Romantic Guide To Athens

It's almost Valentine's day, and love is in the air. So, if you are searching for romantic spots in Athens to spend quality time with your significant other, or even to pop the question, we've got you covered with some of the city's most idyllic locations!
Julia and Alexander N. Diomedes Botanic Garden
The Diomedes Botanical Garden is undoubtedly one of the most romantic places in the busy city of Athens. Even though it is located in the city center, it very often goes unnoticed. In the city's hidden paradise, you'll be able to stroll among 3,500 plant species and discover the different sections, such as the arboretum, the ornament plants section, the historic plants section, and the greenhouse. The ambiance and beautiful setting of this garden make for the perfect romantic backdrop for you and your loved one.

The Tiny Neighborhood of Anafiotika
This tiny scenic neighborhood in Athens is one of the most iconic romantic places in the city. Anafiotika lies on the northeast side of the Acropolis hill and is part of the historic neighborhood of Plaka. The settlement dates back to the era of Otto of Greece when workers from the island of Anafi came to Athens to work as construction workers in the refurbishment of the King's palace. When you reach up, you'll feel like you're in a Cycladic village within the city tiny with white houses, narrow alleys, and bougainvillea plants. In this oasis of tranquility, the intensity of Athens will seem miles away!

Mount Lycabettus
Lycabettus is the highest peak in Athens and one of the city's most iconic landmarks. At 300 meters above sea level, Lycabettus offers unsurpassed views of the city. In fact, on a clear day, you'll be able to see the island of Aegina shimmering on the horizon. The top of the hill can be reached by foot, but the easiest way to get there is via the cable car that runs every half hour from the station on Aristippou street. Mount Lycabettus is home to the picturesque chapel of St. George, a restaurant, and an open-air theater. Climb up in the evening to enjoy exceptional views of the city below!

Lake Vouliagmeni

For those of you looking to get away from overcrowded cityscapes on Valentine’s Day, consider going to Lake Vouliagmeni. It’s a jaw-droppingly beautiful geological setting with warm waters that make it the perfect place to take your significant other for a relaxing and romantic day. It’s also most definitely worth staying to see the lake light up in the evening and become even more romantic.
For the couples that bond over food, the lake also has an all-day bar-restaurant, and is very near one of Vouliagmeni’s oldest pastry shops (Aqua Marina) and the very popular Waffle House. If both of you want to be alone, though, consider packing a picnic and choosing one of the many beautiful, quiet corners to sit in.

Are you dreaming of crystal clear waters, stunning white sand, and swaying palm trees? Well, you don't have to travel thousands of miles away to find your exotic paradise. The miniature archipelago of Petalioi, consisting of 10 unspoiled islands, is located southeast of Euboea - just one hour from Athens!

Rocky shores, golden sand, emerald waters, and lush vegetation create a scenery of pristine beauty - one that majestically combines wild nature with peaceful tranquility. The islands' beaches, hidden in scenic coves, are ideal for swimming, surfing, sailing, and diving. Access is only by boat, attracting international jet setters and wealthy travelers.

Most of the islands are uninhabited except for three that belong to private citizens. Megalonisos, the complex's largest island, is the property of two shipping families, while 200 acres belong to Picasso's children, Claude and Paloma.

Impressive are the imposing villas, one on each island, giving the feeling of a true VIP neighborhood. On the second largest island, one can admire the white mansion belonging to the Empirikos family, while, right across it, Karnezis' villa sits gracefully.

Although direct access to these private islands is prohibited, one can always enjoy these glorious crystal waters by boat hire or small cruise. Sounds lovely doesn't it!?

Nymphaio is a beautiful village located just outside Florina in West Macedonia, Greece. It has been often included on lists of the “Ten Most Beautiful Villages of Europe” in travel guides.

It has also won UNESCO’s “Melina Mercouri International Prize” for its excellent management of the area’s cultural heritage and the surrounding natural environment.

Nymphaio, which lies at an altitude of 1,360 meters (4,462 feet) is nestled along the slopes of Mt. Verno (also known as Mt. Vitsi), surrounded by dense forests.

Its unique architecture, impressive mansions made of stone, stone-paved streets, and the incredible natural beauty of the surrounding area captivate all visitors to Nymphaio. The village has thankfully been able to maintain its original character, as all new buildings must strictly follow traditional forms of architecture.

Vlach nomads were the first people recorded to have settled here, in the early 1300s, and the town was formerly known as Niviesta or Nevesta all the way up to 1929. Beginning in the late 17th century, the town became one of the largest silversmithing centers in the Balkans, and it remained dominant in that industry for almost three centuries.

Nymphaio is known for its traditional mansions

The glory days of Nymphaio are reflected in the impressive stone-built mansions located all around the village. Although Nymphaio was affected in the 1950s by out-migrants and the 1960s, it has been revived today by the return of its people who wanted to come back to their roots in this ancient and beautiful mountain village.

The nearby village of Zazari and Cheimaditida Lake delimit an area of exceptional natural beauty in Florina. The two nearby natural lakes, two of the largest in Florina, are worth visiting as they are home to hundreds of species of birds, mammals, and fish as well as the ferruginous duck, which is protected as an endangered species.

Apart from its charming architecture and natural landscape, Nymphaio offers many activities for those who are lucky enough to visit. The ARCTUROS shelter, constructed by this non-governmental organization that protects brown bears, is located in a natural beech forest and is home to ten bears who formerly lived in captivity.

Since 1994, Oenorama has served as the meeting point for those who shape Greek wine, including industry legends and pioneering producers experimenting with indigenous yeasts, less common Greek varietals, and natural vinification techniques.

The signature Cycladic architecture, the striking contrast of the Aegean’s deep blue with the red, black, and white hues of the volcanic cliffs, the traditional caldera villages, the refined gastronomy, and the island’s renowned wines—combined with a sense of luxury and the world-famous sunset—once again created the perfect setting for sports tourism in Santorini.

In this breathtaking atmosphere, and with ideal weather conditions, Santorini Experience celebrated its 10th anniversary, reaffirming its status as one of the top international sports tourism events worldwide.

From October 9 to 13, Santorini had more than 3,500 participations aged 10 to 74, from 40 countries and 4 continents —America, Oceania, Asia, and Europe—as part of Santorini Experience 2025, which featured a dynamic schedule of over 14 activities, offering unforgettable moments of emotion and inspiration.

Participants traveled from every corner of the globe, including the USA, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, China, the Philippines, India, Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, England, Austria, France, Germany, Georgia, Switzerland, Ireland, Spain, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Turkey, Czech Republic, Scotland, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Cyprus, and Greece—once again establishing the event as a global reference point for sports tourism.

Thousands of athletes, companions, and visitors stayed on the volcanic island, enjoying every moment, generating over 2,000 overnight stays across more than 40 hotels.

The island’s iconic landscapes, such as the Volcano and the trail connecting Oia and Fira, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Caldera and the sweeping views of the Aegean, formed the heart of this year’s Santorini Experience activities.

Swimming from the Volcano to Fira

On Friday, October 10, participants of Santorini Experience 2025 plunged into the deep black waters surrounding the island’s Volcano, swimming toward the Old Port of Fira. They followed one of the world’s most unique open water routes—alongside dramatic volcanic cliffs and beneath the imposing beauty of the Caldera—covering 1.5 miles (2.4 km) in a once-in-a-lifetime swimming experience.

World-class swimmers gathered in Santorini to test their endurance and technique on a course that combined speed, strategy, and breathtaking natural beauty. Each athlete experienced an unforgettable challenge that showcased both the competitive and emotional spirit of open water swimming.

In the race, Olympian Yasu Fukuoka from Japan claimed first place for the second time in the event’s history, followed by Dimitris Negris in second place, and Konstantinos Stamou (swimmer of SIXT) securing third place. Among the women, Maria Zafeiratou took first place, with Panagiota Giannakopoulou in second and Nora Drakou in third.

The swimming event was held in full safety in Santorini’s mesmerizing waters. The Santorini Boatmen Union played a vital role, assisting both in the execution of the race and the transport of swimmers from the Old Port of Fira to the Volcano starting point.

Participant safety was ensured by specialized lifeguards and rescue boats from the Lifeguard Patrol, Santorini Nautical Club, the Volunteer Rescue Team of Thira, and Caldera Yachting, which provided additional boats and staff to ensure the smooth and safe running of the event. The swimming activity was further supported by the Thira Port Fund, GeoThira, DEYATH (Municipal Water and Sewerage Authority of Thira), the Municipal Police, and the Loula and Evangelos Nomikos Foundation.

In collaboration with SIXT, a member of the MOTODYNAMICS Group, each athlete was provided with a mandatory safety buoy, further strengthening participant protection throughout the race. The Technical Director of the swimming event was Nikos Gemelos, an experienced coach with distinctions in the Olympic Games and World Championships.

Running with a View of the Aegean

The schedule featured three exciting trail races that gave runners a unique experience through Santorini’s picturesque alleyways and volcanic terrain — a route that blends dirt tracks with volcanic stone and offers constant, dramatic views of the Caldera. All courses started from the desalination plant in Oia, included challenging off-road sections, and finished back in Oia, allowing participants to discover Oia, Imerovigli and Firostefani along the way.

The three race distances were: the 5 km “Aristides Alafouzos” powered by Miele, the 10 km powered by SIXT, member of MOTODYNAMICS Group, and the most demanding 15 km powered by The North Face — each route revealing the island’s whitewashed houses, dramatic cliffs and unparalleled Aegean vistas.

In the 15 km race, George Dimoulas and Alexandros Tzoumakas (The North Face athletes) crossed the line together to share first place, demonstrating outstanding endurance and teamwork. In the shorter distances, Patryk Sobczyk from Poland dominated the day by winning both the 5 km and 10 km races, underlining his superiority over the shorter courses.

Women’s podiums were equally impressive: in the 15 km, Nikoleta Tzavara, athlete of The North Face claimed first place, in the 10 km, Deva Spyridoula took first place, and in the 5 km, Denisa Balla finished first, each athlete delivering excellent performances on the island’s demanding terrain.

Runners were energized before the starts by a warm-up session led by physical education instructor Mandy Persaki, which helped prepare athletes for the technical and scenic courses.

Santorini possesses unique characteristics — it is blessed by nature with an exceptional geological environment and distinctive landscapes. Santorini Experience offers an unforgettable experience for all participants, and we will continue to support sporting events so that sport can flourish on our island”.

Flag Football Makes Its Debut in Greece!

In parallel with the Santorini Experience, the NFL team Los Angeles Chargers inaugurated a new era for American football in Greece, presenting the first-ever NFL Flag Football Event.

The schedule included training camps for children aged 11–13 and teenagers aged 13 and above, through which young participants had the opportunity to learn the basic principles of flag football and test their skills alongside top athletes.

Spectators also enjoyed a spectacular exhibition game featuring former and active NFL players, such as: Melvin Gordon, former running back of the Los Angeles Chargers, Niko Koutouvides, Greek-American former linebacker and Super Bowl XLII participant, Melina Malaxos, Greek-Swedish player and coach, Members of the Greek Aegean Elite team, and Coaches of the Los Angeles Chargers. The event offered unforgettable moments for both young fans and adults alike.

The experience concluded with a special Watch Party, where guests watched the Chargers’ victory over the Dolphins live on COSMOTE TV, which holds the exclusive NFL broadcasting rights in Greece.

This initiative formed part of the broader effort to promote flag football internationally, ahead of its inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The introduction of American football to Greece was made possible through the active support of Stoiximan, which, as a Silver Sponsor, enhanced both the event and the island through its social initiatives. Stoiximan’s involvement promoted amateur sport, Santorini’s sports tourism, and the advancement of healthy athletic values.
