The Museum Without A Home - An Exhibition Of Hospitality
Greece is a country renowned for its contribution to philosophy, democracy and civilization in general. Everyday people across Greece become examples of kindness, humanity and solidarity, offering items to people who have nothing.
Within this framework, Amnesty International in Greece and Oxfam have created The Museum Without A Home wanting to thank Greeks for offering pieces of their lives, both metaphorically and literally, to this cause.
The Museum Without A Home is quite different from the ordinary, since it neither has a specific location nor opening hours, while the objects it displays are not works of art but things that the Greeks offered to people who needed protection and support and that played an important role in their everyday lives.
Look around for the exhibits throughout the city. You’ll find them at particular Public Transport modes (tube, trams and over ground coaches) as well as at the Acropolis Museum, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of School Life and Education and the Frissiras Museum. Visit them and listen to their stories; maybe you can identify with one of those!

Greece Remains The Leading Ship-Owning Country
Greek shipowners have retained their role as top players in world shipping according to a special review recently published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Despite the challenges faced by the Hellenic ship owning community, Greece has continued to strengthen its position as the largest ship owning nation in recent years.
Addressing an event marking the 100th anniversary of the Union of Greek Shipowners in Athens this November 2016, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, noted that while Greece’s population is only 0.15 per cent of the world population, Greeks control 25 per cent of the world’s total merchant fleet. These numbers are of huge significance not only for the Greek but for the European economy as well, in terms of competitiveness.
Traditionally, shipping gives an important boost to the Greek economy, with opportunities to generate income and employmentas well as promote foreign trade. One prominent trend giving hope and optimism for the future is the high quality of maritime studies in Greece, in combination with the potential of Greek shipping and the high standard of Greek shipping personnell.

Discover Greek Culture In Athens
Blogger Elena Sergeeva from Passion For Greece feels that once in a while we should become tourists in our own city and spend a day exploring the hidden gems, interacting with others who definitely know something that you don’t and opening your eyes to new surroundings and learn. Elena recently spent the day in Athens with Discover Greek Culture learning all about Athens’ Art and Culture. Here, she describes her experience!
Our meeting point was the Syntagma Square which is the main square of Athens and the one that received its name from the Constitution that the first King of Greece Otto was obliged to grant. Here you will find the Greek Parliament building which initially served as a palace of Kings Otto and George I. From here we headed down to the Ermou street which is the central shopping street of Athens and is one of the first three streets that were designed in modern Athens.
The name Ermou or otherwise known as Hermes in English was named after the ancient Greek God Hermes who was the God of trade; therefore it is quite common that many of the commercial streets in Greece carry the name of Ermou. The street was very busy as all the Athenians were rushing to buy Christmas presents just before the holidays.
Our next stop was at the Church of Panaghia Kapnikarea which is found right in the heart of the Ermou Street, and impressive monument dated to the Middle-Byzantine period. In 1834, the building was in danger of being demolished as the newly-established Modern Greek State decided on the new layout for the Greek capital with the plans of having the Ermou Street extend straight forward and exactly aligned with the Palace’s central entrance, thankfully the destruction was avoided thanks to the father of King Otto. What is unique about this church is that it stands one level below the main street of Ermou and the dome is held by four uniquely decorated columns.

The Smile Of The Child Launches Campaign To Help Refugee Children On Lesvos
In an effort to help refugee children who are currently stuck living in migrant reception centers in Greece, the non-profit, The Smile of the Child, has been overwhelmed trying to help these children who are most vulnerable.
The Smile of the Child’s plight in helping refugee children is not in a solitary cause as Canada’s former Ambassador to Greece, Robert Peck visited the Greek island of Lesvos last summer and after seeing the refugee hotspot firsthand. Now, The House of Canada and the Americas (HOCATA) will become part of The Smile of the Child network of homes in Greece, helping refugee children on the island of Lesvos.
HOCATA will be located in a former mansion donated to the NGO on the outskirts of the capital of the Greek island of Lesvos, Mytilini. Once renovated, The Smile of the Child expects to house upwards of 25 children in a safe, secure and loving environment.
HOCATA will target children vulnerable to exploitation, especially unaccompanied refugee minors, who are living behind barbed wire or in make shift shelters on the island. These children are innocent victims of the refugee crisis who find themselves in very dire circumstances, often lacking adequate shelter, food and health care.
