Archaeologists have discovered an old lost city in Greece dating back 2,500 years!

Researchers from the University of Gothenburg and the University of Bournemouth have begun exploring the ruins at a village called Vlochos, around 300km (190 miles) north of Athens.

The team, which also includes researchers from the Ephorate of Antiquities of Karditsa, found the remains of towers, walls and city gates on the summit and slopes of the hill.

The leader of the team, Robin Ronnlund, said the city appears to have flourished from the fourth to the third century BC before it was abandoned — possibly because of the Roman conquest of the area.

More specifically, the 5 km running and dynamic walking, a 10 km route for long-distance runners and 15 km race for those who love stamina, technique and strength. All routes start at the desalination plant in Oia, with parts of trail track, and again end in Oia.

This year, for the first time there will be time recording for all runners and swimmers. 

Greek world champion of open water swimming, Kelly Araouzou, who will be attending, pointed out, “It is with great pleasure that I will be swimming in the beautiful waters of Santorini for the 3rd consecutive year. Santorini Experience is, to me, a unique experience as besides the athletic part that concerns swimming, the feeling of competing in one of the most famous places in the world is incredible! I strongly advise everyone to come and live this unique experience, on an island which is a tourist destination for the entire world all year long!”

Let it be noted that “Santorini Experience” was awarded in this year’s Ermis Awards with the Golden Award for the best sports event production for the previous year!

This summer the design platform It's all, oh so souvenir to me! and the cultural space T.A.F / The Art Foundation are joining in a multi-faceted project that finds a roof at Normanou street in Monastiraki. The new partnership begins with Oh!@TAF, the shop that was created on the premises of T.A.F to host the exciting collection of Greek design by It's all, oh so souvenir to me!

Just this month, T.A.F and oh so souvenir to me! had their first launch party that was an exhibition held for the fifth consecutive year. They presented 50 new proposals, enriching the already existing collection of It's all, oh so souvenir to me! which counts over 80 collaborations and hundreds of souvenir objects.

The idea behind ​​It's all, oh so souvenir to me! was born in the summer of 2013. Since then, four major exhibitions have been organized - Athens (July 2013, June 2014), Nisyros (September 2014), Benaki Museum (March 2015) and Thessaloniki (June 2016) - which gathered the proposals of more than 80 Greek designers on the redefinition and redesign of an extremely controversial object, the souvenir. What does it mean, what is proposed, how it is manufactured, how can it differ from what is offered by the tourist market?

What has emerged is a line of articles with Greece as a reference, that have a variety of functional qualities. The collection draws on the souvenir taking inspiration from different social, political and cultural themes, while displaying modern Greek identity by escaping the trivial patterns of the category, combining usability and innovation, inventiveness and humour.

On the design platform the creators come from the whole range of design. Architects, product designers, fashion and accessories designers, photographers, visual artists, ceramists, graphic designers, are constantly enriching it with the addition of new objects and new collaborations, always focusing on supporting and promoting Greek creation and creativity.

This summer, the Greek souvenir sails from Monastiraki to travel all over the world.

Set in Gazi, the brightly lit Christmas Factory looks like a real wonderland right in the middle of the city center and promises to get both young and old into the magical spirit of Christmas!

First stop, the small train that takes visitors around the village. Even though the village is set up in an industrial space - dating back to 1857, Gazi was the first coal gas factory in Greece - the result is actually very beautiful and festive. The cobbled alleys are lined with market stalls, selling everything from candy and accessories to toys and magic props!

 

Next stop, the Carousel. This old-fashioned ride it's sure to make you smile! If you want to enjoy some absolutely stunning views of the city the giant Ferris Wheel is a must-see attraction. You will also have fun in the bumper cars, the tube slide, and the mini roller coaster. There is also an ice skating rink, an indoor play area with bouncy toys, and a bunch of other funfair rides.

 

One of the main reasons to visit the village is for your little ones to write and post a letter to Santa and, of course, meet him in person. All you have to do is buy a Christmas postage stamp, write the letter, and post it in one of the red post boxes outside Santa’s headquarters. Santa's impressive headquarters feature a big fireplace, a beautiful tree, and bags filled with gifts scattered all over the room. You'll find him sitting in his chair, often surrounded by his loyal workers, the elves!

 

The Christmas Village in Gazi will run until January 6, 2022, from 10:00 to 22:00 and tickets cost 6 euros each or 20 euros for a family of 4.

Who Was Yιannis Moralis?

Ηe was born in the town of Arta in 1916, but lived in Preveza from 1922-1927, due to the fact that his father served as Principal at High School of Preveza. He moved to Athens with his parents in 1927. From the age of 15, he studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, from where he graduated in 1936. The following year he won a scholarship from the Athens Academy and left for Rome.

Moralis would stay in Italy until November 1937 and then moved to Paris where he studied at École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. At the same time, he registered in École des Arts et Metiers, to master mosaic. With the declaration of World War II, however, he returned to Greece hurriedly.

In 1940 he exhibited a series of engravings with the group “Free Artists” in Piraeus. In the same year, he assigned to the army and served his term while participating in the last pre-war Pan-Hellenic Exhibition in Zappeion, where he also received the bronze medal.

In 1954, he began his collaboration with the Theater of Art of Karolos Koun, and later on, he also collaborated with the National Theater. In 1958, together with Yiannis Tsarouchis and sculptor Antonis Soutsos, he represented Greece at the Venice Biennale.

An archaeologist published a photo of several helmets kept in the storeroom of the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.

Archaeologist Ticia Verver piqued the interest of fellow archaeologists when she took a photo, which showed rows of well-preserved helmets dating back to antiquity.

According to Verver, warriors who returned victorious from the battlefields showed their gratitude to Zeus by offering him their weapons. Olympia, due to the existence of the temple of Olympian Zeus, proved to be an important place for collecting weapons. The result is that a large number of helmets, shields, and spears can be found there.

The archaeologist also pointed out why visiting Olympia is so important. Individuals, as well as city-states, made offerings to Zeus, both money and statues (among them the famous Nike of Paionios from 421 BC), bronze tripods, shields, helmets, and weapons. Olympia is still a living Museum of Greek art and culture.
