Benizelos Mansion

The Benizelos Mansion has been recorded as one of the oldest houses in Athens. It belonged to Angelos Benizelos, born in 1490 and a student of an important philosopher of the time. At the time, he was elected as a represantative of the Greeks living in Venice and was also a teacher, just like his father.

The mansion was then a home to the daughter of Angelos Benizelos, Regoula Benizelou, who in the 16th century became a nun and died after the Turks tortured her for her Christian works.

Today the house stands as a place to visit and admire. Visitors can also enjoy events, such as theatrical plays, photography exhibits and classical music concerts.
The Egnatia Odos is part of the European E90 highway that runs from Istanbul to Italy and as BBC writes, "one of the most fascinating (and fastest) drives across Greece." Completed in 2009, it starts from the Turkish border crossing of Kipi in Thrace and goes to the Ionian Sea at Igoumenitsa.

From BBC Travel, "While (not only) Greek drivers get a thrill out of shooting for 200km/hour speeds on the highway's long, flat expanses, for travellers the major reward lies in the close access the Egnatia Odos provides to many towns of historic and culinary interest, all complemented by an ever-changing scenery quite different from elsewhere in Greece."

"When approaching from Turkey the earthy eastern plains of Thrace are first to emerge, with their vivid patches of sunflowers, rolling fields of wheat and storks' nests dotting the telephone poles. The first major settlement, Alexandroupoli, is a pretty port town with good seafood restaurants, and just west of the Evros Delta, an important migratory route perfect for bird-watchers. Alexandroupoli is also the jumping-off point for ferries to Samothraki island."

In Ancient Greece, public life was at its most vibrant in the agorá! It was a public space that played a significant role in every aspect of social life - it also served as a marketplace where merchants kept stalls or shops to sell their products. It is this idea that inspired us to create our own Agorá in the form of an open digital space on our trusted platform where the international community can gather, navigate, and discover local products by local Greek businesses, designers, food producers, artists, authors, and independent creators.

We’re so excited to announce the launch of our
Agorá Marketplace - a digital space of local Greek products!

Although this new section of our website comes to life during a vital time to support local business and local economy, for us at XpatAthens AMKE, our Agorá is an added piece of our whole platform that further empowers our mission of contributing to the local community while living global experiences. Learn more about our Agorá below.

Why did we create the Agorá Marketplace? What’s behind the idea?
Our Agorá was created with the intention of connecting the international community with local Greek products. Always in alignment with our mission and nonprofit causes, we strive to bridge our readers with the local community in order to enhance their experience of living in Greece, while simultaneously supporting local businesses.

Just like it was in Ancient Greece, our Agorá is a marketplace where our community of global citizens can gather and explore local Greek products of quality, value and authenticity.

Who benefits from the Agorá Marketplace?
Everyone. Our Agorá is a space dedicated to supporting local businesses and local producers by sharing their products and telling their stories; while giving Greece’s international community the chance to discover local products and support local businesses. In other words, this unique space on XpatAthens benefits both our readers and local Greek businesses.

Why share your products in our marketplace?
Listing your products in our digital marketplace means that you’ll be seen by our unique community of readers who follow us both locally and internationally. Our Agorá is about connecting people with local Greek products and we do this with the intention of sharing and connecting our readers with local businesses.

Note, products are never purchased directly from XpatAthens, they are simply showcased (shared) in our Agorá. Those interested in making a purchase are directed via a hyperlink to the producers website directly. Additionally, XpatAthens does not receive commissions or donations for products discovered on our platform.

How much does it cost to post a product?
In alignment with the rest of our uploading fees, the charge for uploading products to our platform is as follows:

1 Product Post: €10 +vat (€12,40)
1 Year of Product Posts (limited to 5 monthly): €75 +vat (€93)
1 Year of Product Posts for Nonprofits & Charities: No Charge

How does XpatAthens make money from Agorá Marketplace?
XpatAthens does not receive commissions or donations for products that are discovered in our Agorá. As outlined above, we charge a small amount for uploading products to our platform. Products are never purchased directly from XpatAthens, they are simply showcased (shared) in our Agorá. Those interested in purchasing a product are directed via a hyperlink to the producer's website directly.

Glyfada Neighborhood Guide

Home turf to millionaires and popstars, this most commercial of beachy suburbs lies 16km from the Acropolis. Often compared to Beverly Hills, there are luxe, leafy pockets where you could indeed be on Rodeo Drive: jazzy Kyprou and Laodikis Streets with their upscale boutiques, imported palm trees and style-conscious pavement cafes.

But Glyfada is a game of two halves. Glam and grit presently exist side by side in this recession-hit postcode, especially in the former social HQ of Zisimopoulou Street, where a slew of boarded-up cafes and restaurants at the lower end evoke less salubrious parts of downtown L.A.
Do you remember those times when a good laugh was all you needed to change your mood and become more joyful? We all know that laughter is like medicine. In fact, research has shown that a good laugh has the power to relieve stress, improve your immune system and shift your perspective.

Think about it. You cannot feel stressed when you laugh, can you? On the contrary, you may feel relieved even if it’s for the short term. I’m sure you’ve noticed how easy and how often children laugh out loud.

Among others, laughter is a powerful communication tool. It brings people together and strengthens relationships. Here are some practical ideas to increase laughter in your life:

  • Watch a comedy, a funny TV series, or a funny video on YouTube. There’s plenty to choose from.
  • Share a good joke with friends, family, and colleagues. A good sense of humor is essential so all parties involved have fun.
  • Play with your pet. Dogs may show a more playful and joyful attitude but cats can be lots of fun too.
  • Watch your favorite stand-up comedian. Whether in a live show or not they will definitely make you laugh.
  • Tell funny stories with your kids. It can be something that happened to you or to someone near you during the day or a story from your childhood. Make sure you have a screen-free environment.
  • Laugh at your mistakes. This may be tough sometimes but learning not to take yourself too seriously takes out some weight off your shoulders.
  • Look at funny photos. They can be photos of your children or from your childhood. Even better, share them with your funny friends.
  • Spend time with people who bring you joy. Get your distance from grumpy people and choose to be around those who understand the value of good, authentic laughter.
Don’t wait for something big or fancy. Make up a reason, any reason, and just laugh.

Greek swimmer Apostolos Christou made history on Thursday by winning the silver medal in the men's 200m backstroke at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Christou’s remarkable performance set a new national record with a time of 1:54.82, securing Greece’s first Olympic medal in pool swimming in 128 years.

Breaking a 128-Year Drought

Christou’s silver marks a monumental achievement for Greece, as the previous seven swimming medals were all earned at the 1896 Athens Olympic Games. The most recent honor before Christou's victory was an open water silver medal by Spyridon Gianniotis at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

A Stellar 2024 for Christou

The 27-year-old swimmer has had an impressive year. His journey began with a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke at the Doha World Championships in February. He continued to shine at the European Aquatics Championships in Belgrade, where he clinched gold in both the 50m and 100m backstroke events and contributed to the Greek men's 4x100m freestyle relay team, which won bronze.

A Historic Day

Christou dedicated his silver medal to his family, calling Thursday the best day of his life. His performance not only brought pride to Greece but also highlighted his remarkable talent and determination.

Greece's Success in Paris

Christou’s achievement follows another significant win for Greece at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. On Wednesday, July 31st, judoka Thodoris Tselidis secured a bronze medal in the men’s -90kg weight class, earning Greece its first medal of the Games.

Final Standings in the 200m Backstroke

Gold:
Hubert Kos (Hungary) – 1:54.26
Silver: Apostolos Christou (Greece) – 1:54.82
Bronze: Roman Mityukov (Switzerland) – 1:54.85

Apostolos Christou’s silver medal is a historic milestone for Greek swimming, marking a triumphant return to the Olympic podium after more than a century.

My Week in Athens… May 2

This week we hear from our new member Kristie, who spent the last few weeks in Greece and Athens…

“I am lucky to be able to travel a lot – my work affords me the opportunity to move around all the time. So much so, that I don’t really have a place that I consider ‘home’. I’m a person who can honestly say ‘wherever I lay my hat is home’ – and I mean it. This lifestyle is not about wealth and riches – quite the opposite: this lifestyle is about having different experiences and the richness of meeting interesting people wherever I go.

The last few weeks were particularly special. I spent the first ten days in the Peloponnese, staying in a rural house, looking after the pets for the owners who were away. This was lovely and peaceful, a world away from the urban chaos of London, my previous destination. Then I came to Athens, determined to see the ancient sites that I had learned about during my studies. I wouldn’t say I had many expectations – I take each experience as it comes.

The ruins and rocks I expected. What I didn’t expect was the realization that Athens is more about what you feel than what you see. There are of course some beautiful parts of the city – and there are some not-so-beautiful parts of the city. But this feeling is undeniable, this unique mix of highly charged and yet incredibly relaxed energy – this is how I will think of Athens and its people.

This is a city that one must experience, rather that ‘tour’. And hopefully at the end of your experience, you will say ‘I get it’ – as I did. It is not a city without challenges and troubles and woes – but I believe that even these things add to the particular energy that is Athens. I understand why so many choose to live here – also not because of wealth and riches, but rather about the richness of everyday life. I found myself thinking that my hat might like to stay here for a while…”

Thanks for the inspiration, Kristie!

Until next week,

Jack

In this weekly space, keep up with ‘Jack’ as he navigates daily life in Athens… Anecdotes, stories, hits & misses, the good, the bad and, well, the rest…
