Young Greeks Send Their Support To California Wildfire Victims
Following the dreadful wildfires in Mati, Neos Voutzas, and Kokkino Limanaki that killed more than 90 people last summer, a group of people – which wants to be called ‘the young people of Mati’– decided to send a message of support to the wildfire victims in California.
In an act of solidarity, the group took a series of black and white photos with the burnt-down Mati landscape in the background. Despite the destruction depicted on the photos, and the devastation the group experienced last summer, their message, is in fact, very compassionate: ‘we feel you California.” The group also wrote a moving poem for the victims of the California fires, called, "I Feel You California!."

Greek-Australian Professor Discovers An Unmapped Area In The Human Brain
A world-renowned Greek-Australian neuroscientist has discovered a new, previously unmapped area in the human brain. Professor George Paxinos, a researcher at the Neuroscience Research Australia-NeuRA, suspected the existence of this area in the human brain for the past 30 years, however today’s better detection and imaging methods made it possible for him to finally prove its existence.
Named the ‘Endorestiform Nucleus’, this part of the brain is located in the lower cerebellum section, an area that combines sensory and kinetic information to correct posture, balance, and fine motor skills.
"There is nothing more enjoyable for a neuroscientist than finding a previously unknown area of the human brain. What is important is that this area is absent in monkeys and other animals. There must be some things that are unique to the human brain beyond its larger size, and this area is probably one of them," Paxinos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).
"What remains to be done is to determine the function of this newly discovered brain region. Now that it has been mapped, it will be possible for it to be studied by the wider research community," he added.

Corfu Voted As The Best Filming Location In Europe
The Greek island of Corfu won the 2018 European Film Location Award, the European Film Commission Network (EUFCN) announced yesterday. Corfu was chosen among 12 European locations as the best filming location of 2018, in recognition of its key role in the filming of the TV series The Durrells.
The 2018 European Film Location Award competition was organized by the EUFCN, in collaboration with Cineuropa. The European Film Commissions Network numbers 90 members from 30 countries and its objective is to promote European audio-visual production sites. Last month, the general public had the opportunity to vote for their favorite location, through the Cineuropa website.
The award was picked up by Venia Vergou, the director of the Hellenic Film Commission and coordinator Stavroula Geronimaki, who both work hard to promote Corfu's cinematic appeal to the rest of the world.
“The 2018 Best European Film Location Award is very rewarding, as it communicates to the entire world how unique Greek locations are. They have inspired writers, directors and producers for many years. This prize underlines the systematic work of the Hellenic Film Commission in promoting Greek locations. It also showcases the impact that cultural heritage and monuments have on audiovisual works – the Old Town of Corfu island, which contributed to the success of the TV series The Durrells, is one of the many UNESCO-protected monuments in Greece,” said Vergou.
Well done Corfu!

Greek Relic Among The Most Compelling Archaeological Finds Of The Year
The editors of ARCHAEOLOGY, the publication of the Archaeological Institute of America, revealed the 10 most compelling archaeological finds of the year. Among them is a Greek relic discovered near Ancient Olympia.
When an inscribed brick was discovered in a village near the sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia, it appeared to be nothing special. It was with great surprise that researchers eventually discovered that it contains an excerpt from Homer’s Odyssey, the epic poem that describes Odysseus’ 10-year journey following the Trojan War.
Scientists have dated the newly discovered excerpt back to the third century A.D. at the latest and believe it is likely the oldest inscribed section of the Odyssey ever to be found in Greece.
The inscription consists of the first 13 verses of the poem’s 14th book, in which Odysseus finally returns home to Ithaca. “I think the brick was inscribed at some point, and later it was used for construction,” says Erofili-Iris Kolia, director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia.
