Monocle Quality of Life Conference
Who hasn’t been asking themselves the big questions about the lives we’re leading these days? Prestige publishing powerhouse Monocle has. And it reckons its global subscriber community of movers and shakers is doing it too.
Monocle founder Tyler Brule (the former Wallpaper magazine chief) is bringing a core team of his editors to Athens in late September to host a three-day symposium that’s pitched as a life audit to help us learn how to hone our quality of life: whether on a personal level; as a company - or entire home town.
The 6th Quality of Life Conference will bring together more than 25 speakers (from newspaper editors and comedians to neurosurgeons and fashion entrepreneurs) for an in-depth probe into the projects, people and best practices that are helping to create dynamic cities around the globe. The roving programme covers everything from cancel culture and how to dress well, to weightier themes such as rebuilding Beirut and the future of flight.
Being tapped to stage this exclusive think tank is a real feather in Athens’ cap. The Greek capital was chosen over other European destinations due to its emerging regional influence as a “city on the rise” and going places.
“New businesses are flourishing, the art scene is thriving and these factors are compelling a generation of diaspora talent to return home, as well as luring ambitious global entrepreneurs who are investing in hospitality, design, technology and manufacturing,” says Monocle.
Monocle subscribers can snap up tickets for 10 percent less than the general public. Sign up for this past-paced rota of panels, interviews and power networking and you’ll also be treated to behind the scenes tours of culture hubs including the Benaki Museum Pireos site and Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as meals at urban hotspots like S.I.X. dogs and a curated trawl of Monocle-worthy shops, ateliers and Greek concept stores.
Delegates will also benefit from special rates of up to 25% off at some of Athens’ most premium hotels: choose from glamorous Athens Riviera resorts, downtown 5-star classics or hip urban hideaways.
Whether you've just arrived in town – or have been here for years – Athens always has new secrets to share!

7th Athens Biennale Eclipse
ECLIPSE, designed to reveal the diverse aspects of the transition we are experiencing now, aims to awaken the audiences’ imagination on the possible parallel worlds and different versions of the future. ECLIPSE features more than 80 artists, both up-and-coming and renowned, from North and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe, with 32 new productions and premieres, in iconic buildings at the heart of Athens.
The 7th Athens Biennale offers an arena to interrogate many of the ideas, queries, concerns, and desires that are frequently not platformed within a Biennial format. In an effort to activate a dynamic cross-cultural discourse, ECLIPSE will highlight the works of artists from the African Diaspora in addition to other artistic voices that have historically been pushed to the periphery. This engagement will be articulated through the use of a “Black Lens” as one of the frameworks. This approach seeks to engage the varying perspectives and artistic practices percolating within the African diaspora. This dialogue will be situated alongside a complimentary framework of artistic interventions that use dynamic manifestations to compose unique practical narratives. Their aim is to strategically address the viewers imagination of potential parallel worlds and futures. Composing a set of spaces that platform ideas such as radical care, interspecies friendship and sonic viewing strategies, ECLIPSE presents a translocal chapter of contemporary thought on how to co-exist within a world differently.

Athens Coffee Festival
The Athens Coffee Festival is a large celebration of coffee and its surrounding culture, addressed equally to industry professionals, home baristas and the general public!
From its very first iteration, in May 2016, the Athens Coffee Festival managed to become one of the world’s finest coffee festivals! The potential of its dynamic is also confirmed by the impressive number of visitors, the statements of satisfaction by participating companies, as well as the positive comments by sector professionals from Greece and abroad. At a time when the coffee market is at the height of its growth, going through its most mature phase, the Athens Coffee Festival is now a reference point for professionals, but also for the general public, interested in learning about all the innovations and market developments, from flagship espresso houses and distinguished Greek and international specialty coffee roasters.
In order to meet the needs of coffee businesses more effectively, the Athens Coffee Festival takes place every year at the end of September, in view of the winter season. This year, Technopolis-Athens, in Gazi, will host the 5th Athens Coffee Festival in September 2021. The aim is to attract as many sector professionals as possible, from every corner of Greece, along with a selection of major international visitors. At the same time, the festival continues to appeal to the dynamic audience of consumers who are coffee aficionados and are interested in the latest trends and developments in the field of coffee.

Climate Change - SNF Dialogues
Following a summer dominated by extreme weather events worldwide and an inexpressible national environmental disaster in Greece, there’s one question on everyone’s minds: Is there time to reverse the destruction humans have brought on the planet, or are we heading towards an inevitable and irreversible global climate crisis? Scientists tell us we may still have a small window of opportunity to halt global warming—not for the years ahead, where warming is all but guaranteed—but for the decades after 2050. Will humanity immediately make the courageous decisions required, knowing that its sacrifices will benefit not the planet’s current inhabitants, but the generations to come?
On Wednesday, September 29 at 18:30 (EET), the next SNF DIALOGUES event invites the public and representatives of the scientific community to a livestreamed open discussion about the future of humanity on a quickly warming planet.
Scientific data in a new report from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, prepared by 234 scientists from 66 countries, confirm beyond any doubt that our planet is getting hotter and that human beings are the cause. The consequences of this reality are already apparent. This past summer saw the first-ever rainfall in Greenland and a temperature of 49.6 degrees Celsius (121 degrees Fahrenheit) in Canada. An unprecedented heatwave hit Siberia and mega-fires broke out in Greece, Italy, Turkey, and the United States while deadly floods plagued Europe and China.

Faced with a climate crisis that seems, to a large extent, unavoidable and irreversible, the challenge now is to explore how to adapt to a new reality where natural disasters occur with increasing frequency and how to take action for future generations.

FokiaNou Art Space: Panagiotis Voulgaris B6
Greece’s most recent lockdown period, with its requirement that citizens notify the government of their movements, provided the setting for a series of interventions in the area of Lycabettus, by Panagiotis Voulgaris. Using the code B6, to declare a venture out for exercise, Voulgaris over a period of about four months created ephemeral geometric works that interacted with the natural pine forest environment: sometimes reflecting light, sometimes becoming transparent and sometimes disappearing. The radial arrangement of work was done using paper tape, which after a short period of time was removed and recycled for use the next day. The play of light, the recording of time, steps and paths, as well as the contact with both nature and other citizens enjoying nature were the main elements of this public work of art that uniquely reflects the special conditions of the lockdown period.
In FokiaNou’s exhibition, a map consisting of photographs, tapes, drawings and plants, as well as a series of raw short videos taken from a mobile phone, document Voulgaris’ lockdown interventions. An installation made of thousands of meters of thread points to all the days, routes and steps needed to create the works. A simulation of the hill of Lycabettus invites visitors of the exhibition to make the journey on foot, in order to make contact with nature and appreciate its importance. In addition, a series of walks will take place throughout the duration of the exhibition.
Panagiotis Voulgaris is a visual artist and curator, and co-director of FokiaNou Art Space in Athens. He holds a Master’s degree in Art and Architecture from the University of East London. He was a resident artist of the European Capital of Culture, Valleta, in 2018 and was a recipient of the STEP Travel Grant from the European Cultural Foundation. His main work is installations and interventions in archaeological sites, old buildings, and public spaces. He has participated in exhibitions and residencies in Greece, Italy, Malta, Sweden, France, Germany, Spain, Hungary, Brazil and the USA.
FokiaNou Art Space is an artist-run project space in the intimacy of a small apartment in an old building in the center of Athens. The space encourages collaborative creative efforts between Greek and foreign artists, thereby promoting and supporting the local art community. The space hosts exhibitions, workshops and projects under the direction of two artists, Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris. www.fokianou247.gr
