Athens Epidaurus Festival 2021: Live!

In the past, adding the word 'live' next to the title of the Athens Epidaurus Festival would have been considered an overstatement, maybe even a mistype. Of course the biggest cultural festival in Greece, and one of the oldest in Europe, would be live! What else could it possibly be? Well, we all know what happened in 2020.

Rolling forward to the announcement of this year’s program for the Athens Epidaurus Festival, the people behind AEF have now learned all the tricks on how to carefully balance the obstacles of social distancing with the requirements of a real life event - and with the anticipation and bottled creativity of a culturally-barren year, the Athens Epidaurus Festival has announced its 5-month-long, 80-show-strong live program!

The 2021 summer season will be focused mainly on works by Greek artists, leaving the autumn season to shoot for the safer actualization of international events. Due to the ongoing pandemic, all performance dates are subject to change so do make sure to regularly check with the festival’s schedule.

FokiaNou Art Space - Fragility Of Breath

FokiaNou Art Space is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Geeta Roopnarine, “Fragility of Breath.” Geeta Roopnarine is an interdisciplinary artist working within the intersection of art, science, and technology. Her process is inspired by the archaeology of things, unearthing layers of meanings, and in making connections between cultural and historical artefacts. Her background includes Indian, Trinidadian and Greek cultures and she draws upon images and myths to transform the familiar into the unfamiliar.

Prana, the Sanskrit word for breath, life force, which permeates reality on all levels including inanimate things is her starting point to pose questions about mind-body ‘dichotomy’ and what it means to be a breathing body. Paper, a fragile material, interacts with watercolor and mark making and effects a collaboration between artist and material. Watercolor, poems, and 3D installation create a liminal space between abstraction and reality within the context of human and non-human.

Geeta Roopnarine was born in Trinidad and Tobago and lives in Athens. She trained as a forensic scientist before studying sculpture at Athens School of Fine Arts (Professor George Lappas). She recently completed an MA in Computational Arts at Goldsmiths, (Univ of London) and has taken part in exhibitions in Greece, London, and New York.

The use of masks and social distancing are required in all areas of the space, including the roof terrace, halls and elevator.

FokiaNou Art Space is an artist-run project space in the intimacy of a small apartment in an old building in the center of Athens. The space encourages collaborative creative efforts between Greek and foreign artists, thereby promoting and supporting the local art community. The space hosts exhibitions, workshops and projects under the direction of two artists, Mary Cox and Panagiotis Voulgaris. www.fokianou247.gr

Park Your Cinema Kids | SNFCC

In this summer’s Park Your Cinema Kids, we invite our young film buffs and their families to discover incredible heroes in worlds that defy the imagination, to embrace tales based on compassion, and to build bridges that abolish differences and create a universe of love and trust.

In all of these stories, the heroes break away from the safety of their world (like Elsa and Anna, who seek the truth beyond Arendelle), choose their unexpected families (like Paddington, the lovable bear, in London), meet the friends with whom they’ll share unforgettable adventures (like the boy who forges an unbreakable bond with the Iron Giant), choose kindness over prejudice (like Shaun the Sheep, when he comes across an alien weed) and, of course, the adventure that makes all of this possible (like the revelation of the Giant Pear).

Every day, kids are faced with the reminder that the world around us is not black and white: it is multicolored, multifaceted, complex, like these wonderful films chosen by the Athens International Children’s Film Festival, which make up the most exciting summer cinema season at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

Athens Music Week 2021: Hybrid Edition

Get ready for lots of music, innovative web events, and a very special live stage!

From the 22nd to the 26th of June 2021, Athens Music Week (AMW) will be back at Technopolis Athens, to offer insights around all facets of the music industry, through selected talks, workshops, seminars, showcases, and a grand live event.

How can Greek musicians make a name for themselves in Greece and abroad? How large is the loyal following of the Greek Hip-hop scene, and what are the latest trends in Greek music? Does gender balance exist in the music industry? What do Spotify, Bandcamp and Clubhouse have in common? How can you build a music career via Tik Tok? What are Copyrights, what are Royalties, how do they work, and what does blockchain technology have to do with them? Is virtual reality the future for concerts? And how does this relate to Fortnite? What is cultural management, and which opportunities can propel Greek artists into the international charts from the comfort of their own couch? Do music and reality tv competitions actually help the artists who participate in them? And how does a professional chef feature into all of this?

This year’s Athens Music Week conference will be focusing on all these topics and more, spanning all facets of the music industry, from recording and live gigs, to copyrights and the future of the music industry, to the current music trends.

Although there is free admission, you will first need to reserve your seat.
