Photographs Of Joan Leigh Fermor: Artist & Lover - Benaki Museum
Joan and Paddy Leigh Fermor were united in a pact of liberty – sharing their lives, mostly in Greece, as lovers and friends. As photographer and writer, they were also artists of equal stature.
Joan was a restless rebel when she took brilliant images of the London Blitz as a symbol of all that she would be leaving behind. She met Paddy in Cairo in 1944 and soon he was following her to Athens. They travelled all over Greece before settling in the Peloponnese – in the beautiful house they built at Kardamyli and bequeathed to the Benaki Museum.
Between the 1940s and 1960s Joan took thousands of photographs of people and places as she travelled with Paddy round Greece. A few appeared in his books Mani and Roumeli; most remained unseen on her death in 2003. Her archive is held at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh.
In a new book and exhibition, Ian Collins and Olivia Stewart pay tribute to an elusive figure whose art is a revelation.

Stand Up Comedy Special | Angelo Tsarouchas & George Hatzipavlou
It’s a comedy superpower summit!
Stand-up comedy superstar Angelo Tsarouchas is teaming up with one of the most prolific Greek comedians, Giorgos Xatzipavlou for a Greek Tour entitled “Stand Up Comedy Special”.
A once-in-a-lifetime comedy experience!
Giorgos Xatzipavlou has been winning over audiences throughout Greece for years now with this past season being one of his busiest, racking up over 140 shows including a 9-stop European tour! He’s currently writing his next comedy special, part of which he will be performing on this tour.
Sharing the stage with Angelo is not something that just happened. Giorgos has performed with various English language comedians (e.g. Alistair Barrie, Ben Norris and Paul Thorne) and is honoured that he will be joining Angelo to bring laughter to 4 very lucky audiences throughout Greece.
Who is Angelo Tsarouchas?
Angelo is a world-famous comedian. He has performed throughout the world, from Canada to Australia, either performing solo or as a guest for comedians such as Russell Peters or Vince Vaughan. He also combines an amazing career in stand-up with appearances in movies and TV shows such as: “Mad Men”, “Last Comic Standing”, “John Q”, “The Recruit” and “Cinderella Man.
Angelo is coming to Greece with his new show entitled “Appetite for Discussion” in which he “serves” his experiences living in both the Greek and American culture, “garnished” with lots of laughter. Amongst other things, he riffs on how different Greek family life is and how it is growing up in the diaspora.
Make sure to buy your tickets early for this stand-up comedy special which will undoubtedly be an exceptional comedy experience.

Dissolving Localities: An Audiovisual Performance
After its presentation in Madrid, Paris, Krakow, Los Angeles and other major cities, Dissolving Localities project will be presented in Athens, at the Athens School of Fine Arts, on Monday 8th of October.
Dissolving Localities was created as an artistic platform to connect cities and art by taking the daily life of the cities' inhabitants and transforming them into artistic expression. The project was originally created in Jerusalem where artists from all over the world cooperated in order to collect audiovisual material of the city, which was then mixed live and presented as a performance.
The project then evolved into connecting Jerusalem with other cities around the world and it has already been presented in Madrid, Paris, Krakow, Los Angeles et al.
Emmanuel Witzthum, Thomas Köner and Arik Futterman the three basic members of project, in collaboration with Greek video-artist Eleni Zervou, will be hosted in Athens for a week. During this period they will explore the urban scene and collect audiovisual material of the city and its inhabitants. After this process, the material collected will be edited in audio-visual segments of the city, which will be mixed live on stage by the artists. By re-presenting the city to its inhabitants, the project will lead to raising new perspectives and views for audience and artists alike.

Wanderlust Greece - The Love-List Of Crete
After spending 15 days on the island of Crete, Discover Greece recently released their 4th season of Wanderlust Greece, promoting the island's extraordinary beauty. The aim of their campaign is to increase the average spending of tourists, as well as to encourage longer stays to see more of Crete. After watching this video, it wouldn't be hard to do just that.

Must-See Exhibits At The National Archaeological Museum In Athens
With over 11,000 exhibits at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, it's easy to feel overwhelmed trying to see it all! Luckily, Why Athens put together this list of 7 things you must see while you're visiting the largest museum in Greece.
The Kore and Kouros
The Kore (young maiden) and Kouros (young male) were discovered in Mirenda, south-east of Athens in 1972, with the female Kore being fully preserved and considered one of the most important pieces of Archaic art in existence. Both statues were created by the sculptor Aristion of Paros around 550-540BC.
Zeus or Poseidon
Zeus or Poseidon, the museum itself asks the same question as the experts can’t agree but the locals will tell you it is Zeus. Found in a shipwreck off the island of Euboea (Evia) the hollow cast bronze statue dates back to the early Classical period around 460BC and is one of the few original pieces in existence from this time.
The Horse and Jockey
Discovered in the same shipwreck as the statue of Zeus, the Horse and Jockey is one of the Museum's most famous exhibits. The statue is virtually life-size at 2.9 meters long and 2.1 meters high, and it is one of the very few sculptures depicting a racing horse.
The Antikythera Mechanism
Sponge divers found the Antikythera Mechanism off the coast of the island Antikythera in 1901. Considered to be the world's first computer, the Antikythera Mechanism comprises a complex system of over 30 mechanical gears and is the most complicated ancient item ever found, according to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports.

Matthew McConaughey On Jimmy Fallon - "I Didn't Want To Leave Greece"
Hollywood movie star and heart-throb, Matthew McConaughey, recently appeared on Jimmy Fallon's 'The Tonight Show' to promote his new film called 'White Boy Rick.' While they did talk about the film, what caught our attention was his mention of his love for Greece!
McConaughey and his family, including his mother, father-in-law, wife, and kids, as well as Woody Harrelson's family, recently spent 3 weeks in a house in Antiparos this summer, relishing the Greek lifestyle. In the funny clip below, McConaughey tells Fallon about how his family loved Greece so much, that they decided to extend their holiday. However, when his mom was prepared to leave as planned, it didn't take too much convincing for her to stay!

Wind Energy Production In Greece Is Set To Increase 50% By 2022
In a recent report by the Wind Energy in Europe: Outlook to 2022, Greece is about to see a 50% increase of about 1,300 MW between the period of 2018 and 2022. This is compared to Greece's wind energy capacity at the end of last year.
Panagiotis Ladakakos, president of the Hellenic Wind Energy Scientific Association is committed to promoting green energy in the country stating, "Greece needs to multiply its efforts and to exceed significantly the current estimate for new wind power installations in the near future."
The Wind Energy in Europe report also stated that 2019 is looking like it will be a record year for new wind energy installations. Currently, Germany is the leading country in the EU for the production of wind energy.
