Supermarkets To Start Charging For Plastic Bags In 2017
Starting in 2017, Greek supermarkets will start charging for the use of plastic bags. The charge will be 5 to 10 euro cents.
This change for Greece comes after many EU countries have already implemented the charge for decades. The charge will hopefully encourage patrons to bring their own reusable bags as to cut down on plastic waste.

Athens Converts More Streets Into Pedestrian-Only Zones
As of May 2017, residents and visitors of Athens will find two more pedestrianized streets in the city center. Cars will no longer be able to turn left from Voreos Street to Karoris and Agathonos streets. It is reminded that vehicles are allowed to enter Athinas Street only from the streets of Mitropoleos, Karagiorgis and Sofokleous.
The streets Agathonos and Karoris (up to Voreou Street) have been pedestrianized as part of the municipality’s program to restore the ‘commercial triangle of Athens.’ The sides of the this triangle are the three main squares of the city: Omonia, Syntagma and Monastiraki.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Beats Federer And Reaches His First Grand Slam Quarter-Final
* Update: January 22, 2019
Stefanos Tsitsipas has reached the Australian Open Semi Finals this morning, after winning the match against Roberto Bautista Agut.
Stefanos Tsitsipas has reached the Australian Open Semi Finals this morning, after winning the match against Roberto Bautista Agut.
Tsitsipas is the first Greek tennis player to make it to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam. Furthermore, he is the youngest man to reach the Australian Open semi-finals since Andy Roddick in 2003 and the youngest at any Grand Slam since Novak Djokovic at the US Open in 2007.
The emerging Greek tennis player will face Rafael Nadal on Thursday, January 24 and everyone in Greece will be cheering him on!
The emerging Greek tennis player will face Rafael Nadal on Thursday, January 24 and everyone in Greece will be cheering him on!
Good luck, Stefanos!
20-year-old Greek tennis star, Stefanos Tsitsipas grew up idolizing Roger Federer. With his 99 tour-level titles and more than 300 weeks atop the ATP rankings, Federer is the one player that Stefanos Tsitsipas has been striving to become like.
Over the years, Tsitsipas has pored over Federer’s highlights on YouTube, both to admire his level and see how the Swiss’ opponents tried to attack him.
So, in a way Tsitsipas’ first ATP Head2Head match against Federer, in the fourth round of the Australian Open, was surreal; beating Federer in four sets for the biggest win of his life, a dream come true. “I just managed to close that match and stay strong, beat my idol,” Tsitsipas said. “My idol today became pretty much my rival.”
Stefanos' victory over one of the most celebrated tennis players of all time has brought him to the Australian Open quarter finals, where he will play against Roberto Bautista Agut on Tuesday January 22.
Roger Federer himself praised the work that Stefanos has put in the past couple of years, pointing out his wins over Novak Djokovic and Kevin Anderson as signs of his progress. “That's what you need to do to get to the next level. He's doing that. It's really nice for him,” Federer said. “I see him definitely being high up in the game for a long time. That was a good night for him tonight.”

Back En Vogue
Vogue magazine hit the Greek newsstands again, after a seven-year absence as publishers believe that Greece's economic recovery will revive the appetite for glossy fashion and lifestyle magazines. Vogue Greece, the magazine’s 26th international edition, is run by 29-year old editor-in-chief, Thaleia Karafyllidou.
“Dear Vogue Greece, welcome back again,” Anna Wintour, Vogue editor-in-chief since 1988, wrote in the comeback edition titled “Eyes on the future” and starring model Bella Hadid on its cover.
“Your return after years of absence fills us with joy. Greece faced problems and lived dramatic moments, I can only imagine how tough it was. However, the signs of recovery are now visible, even here in America.”
Vogue’s relaunch also involves a digital edition of the magazine, packed with fashion, lifestyle, and beauty news from all over the world.

Greek Government Pledges To Enforce Anti-Smoking Law
Greece's first legislation concerning the curbing of smoking went into effect ten years ago on July 1, 2009. However, Greeks have continued their longstanding tradition of smoking, especially in bars, cafes, and restaurants, as if the bill had never existed. Today, the country's new Prime Minister pledges that his administration will finally enforce the pre-existing, anti-smoking laws.
Fortunately, at the time the measure was drafted in 2008, 40% of Greeks were regular smokers whereas, by 2014, the percentage dropped to 27%–mainly due to the economic crisis.
The enforcement of the existing anti-smoking laws requires a determined administration that will cast aside concerns about political costs. After all, the majority of Greeks are now non-smokers.
