Greek National Opera: Byron In Greece

As part of the tribute to the 2021 bicentennial of the Greek Revolution.

Approaching the Greek adventures of Lord Byron by means of the tradition of the Greek folk shadow play known as “Karagiozis” is not an arbitrary choice, as might be imagined, given that the multifarious Lord is known to have been among the spectators of a performance of the early, Turkish version of the play in an Epirus coffee-shop in 1809!

In this new commission of the GNO Alternative Stage, the important shadow puppeteer Athos Danellis uses his cardboard figures to tell the story of Byron’s two visits to Greece (first as part of his youthful Grand Tour and then in the service of the Greek War of Independence) within the telescoped, dreamlike space-time of the “berdes” (the traditional backlit cloth that acts as screen-stage for the shadow play).

The gradual conversion of Lord Byron from a “superstar” Romantic tourist-poet to a conscious philhellene, a critic of Greek factionalism and benefactor of the Revolution, eventually gaining the status of a national hero in the Greek popular imaginary, is highlighted through his imaginative absorption by the archetypal world of Karagiozis and enriched by deft references to historical figures such as John Cam Hobhouse, Ali Pasha and Tereza Makri – better known as “Maid of Athens” from Byron’s poem of the same title that paid tribute to the twelve-year-old girl with whom the poet fell passionately in love while lodging in her mother’s house in 1810.

FokiaNou Art Space is pleased to present a two-person exhibition with Ioanna Terlidou and Piyi Wong, artists who work in vastly different media but with a common delicate, light-weight approach, evoking ephemerality. Terlidou’s work in fabric, embroidery, crochet and weaving, injects transparency and a play of light, which reveals different aspects of the fabric at different moments; fleeting glimpses of human figures recall shadow theater. Likewise, Wong’s photographic botany portraiture has a direct and immediate quality in capturing fragments of time, expressing the transitory, momentary concept of ephemerality, inspired by Lao Zi’s philosophical concept of Ziran.

Ioanna Terlidou, originally from Thessaloniki, studied tapestry and drawing at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, on a scholarship from EOMMEX (Hellenic Organization of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises and Handicraft). Upon returning to Greece, she set up her studio in Pilion, where she initially worked with a traditional (seated) floor loom. She later moved to a vertical loom, which helped her develop a more personal artistic style. Terlidou has shown her work at E-Mi Gallery, Volos; Gallery 7, Athens; the Folkloric Museum of Larissa and the Archaelogical Museum, Volos, among others. ioannaterlido@yahoo.gr

Piyi Wong is a multidisciplinary artist/designer from a Chinese/Malaysian background. She earned her degree in Graphics and Media and graduated with Honours from the London College of Printing, part of the collegiate University of the Arts London. She has resided and worked in Greece for the last ten years, attending for 3 years the Athens School of Fine Arts as a visiting artist in the Graphics Lab (letterpress and book making) and the Photography Lab. She also worked as art director at the award winning Leo Burnet Kuala Lumpur and collaborated with the artist/photographer Justin Brice Guariglia. http://www.poieinpiyi.com

Phoenix Athens proudly presents the group exhibition Wunderkammer : A Cabinet of Curiosities with works by Dimitri Yin, Paperman, Karl Heinz Jeron, Melina Fakitsa, Yiorgos Kaltsidis, Stefan Riebel and Anna Theodorakis.

The Wunderkammer or cabinet of curiosities, is the name given to relics and objects of natural history that were presented in museums and cultural spaces in the sixteenth century. The exhibition questions the notion of the exotic as well as the dialectic between memory and normative canons in contemporary art by exploring the dialogues and interrelationships between narratives of artists from different backgrounds and the manner in which they employ “craft” as a pathway towards [free] individual expression.

The spectacle of the inane, the sensation of the obvious or the hidden gem, the diamond in the rough, l’idée “insolite” as the French say ? There is of course fool’s gold, the epiphanic revelation, the freakish paroxysm, jubilant enchantment and hidden secrets revealed.

More specifically, the exhibition addresses healing and rebuilding broken and rebuilding through symbols and histories. In a time when the art world is replete with assemblages, appropriation and desperation, the exhibition is an effort to rekindle our fascination with the curious and the curiouser, redefining our notion of mysticism, memory and questioning into the realm of more universal memories and potentially concrete outcomes.

Gallery days & hours: Monday to Friday 12 - 6 pm - Saturday and Sunday by appointment

Athens Photo World 2021

From the 21st of May and until the end of summer, the Athens Photo World embraces different neighbourhoods and iconic places of Athens with special exhibitons and events!

Athens Photo World makes a dynamic comeback from the 21st of May with a series of exhibitions and events following the launching of 2019. With photojournalism as its central point, the APW aims to highlight the work of contemporary photojournalists of Greek and international photojournalism. In an age of limitations and redefinitions of the global daily life, the image has been –more emphatically than ever in modern history– the only real channel of information and communication. Photojournalists around the world are among the few professionals who have worked tirelessly, facing indefinable risks, revealing aspects of a new and unexpected reality.

With Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) as its Lead Donor, this year’s Athens Photo World presents to the public older and contemporary works from the international news, focusing a part of its presentations on sports as this year is rich in sporting events. Through the exhibitions, the discussions with the professionals of the field and the two awards for Greek and foreign photojournalists, the dialogue between the audience and creators will be revived.

Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival

The Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival Is Back!
Hybrid Edition

The festival that marks the start of the summer concert season in Athens, the festival that started out with just a few ardent jazz fans under the stage and reached high levels by welcoming more than 46,000 visitors annually, the most beloved festival of Athenians, the one and only Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival is back!

After one year of absence and with 2021 still having a few surprises in store for us, Technopolis City of Athens invites us to a new hybrid 3-day version of the oldest music event of the city, from 28 to 30 May 2021.

Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival returns in a renewed, far more digital format with 16 participations from Greece and abroad, top world-famous ensembles, the best representatives of the Greek jazz scene, crossover music inspirations and more... to be announced soon.

In the meantime, the ATJF team has been working round the clock to make the festival happen regardless of the circumstances, the health measures and restrictions that may apply at the end of next month. Since the only thing that is certain, though, is that this year’s event will be way different from the previous ones, ATJF’s brand identity acts a small reminder of what a “real” festival is like, a festival with posters, merch and other “real” things, a festival as we all know it and want it to be! #StayTuned #JazzBeThere #ATJF2021

Athens Epidaurus Festival 2021: Live!

In the past, adding the word 'live' next to the title of the Athens Epidaurus Festival would have been considered an overstatement, maybe even a mistype. Of course the biggest cultural festival in Greece, and one of the oldest in Europe, would be live! What else could it possibly be? Well, we all know what happened in 2020.

Rolling forward to the announcement of this year’s program for the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the people behind AEF have now learned all the tricks on how to carefully balance the obstacles of social distancing with the requirements of a real life event - and with the anticipation and bottled creativity of a culturally-barren year, the Athens Epidaurus Festival has announced its 5-month-long, 80-show-strong live program!

The 2021 summer season will be focused mainly on works by Greek artists, leaving the autumn season to shoot for the safer actualization of international events. Due to the ongoing pandemic, all performance dates are subject to change so do make sure to regularly check with the festival’s schedule.
