This summer the design platform It's all, oh so souvenir to me! and the cultural space T.A.F / The Art Foundation are joining in a multi-faceted project that finds a roof at Normanou street in Monastiraki. The new partnership begins with Oh!@TAF, the shop that was created on the premises of T.A.F to host the exciting collection of Greek design by It's all, oh so souvenir to me!

Just this month, T.A.F and oh so souvenir to me! had their first launch party that was an exhibition held for the fifth consecutive year. They presented 50 new proposals, enriching the already existing collection of It's all, oh so souvenir to me! which counts over 80 collaborations and hundreds of souvenir objects.

The idea behind It's all, oh so souvenir to me! was born in the summer of 2013. Since then, four major exhibitions have been organized - Athens (July 2013, June 2014), Nisyros (September 2014), Benaki Museum (March 2015) and Thessaloniki (June 2016) - which gathered the proposals of more than 80 Greek designers on the redefinition and redesign of an extremely controversial object, the souvenir. What does it mean, what is proposed, how it is manufactured, how can it differ from what is offered by the tourist market?

What has emerged is a line of articles with Greece as a reference, that have a variety of functional qualities. The collection draws on the souvenir taking inspiration from different social, political and cultural themes, while displaying modern Greek identity by escaping the trivial patterns of the category, combining usability and innovation, inventiveness and humour.

On the design platform the creators come from the whole range of design. Architects, product designers, fashion and accessories designers, photographers, visual artists, ceramists, graphic designers, are constantly enriching it with the addition of new objects and new collaborations, always focusing on supporting and promoting Greek creation and creativity.

This summer, the Greek souvenir sails from Monastiraki to travel all over the world.

With principles based on the Olympic ideal and "fair play", from the first year in 2013 the event generated innovation and had a key role among sports tourism events. We owe huge gratitude to the people of the region and Costa Navarino for all they have done to make Navarino Challenge a success. Santorini Experience was completed with absolute success for a 3rd consecutive year, on the enchanting island of the Cyclades. The top sports tourism event in Greece, with a TV broadcast in 87 countries through the FOX Sports TV network, was completed with a record of participations in the running and swimming races with more than 1500 participations.

Popular abroad!
“Santorini Experience” is officially the event of the Hellenic Swimming Federation (having the auspices for the second year in a row) with the most popularity abroad, for amateur and professional athletes in Greece, while in running follows the events organized by the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) such as the Athens Marathon.
At the same time, foreign participations surpassed every precedent, as athletes from around 40 countries were "hosted" in Santorini. Indicatively, the attendance was extremely high from Australia, UK, Germany, France, USA, Canada, China, Russia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and Hong Kong.

An international ambassador by the side of the established and promising Greek swimmers!
The Hungarian swimmer Attila Manyoki, the recognized athlete in open water swimming with several successes and a member of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF), took part for the first time in the event. The presence of swimmers was dynamic with top professional athletes such as the Greek open water champion Kelly Araouzou and members of the Greek national team, Antonis Fokaidis, Giorgos Arniakos and Dimitris Negris. In addition, for the first time in an open water swimming race, more than 10 Greek champions took part.

In Santorini, we enjoyed the new young Greek leading open water swimmers who follow the steps of Spyros Gianniotis (he swam in Santorini in 2015 and 2016 before his withdrawal) under the instructions of the federal coach Nikos Gemelos.

The technical director of the swimming race not only applied the new 1.1 mile open water swimming route (from Skaros to the old port of Fira) on Sunday morning, due to the difficult weather conditions, but also supervised its conduct so that everything would be done in accordance with the regulations of FINA and the Hellenic Swimming Federation. Swimmers started in groups and not all together, following all safety rules.
Of course, there were 50 specialized escorts in the water who contributed, with the assistance of Lifeguard Patrol, which also had several lifeguard boats, the people from Santorini who helped with their own boats, the Voluntary Lifeguards of Santorini, Atlantis Dive Center and above all Santorini Boatmen Union that transferred and protected the organization of the open water swimming.

The traditional sweet of Santorini, melitinia (offered by Manos Pastry Shop) as well as seasonal fruits were offered to the swimmers after the end of their race.

Best innovative sports tourism event!
For the first time in a sports event in Greece, Samsung as the official technology partner was present with its innovative services through the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, combined with the Gear 360 camera and Gear VR, enrich the experience of those attending and watching the event with unique content at 360 degrees.

The award-winning event did not stop its innovation here. The GoPro 6 action camera was first used in Greece, with its simultaneous arrival at a world premiere. The GoPro HERO6 Black, with its breathtaking analysis and waterproof design, has especially helped in having the best and most impressive shots in the swimming and running activities.

Relevant photos are available HERE!

A difficult and demanding route!
Hundreds of athletes were present in the running routes. The runners participated in the 5km “Aristides Alafouzos”, 10 km and 15 km running routes, having as a “background” the unique images of the volcano overlooking the Caldera and passing through the settlements of Imerovigli, Firostefani and Oia. The 5km route took this year's name “Aristides Alafouzos” in memory of the great benefactor of the island. Indeed, the nephew of the late Alafouzos, Mr. Giannis Haidemenos, said after the starting signal he gave together with the Mayor of Santorini, Nikos Zorzos, on the 5km route: “I am very pleased because the effort made by Aristides Alafouzos is justified, being a sponsor in the whole island of Santorini all these years. It is a great honor for us and very important that this race takes place in his memory”.

Sports for all!
Excitement was spread to the young children at the 1km running race held on Friday, October 6th, with the support of Vikos, at Panthiraikos Stadium in Fira, with the presence of the Olympic and World Champion at 400m. with hurdles Periklis Iakovakis (who ran also the 5km) and Greek-American ultramarathon Dean Karnazes, who participated in the 5km and 15 km running races, while he signed his last book at Alafouzos Sport store (sponsor of the event) in Fira. TaeKwonDo lessons were conducted to advanced and amateur athletes by the twice silver Olympic medalist Alexandros Nikolaidis, while the warm-up of the athletes in running was undertaken by the pilates instructor Mandy Perskaki.

Easy access and promotion!
Participating athletes traveled to “Santorini Experience”, with the official airline partner of the event, Ryanair that offered the possibility of connecting Athens with Santorini with direct flights from 13 cities abroad. The leading Greek shipping company Blue Star Ferries, as a sponsor of the event, facilitated the ferry transfer by offering a 50% discount on the ferry tickets and vehicles of the participants, assisting the travel of Greek and foreign athletes.

The foreign participants and visitors approached the event mostly in groups this year, showing the results of the promotion which was made through the tourism expo in Sweden, the campaign implemented in Germany targeted at the first autumn school holidays and the targeted communication strategy in China, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and America was effective.

Local Government Co-operation and Private Initiative

Online interactive platform with virtual tours of destinations across Greece.

A new initiative for the extrovert promotion of the Greek culture by the E-Learning of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and currently in the making with everyone’s support through the act4Greece crowdfunding program by the National Bank of Greece.

How does the world see Greece and its culture? Do we share the same perspective? How do we overcome the stereotypes and the distance they create between us? Can we communicate, come closer and get to know each other, learning the real Greece? Can we capture the image of our country to share it with the world?

A new initiative implemented by the E-Learning of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) entitled YouGoCulture invites us to "enter the picture", even with one euro, and create the images that we will share to travel Greece across the world ... through its culture.

Because ... Culture is not only (everything) that made us proud yesterday! Culture is also all that makes us proud of what we are today! Culture is everything that make us Greek every day. Because Greece means culture ... And culture is us!

The Action
A platform made up of familiar materials ... Materials that shaped the "soul" of Greece, its culture, over the centuries ... Everything that made it and still makes it special. A platform made of images ... Made with knowledge, artistry and genuine passion to take Greece even farther ... but at the same time to greet Greek and foreign friends from all over the world, "welcoming" to this corner of the planet all those who are interested in knowing the “real” Greece.

A free access, public and nonprofit platform, which has already begun its mission. It captures the charm of unique destinations in the Peloponnese and in Attica, and is committed to highlight the dual character of cultural heritage - modern lifestyle all over the country and can achieve it with the power of many, with the minimal contribution of us through Act4Greece.

The aim is to raise funds of €65,000 to produce the original audiovisual material of the destinations specified below.

Purpose - Benefits - Approach
An act of extroversion that relies on the generosity of Greeks and aspires to be a practical example of re-launching against the widespread crisis. On the side of the productive forces, the new generation and the local communities, together with the Greece of innovation and the representatives of the real economy, the productive sector and the sustainable entrepreneurship, the YouGoCulture platform contributes in the common pursuit of progress and development, both at national and local level, through the use of symbolic capital and comparative advantages of the country for the promotion of our cultural asset and tourist product.

We travel to every corner of Greece to meet its people. We follow their paths. We hear their thoughts. We get to know their faces and record what makes them special, highlighting the culture that makes them Greek.

People and monuments share their "stories" so that Greece can share its story ... with the world! They narrate memories of their past and moments from their present so that Greece can narrate its future to the world. Together, in a special narrative through the "ecumenical language" of culture, they create a rare mosaic of images and knowledge that reflects the authentic characteristics of Greek identity of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Come to share experiences ..., art ..., knowledge ..., sports ..., innovation ... To share dances ..., festivals ..., but also struggles ..., tastes ..., smells ..., memories ..., feelings ..., traditions ..., customs ..., landscapes ..., moments ...
... so that Greece can share its values ..., ideals ..., hospitality ..., democracy ..., philosophy ..., theater ..., nature ..., light ..., its blue ... its invaluable wealth ...

Let's share our present ... so that Greece can share its past, but also its future...

Because every story, our story, is invaluable ... and it's worth sharing it!
An educational programme run by the Onassis Foundation helps children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) familiarize themselves with the procedures involved in air travel.

Have you ever wondered how easy or difficult it is for a child with autism to cope with the various procedures involved in travelling by air? What about having to process the multitude of sensory stimuli with which they are bombarded in an airport feels like? Do you know how you could help if you found yourself next to a child or adult with Autism Spectrum Disorder and they reacted in an intense and unexpected way brought on by airport-related stress?

For a child or adult with ASD, air travel isn't always about recreation or relaxation, as both children and adults are often required to travel long distances for crucial treatment. Unfortunately, the stressful nature of air travel (the electronic arrivals and departures boards, the noise, the constant movement from one place to another, the waiting and delays, the take-off and landing procedures, possible in-flight turbulence etc.) very often mean these vital trips cannot be made. It is no surprise that parents of children with ASD are hesitant about choosing to travel by air. The fact that roughly 1 in 68 children in the general population are currently diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum makes this an issue that impacts on a lot of people. Indeed, given that our approach to autism is both a reflection of our culture and our education as individuals, it is ultimately relevant to us all.

Intent on enabling children with ASD to spread their wings and prepare to fly, the Onassis Foundation has created an innovative educational programme, "Boarding Pass to Autism", which consists of the following elements:

1) an air procedures simulation for children with autism
2) an educational resource for therapists and parents of children with ASD which consists of social stories
3) a training course delivered to staff at Athens International Airport
4) a leaflet created to raise air travellers' awareness of autism.

The educational programme was created by the Onassis Foundation in association with Athens International Airport under the academic aegis of Athens University and with the generous support of AEGEAN. The programme's two academic leads are Dr Aggeliki Gena, a Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Psychology at Athens University, and Dr Katingo Hadjipateras-Giannoulis, a Clinical Psychologist
Affiliate Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

The programme was presented in detail at a scheduled Press Conference held in the Media Centre at Athens International Airport on Thursday 29 March 2018.

1) ON APRIL 2, INTERNATIONAL AUTISM DAY, CHILDREN WITH ASD WILL SPREAD THEIR WINGS AND PREPARE TO FLY!

It all started with an open call for participation issued by the Onassis Foundation. The call brought together a group of children who, along with their therapists and parents, set about preparing themselves for air travel by means of an integrated desensitization programme. The programme will culminate on Monday 2 April, World Autism Awareness Day, with the children visiting Athens International Airport, along with their parents and therapists, for an air procedures simulation. The simulation will begin at the entrance to the Departure terminal and include all the stages involved in preparing to fly. The 30 or so participants will end up aboard an AEGEAN aeroplane where everyone—children, parents and therapists—will follow the prescribed procedures and safety instructions that precede take-off. The air procedures simulation gives children and teenagers with autism and their families an opportunity to familiarize and prepare themselves for the various procedures involved in air travel (the security and baggage check etc.) and with the multiple stimuli (from the electronic departure and arrivals boards to public announcements and airport signage). However, the April 2 simulation marks a beginning not an end as the innovative handbook we created for the programme will continue to provide parents and therapists of children with autism with a unique educational resource in the years to come.

2) SOCIAL STORIES HANDBOOK A GROUND-BREAKING EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE FOR PARENTS AND THERAPISTS

The "Boarding Pass to Autism" programme also included the creation of an innovative educational handbook consisting of social stories (Gray, 1991) which could become an important tool in the hands of therapists and parents around Greece. The stories were created by the Onassis Foundation under the academic aegis of Athens University.

What are social stories?
They are short predominantly visual stories which present specific scenarios to enable people with autism develop and improve their social understanding. They depict descriptions of a particular situation, event or activity, which include specific information about what to expect in that situation and why.

Using photographs and/or other visual information, Social Stories help improve the behaviour of children by making novel social situations more manageable and predictable. This in turn will enable them to confront challenging social situations and will reduce any potential anxiety and stress.Using photographs and/or other visual information, Social Stories help improve the behaviour of children by making novel social situations more manageable and predictable. 3) TRAINING SEMINARS FOR ATHENS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT STAFF

The programme also included training for both Athens International Airport (via the various service providers) and AEGEAN staff in autism-related issues and the obstacles autism can create for children with ASD and their parents, particularly in the airport. A seminar was run on four occasions, allowing 200 members of staff whose positions put them in direct daily contact with travellers at "Eleftherios Venizelos" to receive special training. At the seminars, Ms Gena and her associates informed the staff about autism and its specific features. The participants were briefed on the signs that can help them recognize travellers with ASD, and received useful advice on how to identify and deal with ASD-related challenges in the future.

4) TRAVELLING ALONGSIDE AUTISM: A LEAFLET WE SHOULD ALL READ

The final element of the '"Boarding pass to autism" educational programme is another innovation: the creation of an informational booklet for all travellers. The booklet, which you can find at Athens International Airport (AIA) and in electronic form on the official sites of both the Onassis Foundation and the AIA, provides information on autism and on the obstacles faced by children with ASD. It also provides information on the ways in which you yourself could help make air travel easier for autistic children both in the airport and aboard their flight. The initiative seeks to release the potential of these children while raising public awareness of ASD.
