Grand Opening - Athenians Rugby Club

New Sports Club Calling on Athenians to Come and Try Rugby

The newly formed Athenians Sports Club will hold a ‘grand opening’ on Saturday 28th of April at Aiolos Glyfadas FC in Vari.

Co-founders Lina Norman and Vasilis Katsakos are encouraging people of all ages to attend and try their hand at rugby and enjoy the other exciting activities planned for the launch.

Both Norman and Katsakos are experienced rugby players and coaches who have a passion for the game and would love to see more Athens residents enjoying the sport as much as they do.
“We decided to start ‘Athenians’ because we want to give more children the chance to play rugby,” said Norman who played in the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup for Sweden.

“Rugby has some great values connected to the sport. Respect for others, respect for rules and laws, solidarity with your teammates, discipline and passion. I believe that children who learn to understand and treasure these values early on will benefit in all their social, family and work relationships.’’

Rugby has given Vasilis (Billy) Katsakos the opportunity to play at the elite level in Spain and France as well as Greece and he is now ready to help the next generation reach their goals. “Academies for all kinds of sports have been my biggest dream since I was a student at university. Now I feel ready to start something and share my knowledge with the best people there are, kids! “Rugby is a lot like life.

Sometimes you have to compete with someone taller, faster or heavier than you. The magic thing is that you have to win this “fight” for you and your teammates with the attributes and skills that you have and always respecting the rules of the game and the laws of life. “Rugby is a sport that everybody can join and play an important role on the field whether you are big, small, tall or short.”

Currently there are eleven active rugby union clubs in Greece with approximately three hundred players. There are seven women’s teams. The grand opening will include tag rugby games for the kids, rugby activities for all ages, blue building blocks for the youngest kids, barbecue and drinks for sale and a DJ. There will be the chance to win a family holiday to Italy courtesy of Nova Travel.

If you are undecided whether you should attend, Lina Norman has a simple message for you. “Come! We promise you it will be fun. We have so many activities going it’s gonna be like a rugby fun fair! For the youngest and the oldest and those in between, there will be things to do for everyone.

It doesn’t matter if it’s the first time you see a rugby ball or if you have played in a world cup, rugby is for everyone.” DETAILS: Athenians Sports Club grand opening. Saturday 28 April at 17:00. Venue: Aiolos Glyfadas FC Papandreou Andrea 2, Vari Greece.
The unique heritage with which Athens has been blessed is in stark contrast to the often chaoticdaily realities. In everything we do, build or aspireto, western values are intermingled with longembedded character traits. So which way forward for the city we love?

Vassilis Sgoutas is a practicing architect with works in Greece and abroad. Former President of the International Union of Architects(UIA). Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)

A reception will follow the lecture.

FokiaNou Art Space is pleased to present a collaborative art exhibition between two artists, Rea Stavropoulos and Iliana Theodoropoulou.

Rea Stavropoulos is an “Athenian Florentine Londoner” in an age when the notion of nations, boundaries and allegiances shifts and becomes increasingly uncertain. The installation “Shifting Spaces” and related events is a dialogue with the city of her birth. Her “Secret Gardens” project  has travelled across Europe since 2001, developing with each new space. It relates to the search for a personal space in the heart of a city and a place in the world, and to spatial relationships, constantly shifting physically, psychologically and metaphorically. The installation will be like the artist’s studio, a process of shifting spaces challenging us to “re-envision” the world, looking within and without.

Iliana Theodoropoulou‘s work, which began in 2005, also takes part in the dialogue, exploring spatial phenomena such as surfaces, rocks, walls and especially sidewalks or pavements, while observing the linear elements they create. This linearity is felt both as experience and inspiration, resulting in small abstract works that are grouped together and set in a grid. A second, more recent series of folded works which began in 2017 refer to autobiographical routes within Athens and focus more on decay, memory and absence. These pieces open and unfold, revealing an ephemeral moment that is the product of recording and editing.

Rea Stavropoulos is a British artist of Greek origin who works internationally. Currently based in London and Brighton, she continues to collaborate with arts organisations in Florence where she had a studio for 16 years. She studied Art in London (St Martin’s School of Art), Paris (Beaux Arts) and Florence and has exhibited her paintings, artists books and three dimensional works in private and public spaces all over Europe and in  Brazil since 1976. Her practise involves collaborative projects, installations, teaching, lecturing, writing, curating, advocacy and campaigning for women artists. Her work is in private and public collections all over the world. www.reastavropoulos.com

Iliana Theodoropoulou is a visual artist from Athens, Greece. She has studied Surveying Engineering in Athens and Photogrammetry in London. She spent several years doing research and working in Berlin. Since her return to Greece, she has been exclusively working as a visual artist. Her main field is painting, where her work inhabits the border between abstraction and landscape painting, but she also explores the possibilities of photography and film. She has had two solo exhibitions and participated in several group shows. www.ilianatheodoropoulou.com
