Expatistan

The cost of living is a common topic in this era of crisis - especially perhaps for those of us who fall into the expat category and have at least one other real point of comparison... Is Athens expensive? Is it affordable? Relative to what? How does one measure or justify one's own opinion and personal experience...? Importantly, how much should a glass of wine really cost?

I may just have an answer!

I recently read a post on Facebook about the cost of living in various cities. Turns out there is a cool website that actually compares cost of living across a range of cities, big and small. And they really do compare everything, in a detailed and realistic way.

How much is an apartment 'in a nice area'? How much is laundry detergent? Movie tickets? A beer in an upscale bar? I suppose it depends where one buys one's laundry detergent, but you get the picture...

In my humble view, Athens is not an 'expensive' city - in comparative terms with other capital cities of similar size and population. In terms of local average earning, especially in recent years, the picture of course may be slightly different...

In any case, there is lots of interesting info on the site that can certainly add some colour to the usual coffee-talk on the woes and wonders of this great city...

What do you think? Check it out: www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/athens

Curry At The Port

After the snow (what?!) and cold temperatures of last week, it’s almost impossible to recall the sunny, balmy 18-degree days of last weekend. I had planned a fun-filled afternoon with a friend who promised to show me around Piraeus – a part of the city, I must admit, I do not frequent. Not for any particular reason, apart from not really knowing much more about Piraeus than the passenger port for trips to the islands…

We met at Piraeus station, and made our way on foot around the port area, on  a long walk around the ‘peninsula’ that is Piraeus proper. The seaside walk was beautiful, and we stopped along the way at the endless strip of taverans and cafés of Akti Themistokleous for a coffee and maybe even a tsipouro or two… The seaside views and beachside walk was wonderful – and totally doable on foot over a couple of hours. We made it as far around as Marina Zeas, but called it a day since we were by then starving…

We decided to go nuts and go for Indian food. My friend has been trying to get me to her ‘local Indian’ for ages – so we went. The place is called Kebab & Curry – and it lived up to its praise. It’s an unassuming space, simple, run by an Indian family. ‘Taki’ the owner had saved us a table, and my friend had phoned ahead to arrange a fixed-price feast. This was wonderful – no need to look at the menu, no need to deliberate, just eat and enjoy! The food here is great – authentic, spiced according to your preference, and evidently quite popular. There was even a delivery bike outside for lucky Piraeus locals.

All in all a nice afternoon in an under-rated part of the city. Next time we will walk the opposite way around and stop in Mikrolimano and the endless fish tavernas – a popular city highlight for locals and visitors alike!

Toronto Newspaper Tribute To Athens

Toronto Star’s Rick Steves has published a travel report entitled “Athens, the birthplace of Western civilization, clean up its act.” The journalist pays tribute to the Greek capital in an article that showcases the city’s beauty and cultural significance.

As Steves notes, the new driving restriction law and Athens’ “marvelous” subway system have decongested the city. As a result the air is now cleaner and air pollution has decreased significantly.

A city that used to be known for its noise and graffiti painted walls has now turned into a beautiful capital filled with parks and pedestrian streets with inviting cafés and benches to relax, noted the article. Meanwhile, Steves made a special note to Athens’ biggest draw — its archaeological sites.

“Even in today’s bustle, you can still feel the aura of the ancient Greeks, who reached their apex here nearly 2,500 years ago. With the mighty Acropolis crowning the old centre, you’re constantly reminded as you wander the streets of Athens that this is the birthplace of Western civilization, itself,” he wrote.

He takes a “virtual” stroll around some of the city’s most significant archaeological sites such as the Acropolis Museum, the ancient Agora, and the pedestrian street Dionysiou Areopagitou. He then presents the modern face of Athens, with many traditional taverns and restaurants where one can enjoy Greek delicacies.

The availability of wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs) makes the difference for many who travel abroad with special transportation needs. Wheelchair friendly vehicles in Greece are absolutely necessary, in many instances, offering any traveling family the freedom and independence they seek while away from home.

The recent WAV advocacy news in the United States calls attention to the importance of wheelchair friendly transport and services. WAVs are non-emergency vans that are easily accessible to those with physical disabilities. Several van models are typically equipped to handle up to two wheelchairs. These specially made vehicles are designed for those who cannot travel without leaving their wheelchair. WAVs can also be used by wheelchair users either as a passenger or a driver — without needing to move out of their wheelchair. The size, shape and design of various wheelchair friendly vehicles always depend on the original vehicle it was created from. Also, the size will vary on how it was converted and the company that converted it.

The best WAV services offer availability based on a client’s needs, either for an extended stay in Greece or simply for pick-up services during the day or night for transport between two destinations.   Other non-emergency vehicle services are called upon by those who might need to ensure safe, comfortable transport of patients that are temporarily using a wheelchair between health-related appointments, such as dialysis or an injury.

Delicious Pumpkin Soup

Pumpkin soup is a perfect warming dish to serve during autumn and winter. It cooks in no time, and it's a favorite for kids and adults alike. Add caramelized bacon and homemade croutons to take this recipe to a whole different tastiness level!

Serves: 4-6
Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cooks in: 30 minutes

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 2 onions, finely chopped
• 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped
• 70 g butter
• 800 g pumpkin, yellow, peeled
• 1 tablespoon fresh thyme
• 1 liter of water
• 1 chicken bouillon cube
• the juice of 1 orange

Cooking Method

Heat the olive oil in a deep pot over medium heat, and sauté the onions for 2 minutes, until slightly golden. Add the garlic and sauté for 1 more minute.

Add 20 g of the butter, the pumpkin cut into 3-4 cm cubes and the thyme.

Sauté for 2-3 more minutes and add the water with the chicken bouillon cube. You can also add a stock cube if you have some in your pantry.

Bring to a boil and simmer – with the lid on – for 15 to 30 minutes until the pumpkin is tender.

When the pumpkin pieces are tender, add the rest of the butter, the orange juice, and beat the soup with a blending rod until the mixture is homogenized and smooth.

If it is too watery, boil for a few more minutes. If it is too thick, add a little more hot water.

Tip: Serve the soup with heavy cream, fresh thyme, caramelized bacon, and homemade croutons.

Santorini Experience was completed with absolute success for a 3rd consecutive year, on the enchanting island of the Cyclades. The top sports tourism event in Greece, with a TV broadcast in 87 countries through the FOX Sports TV network, was completed with a record of participations in the running and swimming races with more than 1500 participations.

Popular abroad!
“Santorini Experience” is officially the event of the Hellenic Swimming Federation (having the auspices for the second year in a row) with the most popularity abroad, for amateur and professional athletes in Greece, while in running follows the events organized by the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) such as the Athens Marathon.
At the same time, foreign participations surpassed every precedent, as athletes from around 40 countries were "hosted" in Santorini. Indicatively, the attendance was extremely high from Australia, UK, Germany, France, USA, Canada, China, Russia, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and Hong Kong.

An international ambassador by the side of the established and promising Greek swimmers!
The Hungarian swimmer Attila Manyoki, the recognized athlete in open water swimming with several successes and a member of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF), took part for the first time in the event. The presence of swimmers was dynamic with top professional athletes such as the Greek open water champion Kelly Araouzou and members of the Greek national team, Antonis Fokaidis, Giorgos Arniakos and Dimitris Negris. In addition, for the first time in an open water swimming race, more than 10 Greek champions took part.

In Santorini, we enjoyed the new young Greek leading open water swimmers who follow the steps of Spyros Gianniotis (he swam in Santorini in 2015 and 2016 before his withdrawal) under the instructions of the federal coach Nikos Gemelos.

The technical director of the swimming race not only applied the new 1.1 mile open water swimming route (from Skaros to the old port of Fira) on Sunday morning, due to the difficult weather conditions, but also supervised its conduct so that everything would be done in accordance with the regulations of FINA and the Hellenic Swimming Federation. Swimmers started in groups and not all together, following all safety rules.
Of course, there were 50 specialized escorts in the water who contributed, with the assistance of Lifeguard Patrol, which also had several lifeguard boats, the people from Santorini who helped with their own boats, the Voluntary Lifeguards of Santorini, Atlantis Dive Center and above all Santorini Boatmen Union that transferred and protected the organization of the open water swimming.

The traditional sweet of Santorini, melitinia (offered by Manos Pastry Shop) as well as seasonal fruits were offered to the swimmers after the end of their race.

Best innovative sports tourism event!
For the first time in a sports event in Greece, Samsung as the official technology partner was present with its innovative services through the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, combined with the Gear 360 camera and Gear VR, enrich the experience of those attending and watching the event with unique content at 360 degrees.

The award-winning event did not stop its innovation here. The GoPro 6 action camera was first used in Greece, with its simultaneous arrival at a world premiere. The GoPro HERO6 Black, with its breathtaking analysis and waterproof design, has especially helped in having the best and most impressive shots in the swimming and running activities.

A difficult and demanding route!
Hundreds of athletes were present in the running routes. The runners participated in the 5km “Aristides Alafouzos”, 10 km and 15 km running routes, having as a “background” the unique images of the volcano overlooking the Caldera and passing through the settlements of Imerovigli, Firostefani and Oia. The 5km route took this year's name “Aristides Alafouzos” in memory of the great benefactor of the island. Indeed, the nephew of the late Alafouzos, Mr. Giannis Haidemenos, said after the starting signal he gave together with the Mayor of Santorini, Nikos Zorzos, on the 5km route: “I am very pleased because the effort made by Aristides Alafouzos is justified, being a sponsor in the whole island of Santorini all these years. It is a great honor for us and very important that this race takes place in his memory”.

Sports for all!
Excitement was spread to the young children at the 1km running race held on Friday, October 6th, with the support of Vikos, at Panthiraikos Stadium in Fira, with the presence of the Olympic and World Champion at 400m. with hurdles Periklis Iakovakis (who ran also the 5km) and Greek-American ultramarathon Dean Karnazes, who participated in the 5km and 15 km running races, while he signed his last book at Alafouzos Sport store (sponsor of the event) in Fira. TaeKwonDo lessons were conducted to advanced and amateur athletes by the twice silver Olympic medalist Alexandros Nikolaidis, while the warm-up of the athletes in running was undertaken by the pilates instructor Mandy Perskaki.

Easy access and promotion!
Participating athletes traveled to “Santorini Experience”, with the official airline partner of the event, Ryanair that offered the possibility of connecting Athens with Santorini with direct flights from 13 cities abroad. The leading Greek shipping company Blue Star Ferries, as a sponsor of the event, facilitated the ferry transfer by offering a 50% discount on the ferry tickets and vehicles of the participants, assisting the travel of Greek and foreign athletes.

The foreign participants and visitors approached the event mostly in groups this year, showing the results of the promotion which was made through the tourism expo in Sweden, the campaign implemented in Germany targeted at the first autumn school holidays and the targeted communication strategy in China, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and America was effective.

Local Government Co-operation and Private Initiative
All these wouldn’t have been accomplished without the full cooperation of the Municipality of Santorini, DAPPOS and Active Media Group, as well as the supporters of the event.

For the third consecutive year, ambassadors and organizers moved with the safety and efficient engines of the cars of Ford Motor Hellas, the official supporter of “Santorini Experience”. Throughout the three-day event organizers and athletes drove with the excellent fuel quality of EKO! At the same time, “Vikos” offered to the athletes who took part the opportunity to quench their thirst with the Natural Mineral Water “Vikos”. Official supporters also included Avance, Santorini Hoteliers Association, Aqua Vista Hotels, Santo Maris Oia Luxury Suites & Spa (that welcomed the guests on Friday and organized the Sunset Cocktail under the music of the great Cretan lyre player, songwriter and composer Psarantonis) and Athina Luxury Suites.

The hospitality sponsors that supported the event from Santorini were: Santorini Hoteliers Association, Meltemi Hotels & Resorts, Aqua Vista Hotels, Athina Luxury Suites, Santo Maris Oia Luxury Suites & Spa, Aegean Plaza Hotel, Andronis Concept, Vedema A Luxury Collection Resort Santorini, Canaves Oia, West East Suites, Desiterra Luxury Suites & Villas, 270 Oia's View, Central Fira Hotel, Memories Hotel, Loizos Stylish Residencies, Fanouris Condo, Monolithia Hotel, Esperas Santorini, Sienna Residencies, Hotel Rivari Santorini, White Pearl Villas, Caldera Collection.

In Athens, Wyndham Grand Athens assisted the event as an official supporter and hospitality sponsor.

The event was assisted by Sunset Oia Sailing Cruises, Alios Ilios, Assyrtico Wine Restaurant Café, Lifeguard Patrol, Voluntary Lifeguards of Santorini and Atlantis Dive Center.

“Santorini Experience” took place under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization and the Hellenic Swimming Federation with the co-organization of the Municipality of Santorini, DAPPOS and Active Media Group.
