domestic environment. In order to assist with the implementation of the above goal, SGS has created a shelter for stray animals, offering them a safe haven until their family comes along.

Please click HERE to see the pets up for adoption.

Dog's Voice

Dogs' Voice is a non-profit organization that supports the work of 112 animal welfare organizations throughout Greece. It has the largest network for promoting stray dogs in responsible adoptions, implements an integrated urban animal protection program at the local government level, and provides legal support for animal abuse complaints.

The organization's mission is a Greece without strays; a country where citizens respect animals and their rights.

Greek Animal Rescue

Greek Animal Rescue is a UK-based registered charity, which aims to help the abused, neglected, stray and injured animals of Greece.

GAR was founded in 1989 and works to alleviate the suffering of animals in Greece by supporting a number of animal shelters, sterilizing as many dogs & cats as funds allow, and finding homes for the lucky few in the UK and several other EU countries.

Cat Rescue Athens

With the motto "Until the last cat is loved", Cat Rescue Athens is a voluntary union for live-saving and adoption promoting for stray cats.

They help street cats with sterilizations, they give sick and/or injured and weak cats and kittens shelter and care, veterinary treatments, and medications, and provide food for struggling street cats.

Hellenic Animal Welfare Society

Collects injured and ill strays in its animal ambulances and takes them to its clinic near Athens airport for treatment, sterilization, and rehoming; works with Attica municipalities on neutering and vaccination programs; organizes information campaigns on TV and other media.

A Little Shelter

Founded in 2020 by Katrina Tsantali and Tonia Sotiropoulou, a little shelter is a functional temporary accommodation facility with decent and safe living conditions and a large courtyard area. The shelter's actions include hospitalizations, treatments, sterilizations, and of course adoptions, always in collaboration with a very experienced veterinary team.

The procedure involved in adopting a stray animal is simple and efficient. In order to adopt a stray animal, citizens need to submit an adoption application, statutory declaration, and a copy of their state identification card. Applicants can choose their pet via the City's database which contains all of the stray animal's details (photograph, serial number tag, medical history etc) or visit the stray lodgings at Markopoulo, Attica on Saturdays from 09:00 - 14:00.

It should be noted that stray animals which are made available for adoption are of excellent health as certified by a medical exam and blood tests. Individuals interested in adopting an animals can telephone at 210 5278014, 210 5278009, or 1595 or email at adespotaath@cityofathens.gr.

Kimolos Trail Running Race

The 1st Kimolos Trail running race was successfully organised, for the first time, on Sunday 3 June 2018. Besides the running routes, the Kimolos Trail event had an educational seminar and a movie night event.

The first race of theCycladesTrailCup 2018 was held in Kimolos island on 3rd June. The 1 st trail running race: Kimolos Trail had two routes, 21 and 9 kilometers long. The starting and finish line was the Chorio village and the 21km had a unique solidarity for runners. Besides the already difficult rocky terrain, the strong Aegean sun made the race even more hard for the participants.

Athletes form all around the world and many Greek islands had filled the registration form pretty early on. The total number of registrations reached the number 95, which is a lot for a small island of the South West Aegean Sea. Athletes from islands like Andros, Sifnos, Milos and Syros came to run alongside visitors from Italy, Ukraine, France, Canada and the Republic of Congo! On Sunday 3 June, 62 athletes started the race but only 50 reached the finish line on time!

The Ukraine-Russian athlete,RamanBurakov, was the big winner of the 21km trail race, by reaching the finish line at 2 hours and 38 minutes and winning for the first time a Cyclades Trail Cup race. Last year, in 2017, he sucesfully finished 5 out of 6 races of the series and was awarded 2nd place in the Cup.

The second place of Kimolos Trail was awarded toPanagiotis Kapsanisrepresenting myathlete and N.A.O. Kithiron and the time of 2 hours and 47 minutes. In the third place of the 21km race, came Evangelos Zigouris with the time of 2 hours and 53 minutes. In the women category,Maria Bisketzi from Syros island won the 21km race with the time of 5 hours and 20 minutes.Korina Stiakaki finished in second place with 5 hours and 30 minutes.

In a special category, the organizers awarded the 1st man and woman, local to Kimolos island. The first woman wasMaria Logotheti and the first manTheodoros Kotsonis with the time of 1 hour and 27 minutes and 1 hour and 7 minutes accordingly.

Every race and course offers score points for Cyclades Trail Cup, determined by the new CTC_PointSystem. The athlete that earns the highest amount of points by the end of the year will be the winner of Cyclades Trail Cup 2018.

TheKimolos Trail 21km awarded you83 points and theKimolos Trail 9km awarded you33 points. Considering thought that the sun was really hot that day, a 5% points will be awarded to each participant. This means that

"This kind of certainty comes but just once in a lifetime," Clint Eastwood says to Meryl Streep, in a distinctive scene in the remarkable romantic film. And we are certain of your love for the 8th Athens Open Air Film Festival, which began its trip around town, opening its gates on the evening of Monday the 4th of June, with the screening of Clint Eastwood’s beloved film "The Bridges of Madison County" at the Byzantine and Christian Museum.

In a festive but also especially emotional screening the popular Festival marked the beginning of the cinematic summer in the idyllic courtyard of the Byzantine and Christian Museum. The audience did an early start, and until the film began, the Museum’s forecourt was plenty with more than 600 viewers who sat even on the floor, but many also stayed for the screening standing up!

The Athens Open Air Film Festival’s Artistic Director, Loukas Katsikas, welcomed both audience and collaborators by mentioning that The Athens Open Air Film Festival started eight years ago, with a bold idea. It dreamed of our town as a magical open-air cinema and moved on to realize this dream, by transforming some of the most beautiful and most unexpected locations of Athens – neighborhoods, streets, parks, archaeological sites, hills and beaches – into improvised open-air cinemas, enriching the experience of watching films while simultaneously seeing our city in a different way.

Next, Loukas spoke about the opening film, which was also the opening film of the first "Opening Nights" Festival in 1995. He also extensively referred to this year’s program and the special screening at the Little Theater of Ancient Epidaurus with the promise that the Festival will continue in special places in and outside of Athens, in an effort to renew itself and constantly break ground.

Concluding his speech, he warmly thanked for their steady and longtime support:

The Minister of Culture, Ms. Lydia Koniordou, the City of Athens Cultural, Sport and Youth Organization and its President, Mr. Konstantinos Bitzanis, the U.S. Embassy in Athens and particularly Ms. Eleni Alexaki, the chief of the Exhibits Communication and Education department of the Byzantine and Christian Museum, Mr. Periandros Epitropakis as well as the space keeping staff, the collaborators from the Athenian Brewery.

The screening was attended – among others – by the former Minister, Ms. Louka Katseli, the director Yiorgos Zois, the radio producer Mary Retsina, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival’s Director, Orestis Andreadakis, the actor Nicholas Aggelis and the Hellenic Film Commission’s Director, Ms. Venia Vergou.

After the screening, the viewers enjoyed cold Fischer beer in the wonderful garden of the Museum’s restaurant, Ilissia.

Fischer, the most beloved beer won't be missing from the biggest summer film celebration in Athens, which returns for its 8th year. Fischer is the official sponsor of the 8th Athens Open Air Film Festival.

The 8th Athens Open Air Film Festival is carried out in collaboration with the City of Athens Cultural, Sport and Youth Organization including screenings, throughout the whole summer, in the city's special corners, archaeological sites, parks, squares and some of the most beautiful museums and spots in Athens, with free entrance to the public.

For more information about the 8th Athens Open Air Film Festival, please visit: AOAFF

The 6th Petit Paris d'Athènes is already underway!

The festival will take place from the 4th to the 14th of October 2018 and will be in the general area of the centre of Athens including Omonoia square, Larissa Station and Peloponnisos Station, Metaxourgeio, St Paul square and Victoria square. These are the neighborhoods where many streets are named in French and have served as cultural meeting points between the cosmopolitan and folk culture of Athens with foreign traditions of refugees, travelers and visitors.

The festival’s theme is “May of 1968. Fifty Years Later...” (Mai 1968. Cinquante ans après...) Petit Paris d'Athènes includes music, art and photography exhibitions, street art, theatre and variete, performances, street shows and parties, lectures, “tables rondes” and “rendez-vous sociaux”, guided tours and educational programs.

The festival is co-organised by the Athens Art Network, the City of Athens Culture, Sports and Youth Organization, and the Region of Attica. It is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and has the support of the French embassy and the French Institute of Greece.

The festival's goal is to mend through art and culture some of the most abused neighborhoods in Athens and to allow young artists to thrive. In essence, it is a 10 day celebration of art and culture in which more than 500 artists and people of intellect from Greece and worldwide participate at multiple selected places (such as streets, squares, parks, theatres, conservatoires, galleries, bistros, schools, neo-classical buildings, hotels and many other alternative spaces).

In 2013 the festival was dedicated to Albert Camus for the 100th anniversary of his birth and in 2014 to the Βelle Époque and the start of World War I. In 2015 the theme was “The culture of Café and Bistros” with a special nod to rive gauche in post-war Paris. In 2016 the festival was about Team Spirit and Arts and lastly, in 2017 Petit Paris d' Athènes was dedicated to Woman in Europe.

In 2018, the festival’s theme is “May of 1958. Fifty years later...”

How did the French revolution of May in 1968, without any racial, political, cultural or societal discrimination, but with a strong international impact, become a landmark in 20 th century history, influence and continues to influence societal struggles and cultural expression both in France and around the world? Art, either militant for a cause or simply as a product of a free mind, deeply marked the revolution of ‘68 has been a movement of timeless value.

For all artist and cultural groups interested in joining the 6th Petit Paris d' Athènes, the proposed artwork should be inspired by the revolution itself or the general ideas and values as well as the main and side actions of societal struggle to this day.
