The universities of Athens and Yale have signed a memorandum of understanding in an initiative spearheaded by two Greeks, UoA professor of analytical chemistry Nikolaos Thomaidis and epidemiology professor Vasilis Vasiliou from the American university.

The initiative foresees two joint studies programs, one at the undergraduate level in environmental sciences and public health, and a master’s degree in environmental health.

Set to launch in the 2022-2023 academic year, the programs will be conducted in English and entail tuition fees, while graduates will come out with a double degree from both institutions.

The UoA and Yale also plan a center of excellence in environmental and public health studies bringing together research teams from the two universities. Joint papers have already been submitted on the subject of Covid-19, as a precursor to this initiative.

National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum is the largest museum in Greece and one of the most important in the world. Originally destined to receive all the 19th century excavations, mainly from Attica and other parts of the country, it gradually took the form of a central National Archaeological Museum and was enriched with finds from all parts of the Greek world. His rich collections, enumerating more than 11,000 exhibits, offer the visitor a panorama of ancient Greek culture from the beginning of prehistory to the late antiquity.

The museum is housed in the imposing neoclassical building, built at the end of the 19th century in designs by L. Lange and eventually formed by Ernst Ziller. Its exhibition grounds, dozens of halls on each floor, cover an area of 8,000 m² and houses the five major permanent collections:

• The Collection of Prehistoric Antiquities, including works of the great civilizations that developed in the Aegean from the 6th millennium to 1050 BC. (Neolithic, Cycladic and Mycenaean) and finds from the prehistoric settlement of Thira.
• The Sculpture Collection, which presents the evolution of ancient Greek sculpture from the 7th century. B.C. until the 5th c. AD, through unique works of art.
• The Vase and Minerals Collection, which includes representative works of ancient Greek ceramics from the 11th century. B.C. up to the Roman era, as well as the Stathatos Collection, a timeless collection of miniature artifacts.
• The Metallurgical Works Collection with many unique original works, statues, figurines and miniature works.
• Finally, the unique for Greece Collection of Egyptian and Eastern Antiquities with works of art, dating from the pre-emptive period (5000 BC) to the times of the Roman conquest.

The museum has a rich photographic archive and a library with many rare editions, which is continuously enriched for the needs of scientific staff. It also has modern workshops for the maintenance of metallic objects, ceramics, stone, casting workshops, organic materials, photographic workshop and chemical laboratory. There are also halls of periodical exhibitions, a lecture theater, as well as one of the largest collections of the Archaeological Resources Fund.

The National Archaeological Museum accepts thousands of visitors each year. Along with the exhibition of exhibits, he organizes periodical exhibitions and participates by lending his works to exhibitions both in Greece and abroad.

In addition, it serves as a research center for scientists from all over the world and participates in the development of special educational and other programs. Archaeological lectures are organized in the amphitheater, while innovation is also the possibility of guiding people with hearing problems by scientific staff.

Record of participations with 5,500+ entries from 34 countries, 70+ activities, 2,000+ children from Messinia, 60+ athletes with disabilities in the Run For All, record in tennis

The historic return of Dean Spanos, the only Greek owner of an NFL team, to his father's village

The most emotional awards night in the 14 years of the institution, to the gold Olympic medalist and World Champion Dimosthenis Tampakos the "Alexandros Nikolaidis" award

With the background of the enchanting Messinia and in absolute harmony with nature, the Messinia Challenge returned dynamically from May 7 to 10, 2026, writing a new page in the history of Greek sports tourism.

In its 14th edition and in the first year of its new era after the rebranding from Navarino Challenge to Messinia Challenge, the multi-award-winning event, the biggest multisport event in Greece and top wellness in Europe according to international tourism awards presented in London, gathered over 5,500 entries from people of all ages and abilities, from small children to professional athletes, who traveled from more than 34 countries and 4 continents to participate in over 70 separate activities and 20 Olympic sports. It is, today, the event that brings the most sports and the most athletes to so many parts of Messinia, close to the local community and the local economy.

The activities took place at Costa Navarino, at the hotels The Westin Resort Costa Navarino and The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort, at Navarino Agora, as well as in other points of the wider Messinia: in Kalamata, in Methoni, in Eva Messini and in Pylos.

The first sustainable running races in Greece

Messinia Challenge 2026 marked a milestone for Greek sports: it is the first comprehensively sustainable sports running event in the country, with sustainability integrated into every detail, from the paper of the bib to the vehicle that led the races, and in absolute respect for the Natura 2000 protected areas.
  • Bib numbers from seed paper, paper with integrated seeds, which after the race can be planted and become a flower or plant. The memory of the race is literally transformed into new life.
  • Participation ribbons from recyclable materials, printed with photos of Messinia.
  • Official t-shirts from 42K Running, made from recyclable materials.
  • Medals from "trash," made from 100% recycled plastic for the finishers of the 10km race powered by MOTODYNAMICS Group. Plastic that others threw away was turned into a symbol of victory and effort in the hands of the athletes, within the framework of the Team Recycle program with the primary schools of Messinia.
  • Wooden medals with Braille engraving, for the participants of the 1km Run For All, with a recyclable ribbon. It is not an aesthetic choice, it is an act: inclusion becomes tangible and accessible to all, including those who do not see.
  • Children's road races with a sustainable footprint, as the two running races for ages 0–9 and 10–14, powered by VIKOS, were supported by the provision of wooden medals, with the aim of promoting environmental awareness and responsible practices from childhood.
  • Reusable water bottle as a souvenir for each participant of the 10km race.
  • 100% electric fleet of support vehicles, in collaboration with NIO and SIXT, members of the MOTODYNAMICS Group, with zero emissions, zero noise and electric bicycles on the support routes.
  • The electric NIO Firefly as lead car of the 10km race, proving that electric mobility goes hand-in-hand with sports of high demands.
  • Solar generator to cover energy needs, with zero use of oil, and a 21km station with premium Miele coffee machines powered exclusively by solar energy.
  • Divari beach cleaning with the MOTODYNAMICS Group, in collaboration with volunteers from the University of Piraeus, Deree – The American College of Greece and Humanity Greece.
  • Eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices throughout the event, with part of the equipment operating with solar energy and zero emissions.
  • While the Icebreaker Yoga activity was done with mats from cork.  It is not a slogan. It is the new identity of the organization, and a living message: sports can and must coexist harmoniously with the environment.
Strategic cooperation with BUONDI CRAFT: from your cup to the earth

In strategic cooperation with BUONDI CRAFT, Messinia Challenge 2026 implemented a complete program for the collection and recycling of coffee residues, with the support of Miele. The program was implemented at selected points of the organization such as: the areas of the running races, the tennis courts, the golf courses, the Morias restaurant and the registration area in the Great Hall. Faithful to its commitment to return value to the earth from which it comes, BUONDI CRAFT proceeds with the composting of coffee residues, which are utilized as a natural soil improver fertilizer. In this way, an essential cycle of circular economy is completed.

Run For All, perhaps the biggest participation of athletes with disabilities in a leisure race in recent years

The most moving moment of the event was without doubt the 1km Run For All powered by MOTODYNAMICS Group, a race that aims to unite, not to divide.
This year, over 60 athletes with disabilities took part, making Run For All perhaps one of the biggest participations of athletes with disabilities in a leisure race in recent years in Greece, and one of the most important inclusive running events in the country.

Participating in the race were athletes from the association DIAFOROZO, the SY.F.AMEA Messinia, and the gold Paralympic medalists Grigoris Polychronidis and Nasos Ghavelas, the latter with roots from Messinia and Pylos, something that gave his participation a special moving dimension: the champion who returns to his place to run beside people who share the same origin. The race was completed with tears, cheers and a very strong message: sports is a right of all, without exceptions.

Equitable Hospitality: when hospitality becomes an act of equality

MOTODYNAMICS Group implemented the term Equitable Hospitality at Messinia Challenge 2026, taking care so that athletes with disabilities and people with disability, along with their families, their caregivers and their friends could be in a safe and festive space. At the same time, employees and ambassadors of the Group ran beside the athletes as part of the same community.

Sports Culinary by Miele, when sports meet gastronomy

Gastronomy had a leading role in this year's event, through a complete program Sports Culinary by Miele that stood out for its innovation and quality, in the 5th year of Miele's participation. For the first time, Messinia Challenge presented interactive cooking workshops where the participants themselves cooked for real, they did not just watch a masterclass. Beside the premium appliances of Miele, the guests kneaded, served and enjoyed their own dishes, transforming gastronomy into a life experience.

A leading role was held by the cooking lessons with the established chef Andreas Lagos, who shared techniques of high gastronomy, secrets of the Mediterranean diet and the philosophy of "I cook to share" in a series of unique live cooking experiences. At the same time, the chef of Miele, Alexandros Syngkiridis, undertook fully the Messinia Cooking Challenge by Miele and the Pasta Station by Miele, while the lunch experience at Villa Onyx of Messinian Nest constituted an authentic culinary peak. The experience was framed by premium wine experiences from Alpha Estate, curated tasting sessions and authentic Messinian flavors, strengthening the promotion of local products.

The NIO Messinia Golf Open — record of participations

For the first time, the golf tournament The NIO Messinia Golf Open was organized at the awarded courses of Costa Navarino, a venue that in 2026 was named "World’s Best Golf Venue" and took the 1st place in the list "Top 100 European Resorts" of National Club Golfer. A special moment was the participation of the Messinian champion of Greece in golf, Christos Pantazidis, who gave to the event extra sports prestige and local identity. The event was completed with an Awards Ceremony at Villa Onyx of Messinian Nest and a lunch experience by Miele with chef Alexandros Syngkiridis.

The return of Dean Spanos to his roots, and the first NFL Flag Football Camp in Messinia

Perhaps the most moving and historic moment of this year's event was the return of Dean Spanos to Messinia, after many years, to the village where his grandfather was born, grew up, and from where his father set out so that his father could write an amazing success story in the United States of America.

Dean Spanos is today the only Greek owner of an NFL team, the Los Angeles Chargers, and his return to Eva Messini was a moment that Messinia itself was waiting for years. The "big family of Messinia Challenge" stood as the vehicle that reconnected this special story of blood and place with its roots.

In the framework of this visit, and with the support of the Los Angeles Chargers, the first NFL Flag Football Camp was organized at the field of Methoni, a pioneering camp that brought for the first time American football to the children of the Messinian land. Children of the area got to know the sport through the participation of top American and Greek-American athletes.
In the framework of the visit, the following took place:

Speech of the Olympian Antigoni Ntrismpioti to students of the Primary School of Eva Messini, with a living message that with persistence and faith nothing can stop our dreams.
Donation of equipment and commemorative gifts from the team to the school, for the needs of the children of the area.

Official presence of Dean Spanos, owner of the Los Angeles Chargers, and the NFL legend and former linebacker of the Chargers, Shawne Merriman.

Over 2,000 children of Messinia at the center

Messinia Challenge 2026 was a celebration of Messinia itself and its children. Over 1,200 children from schools of the area participated actively in educational and sports activities, living up close the magic of great Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

In collaboration with MOTODYNAMICS Group and the Municipality of Pylos – Nestor, the program “Messinia Stories: Drive to Inspire powered by MOTODYNAMICS Group” was implemented, in schools of Messinia, where the Olympians Antigoni Ntrismpioti, Dimitris Papanikolaou and the road safety instructor Thanasis Chountras spoke to the students about diversity, inclusion, road safety and the power of sports. In the open talks at Navarino Agora, a multi-space of culture and meeting with free access for all, Olympian Periklis Iakovakis, Corporate Neurosciences Psychologist Elisabeth Calbari, Dr. Spyros Sapounas, the Founder of Humanity Greece, Georgia Paraschou and the journalist Christina Vrachali also participated.

Grand speeches in Kalamata

A special moment were the open, grand speeches in Kalamata, where hundreds of citizens and youth watched the top athletes of our country sharing their personal journey, moments that will stay unforgettable and gave to the Messinian youth a message of strength, persistence and love for sports.

The most emotional awards night in the 14 years of the institution

On Saturday night, the established awards night took place at Costa Navarino, and admittedly it was the most moving night in the 14 years of history of Messinia Challenge. The presentation was undertaken by Giorgos Lentzas, while the event was conducted in the Greek language with simultaneous translation through the Evenly platform.

Tribute to the Olympian Alexandros Nikolaidis

The award "Alexandros Nikolaidis," established by the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the Messinia Challenge, was awarded this year to the gold Olympian and world champion on the rings Dimosthenis Tampakos, for his overall contribution to sports and the ethos he represents. Participating in the award were Dora Tsampazi, wife of the late Alexandros Nikolaidis, and Kostis Liarommatis, member of the Plenary of the HOC and president of the Committee "Sports and Environment."

The honorary awards
  • Nasos Ghavelas (gold Paralympic medalist) from Ms. Valia Vanezi, Senior Director, Communications Costa Navarino.
  • Maria Polyzou (marathon runner, holder of national record) from Mr. Thanos Kyriazis, Managing Director of the Miele Cluster Adria Aegean. The award had special symbolic importance: a woman who has exceeded not only her sports limits, but also her battle with cancer, meets the principles of Miele, durability, quality, stable pursuit of "Always Better."
  • Family of Elia, Dimitris and Aria Papanikolaou, from Ms. Maira Passia, Head of Sustainability & Corporate Communications of the MOTODYNAMICS Group. A family that discovers that one of its members is on the spectrum of autism and, instead of bending, stands even more united, constitutes a role model for society and "educators" through love, patience and persistence.
  • Penny Rogka (champion of Greece in volleyball), from the Mayor of Pylos – Nestor, Mr. Panagiotis Karvelas.
  • AJ Ginnis (silver World Champion of alpine skiing) — from Ms. Eugenia Tsangeta, Communications & PR Manager of KORRES.
  • Stephen Keenan (in his memory, one of the top safety divers worldwide), award received by Ms. Maria Trigkaki, Social Media Executive of VIKOS.
  • Karolina Pelendritou (8 Paralympic medals), from Mr. Giorgos Tsironis, Country Director of JYSK Greece.
  • Giannis Theocharopoulos (mountain rescue), from Mr. Elias Kanakis, Country Manager of The North Face.
  • Demis Nikolaidis (European champion), from Mr. Giorgos Leventakis, CEO & Co-Founder of Gruppo Cucine.
The night was completed with a strong message: sports is a power of unity, acceptance and inspiration. Special interest was gathered by the photo booth of SKY express, through which the company carried out a large draw for airline tickets.

The Electric Pulse by NIO, Awards Party of high aesthetics

Immediately after, the impressive Awards Party “The Electric Pulse by NIO” took place for the first time, with a DJ set from Alexandros Christopoulos in the Great Hall of Costa Navarino.
The name “The Electric Pulse” was not chosen by chance. The “pulse” is the common point of intersection of two worlds: the silent, clean pulse of an electric motor and the rhythmic pulse of the music and the sports effort, the energy that moves people forward.

The guests lived a complete premium experience: espresso with roasted coffee in beans BUONDI CRAFT from the Miele coffee machines, Alpha Estate wines in the Miele wine conditioners, the Miele Outdoor Kitchen and the custom-made kitchen island of Gruppo Cucine, the new washing machine WQ 1000 WPS Nova Edition of Miele with the revolutionary drum InfinityCare, the lounge JYSK, the electric NIO Firefly, the innovative AI Mirror of Solgar, the Merino series of Icebreaker, the iconic duffel bags of Napapijri, signature Patrón cocktails, collectible items of Trace ’n Chase, the corner of Nexion Hellas with Hyperice and audio products Marshall through Objects We Love, and jewelry PETROS TASOULIS JEWELLERY EST.1970.

Road races with a view of the Messinian landscape

On Sunday, May 10, the Messinia Challenge peaked with the established routes:
  • Half Marathon 21.1km powered by The North Face
  • 10km race powered by MOTODYNAMICS Group with lead car the electric NIO Firefly.
  • 5km race powered by Miele in the wonderful Voidokilia.
  • Children's races 1km powered by VIKOS
  • 1km Run For All powered by MOTODYNAMICS Group, with over 60 athletes with disabilities.
This year, the road races had a truly family and human aura: many participants of the 5km crossed the finish line along with their dogs, while in the children's 1km races of VIKOS, several parents covered the route pushing the stroller of their child, images that transformed the race into a celebration of life, open to all.

During the races, there were offered to the participants: Melissa Pasta Van with Mamatsita, natural mineral water VIKOS, coffee BUONDI CRAFT, information from Solgar, recovery tents Physio-Treat with Hyperice products, wellness shots Feeju, gifts to the finishers from The North Face, MOTODYNAMICS Group and Miele.

The entries in the road races broke every previous record of the event. The new era of the Messinia Challenge, after the rebranding from Navarino Challenge, put the bar very high and gave to the event character, depth and dynamic that few Greek sports tourism events have presented until today.

Message of life and social contribution

REA Clinic and Association ORAMA ELPIDAS: information and sampling check of volunteer bone marrow donors, for three days at the House of Events and at the running venue.

“To Save A Child”, over 5,000€ already collected

In the charitable auctions of memorabilia of the initiative “To Save A Child”, YAMAHA, member of the MOTODYNAMICS Group, offered NEO’s Dual Battery Scooter, Trace ’n Chase collectible sports items with signatures of global stars, and Napapijri a work of art of the graffiti artist Same84 — inspired by the logo of Messinia Challenge and with a central message of inclusion, capturing Nasos Ghavelas and Antigoni Ntrismpioti running side-by-side. From the sale of the electric YAMAHA and the items of Trace ’n Chase there have already been collected over 5,000€, an amount that will be strengthened further from the auction of the remaining items.

The value of volunteering

Volunteers from the University of Piraeus, Deree – The American College of Greece, the team Humanity Greece, the Hellenic Rescue Team – Messinia Branch, the Clinic City Hospital, as well as the collaborating doctors and rescuers, contributed decisively to the safe conduct of the event.

The path towards a greener and sustainable running future

The last years, at Messinia Challenge we have taken a series of measures, both in our everyday life and during the same implementation of the event, with the aim of reducing our footprint. We are moving towards the right direction, however we still work in many fields, so that we map what more we can do and how we will face the different challenges to become an even greener and sustainable running race.

We want to inspire other running events and activate more organizers, so that they become more sustainable. We also want to inspire and mobilize the runners, the spectators, the partners, our suppliers and all those who participate in the organization, to make better choices and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) until 2030.

We need the support of the Messinia Challenge: runners, spectators, volunteers, officials, partners and suppliers.

Methana

The peninsula of Méthana with its two steep volcanic slopes is actually a volcano that emerged from the sea! Welcome the opportunity to explore a stunning volcanic landscape with dense vegetation, coastal villages and diverse flora and fauna. The establishment of the spa complex in 1870 made it a popular spa town attracting mainly senior citizens from many European countries.

Follow a fascinating route to the fishing village of Agios Geórgios and on to the Baths of Pausanias, one of the peninsula’s hot springs, or follow the footsteps of the ancient historian Pausanias to the ancient city of Méthana.

In the village of Paleókastro stand the remains of the classical walls and gates of an acropolis, the rest of which fell into the sea due to a volcanic eruption.

The peninsula boasts approximately 32 volcanoes. Climbing to the largest crater is a truly challenging experience. Start from Kaméni Hóra and follow the path on a 25-minute climb to the lip of the volcano. Step on now solid red lava flows and take in views of a different world of savage black, red and green crags and sharp abysses… Last but not least, soak up the atmosphere along the island’s volcanic beaches (Nissaki Ayion Anaryiron, Limniónas and Vathý).

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) - E-learning Programme of its Center of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning addresses the international public through the universal language of culture. Perceived as an inherent part of their mission, they have set out an extrovert effort to introduce fascinating facets of Greece to the world. And this, by deploying the distinguishable and longstanding features of its cultural heritage, as well as via the contemporary identity shaped in country’s everyday life.

YouGoCulture, an initiative of the E-Learning Programme of the NKUA, constitutes an innovative and unique attempt to promote Greek culture in an extrovert manner and on two levels: on the one hand it shall showcase the country's priceless cultural heritage and on the other, familiarize the international public with aspects of the Greek society of today.

Balancing learning and entertainment in a promising and technologically updated way, this interactive online platform offers unique and individualized experiences regarding Greece's great history and the uniqueness of the cultural flourishing of its regions (including the broader south-eastern Mediterranean).

YouGoCulture offers exceptional Virtual Tours of certain “sites” of the longstanding culture of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. YouGoCulture is an integrated environment of images and information, but also of consolidated popular knowledge. The platform records points of global interest and offers access to them by familiarizing the world with the achievements of civilizations that constituted the cradle of the evolution and the values of the modern world as we know it.

Each destination is presented on the basis of its important cultural heritage (the “Myth”) and its contemporary life (the “Experience”). Points of Interest (POIs) are identified, having as reference marks the archaeological sites and other spots of cultural significance, based on the rationale of consolidated documentation of each destination, providing the history and the contemporary life, through the production of original audiovisual material, accompanied by informative text.

The vision of the people behind this project started as the need to utilize the competitive advantages of the Greek environment, while it was founded upon the experience and high level of specialization of the academic staff of the UoA, and hopefully of others, who are also embracing the effort.

The Greek Ministry of Culture is expected to submit the final nomination file for the inscription of the island of Spinalonga on the UNESCO World Heritage List, at the end of the month.

“It will be Crete’s first monument to be included on the World Heritage List of UNESCO,” Culture Ministry Secretary General Maria Andreadaki-Vlazaki said.

After the Palace of Knossos, Spinalonga is the most visited archaeological site in Crete and the 6th in Greece. The small islet attracts countless visitors every year due to its unique architecture and historical importance. Spinalonga features a well-preserved 16th century Venetian defense fortification.

The Region of Crete has managed to secure 900,000 euros in EU funding in order to complete the 3rd phase of restoration which includes maintenance works on its fortification and buildings.

It is worth noting that from the early 20th century up until 1957, Spinalonga was used as a leper colony, while the last inhabitant left the island in 1962. The tiny island became famous as the setting of ‘The Island’ a best-selling novel by Victoria Hislop.
