The Central Archaeological Council of Greece (KAS) has recently approved a request by BBC to film part of a serialised adaptation of a John le Carre novel at the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. The request had previously been denied.

Following pressure by the Greek government, which had also criticised the decision by the country’s archaeological council not to allow the BBC to film, KAS will allow filming to begin on April 12th, 2018.

Filming at Greek archaeological sites, whether for commercial productions or news reporting, requires a permit from archaeologists that is sometimes near impossible and very costly to obtain.

Great Netflix Shows To Watch With Your Kids

With the daily number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Greece being steadily high, many children are stuck at home. This consequently means that they are stuck with their tablets and mobile phones all day long. So, why not make the most out of this situation? Binge-watching Netflix is fast becoming a beloved activity for many kids, but instead of watching silly shows, why not watch something educational?

Here are some of our favorite Netflix shows to watch with your kids, spend some quality time together, and engage them in meaningful conversations.

Julie & The Phantoms

This is the story of Julie, whose mother's death led her to discover her passion for music. When she meets three ghost boys, who encourage her to chase her dreams, they all form a band together. Alexa & Katie

The story follows Alexa, a girl who fights cancer, while at the same time is trying to adapt to high school life with the help of her friend Katie. Although the plot is sad, the series itself is neither sad nor scary but focuses on the power of friendship and hope that always dies last.

Ashley Garcia: Genius in Love

This comedy series proves that no job should be gender-stereotyped, that men aren't essentially better at science, that women should have equal rights at work, and that they can become prominent members of the scientific community. The series follows Ashley Garcia, a charismatic child, the only 15-year-old girl in the world who is a rocket scientist and robotics engineer, who moves to her uncle's house in America to work for NASA. A series that can inspire any child who watches it to pursue their dreams, whatever they are.

2021 has been a remarkable year for the startup ecosystem in Greece as the country climbed six places to 48th in the world according to StartupBlink’s “Startup Blink Global Ecosystem Report for 2022”. At the same time, Greek startups raised over €500M in 2021 -almost triple compared to last year’s disclosed investments- while the country entered for the first time the “unicorn” club. Unicorn companies are those that reach a valuation of $1 billion without being listed on the stock market and two Greek companies have recently reached this status.

StartupBlink Global Startup Ecosystem Map

According to the StartupBlink world index, Greece ranked number 48 globally climbing 6 places since last year with an upward trend that is expected to be recorded in the next report. Greece’s rise is mainly due to the rising startup ecosystem of Athens, as the Greek capital is high on the list of the top 100 ecosystems in the field of recreation, in 51st place. Athens is the top-ranked Greek city in an index of 1,000 cities ranking at 132. Greece also ranks at number 18 for startups in Western Europe and is an ideal place to locate Social & Leisure, Transportation, and Foodtech startups.

According to the Startup Blink report, Greece remains resilient, despite the financial crisis of 2008 and the pandemic of 2020. Greece is an EU country located at the intersection of Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa having at the same time the advantage of a highly-skilled English-speaking workforce. In 2021 startup funding was increased and important exits were registered including two unicorn companies. This has attracted worldwide attention to the Greek startup ecosystem and its technological capabilities as the country has the potential to become a regional technology hub.

Traveling in Greece doesn’t always look like long summer holidays or slow island hopping. For many people today, especially younger travelers, it’s about short, intentional trips: a few days in a city, a long weekend on an island, or a quick escape squeezed between work and everyday life.

And yet, some of the strongest travel memories come from these shorter journeys.

The key isn’t how much time you have, but how you use it. Greece works particularly well for this kind of travel. Distances are manageable, destinations are distinct, and even a few days can feel meaningful if you approach them with the right mindset.

That’s also why more travelers are thinking differently about how they document their trips. Instead of constantly taking photos themselves, many now plan one small moment to capture things properly. Platforms like Picturo make this simple by connecting travelers with local photographers ahead of time, so memories are captured without interrupting the experience.

Whether you’re traveling solo or as a couple, Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos are three destinations that prove short trips can still leave a lasting impression.

Athens: Short Stays, Deep Layers

Athens is ideal for short trips because it offers so much without feeling overwhelming. In just a few days, you can experience history, food, nightlife, and everyday city life, often within walking distance.

For solo travelers, Athens feels open and energetic. It’s easy to wander without a plan, sit in a café longer than expected, or explore neighborhoods where daily life unfolds naturally. You don’t need to see everything for the city to leave a mark.

For couples, Athens becomes a shared rhythm. Morning walks through quiet streets, rooftop views in the evening, spontaneous dinners that stretch late. The city invites conversation and movement rather than strict schedules.

Athens is also a place where photography blends naturally into the experience. A walk through the city with an Athens Photographer doesn’t feel like a formal session; it feels like exploring with someone who knows when the light is right and where the city slows down.

Short stays here work best when you stop trying to “do Athens” and instead let it happen around you.

Santorini: Letting Simplicity Do the Work

Santorini is often visited briefly, and that’s actually part of its appeal. The island is all about atmosphere.

For couples, Santorini is naturally intimate, but the most meaningful moments often happen away from the crowds. Early mornings, quiet walks, and unplanned pauses are where the island shows its softer side.

Solo travelers experience Santorini differently. Without distractions, the island feels calm and reflective. Sitting with a view, watching the light change, or walking through villages before they fill up can feel surprisingly grounding, even on a short stay.

Because the landscape is so visually strong, Santorini doesn’t require much effort to be memorable. A simple Santorini photoshoot, timed well and kept relaxed, can capture the feeling of the island without turning the visit into a performance.

Here, doing less often leads to remembering more.

Mykonos: Energy in Small Doses

Mykonos is often associated with big nights and fast-paced travel, but it’s also well suited to short trips when approached with balance.

For solo travelers, Mykonos can feel liberating. Early mornings are quiet and almost minimal, while afternoons and evenings bring movement and social energy. Even a few days are enough to experience both sides of the island.

For couples, Mykonos works best when you don’t overplan. A relaxed morning, a beach stop, a spontaneous evening the island rewards flexibility. You don’t need a long stay to feel its personality.

Photography in Mykonos often mirrors this contrast. A walk with a Mykonos Photographer feels less like posing and more like moving through the island’s rhythm calm at first, expressive later, always changing.

Short trips here feel full, not rushed.

Why Short Trips Stay With Us

Short trips move fast. That’s exactly why they benefit from intention.

When you know you only have a few days, you pay closer attention. You notice light, conversations, small details. You’re less focused on “seeing everything” and more on experiencing what’s in front of you.

Capturing one part of that experience thoughtfully — a walk, a morning, a shared moment — can anchor the entire trip in memory. It’s not about creating perfect images, but about holding onto how it felt to be there.

This approach resonates with solo travelers who want to remember how they moved through a place, and with couples who want something tangible from time spent together.

Service To Be Proud Of

We thank our friend Andrea for sending us her experience at a hotel in Athens.

It was my first time in Greece and after visiting Mykonos and Santorini, a must they tell me when you come to this country, we decided to stay in Athens to see the city and visit friends. On the last day we checked out of the hotel and were having lunch (our flight was thankfully not for a few hours) when I realized that I had forgotten all my jewelry in the hotel room safe! I quickly called the hotel and told them the situation. They agreed to leave the room as it was and didn’t allow anyone in until I arrived and had taken my belongings. I am so thankful and impressed with how professional they were. I’ll be coming back to the Life Gallery on my next visit to Athens. Thank you XpatAthens for letting me tell my story.

Jack

In this weekly space, keep up with ‘Jack’ as he navigates daily life in Athens… Anecdotes, stories, hits & misses, the good, the bad and, well, the rest…

With great luck we found ourselves somewhere in picturesque Mikrolimano. Right by the water with tables and comfortable maritime armchairs almost touching the sea, Delfino offers a unique opportunity for all who search for good-tasting and high-quality food. The atmosphere is exclusive and the location with its strong marine elements competes favourably with the famous background of "Delfino" with the picturesque and distinctly beautiful Portofinoon the Italian Riviera. With collector's furniture and paintings decorating the dining room and an exceptionally aesthetic bar where you can enjoy classic cocktails with soft music; we offer you a totally pleasurable experience.

Delfino Restaurant is located in the town of Piraeus, south-east of Athens. Though the drive here may be a tad inconvenient, the seafood delicacies, other meat dishes, pastas and wines make up for it. Located close to the sea, it accommodates up to 70 people in the outdoor seating area, so you can enjoy the view. An additional 70 visitors can be seated inside. The interiors are beautifully decorated while the facade is inspired by a yacht's design. Come by and you're likely to make more trips outside the city for a bite.

With fresh Greek fish, unique seafood flavours from our homeland as well as other Mediterranean countries and a variety of fresh pastas in unique recipes from neighbouring Italy, we cover a wide variety of cullinary delights.

When it comes to service, we are always polite, welcoming and eager to assist in your selection, offering you an exceptional dinner.

What Fruit, Veggies & Herbs Are In Season Now?

In today's world of refrigeration and hothouse-grown produce, the distinction among seasonal produce is often lost. However, each fruit, vegetable, and herb does have a season when it is ripe and ready to eat without the help of anyone except Mother Nature - better from both a nutritional and taste perspective. In Greece, these are the seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs we see in our farmer's markets.

Autumn Harvest

Seasonal Vegetables

You'll still find eggplant, okra, root onions, potatoes, purslane, and tomatoes, while zucchini are at their ripest in September in early autumn in Greece.

The situation perks up again in October when cucumbers begin ripening as do dill, endive, fennel leaves, fennel roots, fresh and dried beans, root onions, peppers, radishes, romaine, and rutabagas.

Seasonal Fruits

Some fruits are at their best at this time of year, including apples, grapes, kiwi, persimmons, green olives, quince, and pomegranates. Figs, grapes, melons, and plums are also still in season. As far as nuts are concerned, walnuts and pistachios from Aegina are also good in the autumn months.
