Walking In Athens With Constantine Cavafy
Renowned Greek poet Constantine Cavafy was born in Alexandria, Egypt, on 29 April, 1863. A cosmopolitan by birth, Cavafy travelled for the first time to Greece in the summer of 1901, accompanied by his brother Alexandros. His stay in Athens constitutes the topic of a new book entitled Walking in Athens with Constantine Cavafy.
Wandering through Athens with Cavafy is a fascinating experience. Readers will have the chance to discover that, despite the fact that it’s been over a century ago and with dramatic changes have taken place in the capital, the city centre has preserved the broad outline of its physiognomy. The urban grid, shaped like a large symmetrical triangle and dating from the time of King Otto (mid 19th century), is still the city’s most obvious trait, while the large public buildings that remain attractions adorning the city would have also been seen by Cavafy at the time.
“Cavafy travelled for the first time in Greece in the summer of 1901 during a period of leave from his job. The poet was 38 years old and was accompanied by his brother Alexandros. Travelling to Athens with Cavafy is a fascinating experience.”

The Dalliance House Restaurant In Kifisia
The Dalliance House Restaurant in Kifisia is in a neoclassical building of 1890 and was originally used as a bourgeois house. The all-day bar restaurant that is now in operation, has iron constructions and plasterboards largely covering the treasure of memories which were trapped underneath and that had to be totally dismantled. Today, three generations later, The Dalliance House in Kifissia, houses the space created by Lefteris Bakopoulos and his colleagues, so we can enjoy it by morning, noon, or evening.
In the main entrance, guests have a general view of the site as it evolves 180 degrees, revealing from left to right, the bar, the corridor leading to the second floor of the building and the petrol blue room. On the left side of the main entrance lies the space of the bar. The playful lights of the bar have lots of personality!
The elements that characterize The Dalliance House are intimate, comfort, and a tendency to create a space where privacy and sociability are combined. It plays on the dichotomy that takes place between the space and its world.

Basic Greek For Traveling
Whether you’re traveling through Greece or have recently moved, it’s important to know a few Greek phrases, especially when it comes to saying ‘Hello’ or ‘thank you!’ Why Athens has put a list together of useful phrases for tourists (or expats) to use while you’re in Greece, along with spelling and pronunciation!
Basic Greek Phrases for Tourists
The Greek language is not an easy one to learn or pronounce. We’ve put together a quick guide with audio clips to help you along. Learning to say a few words like ‘hello’, ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ is always a nice gesture when travelling anywhere in the world and the Greeks do appreciate the effort, however good or bad the attempt.
General Rules for Greetings
You would say ‘kalimera’ (good morning) up until 12:00pm, from here onwards ‘yia sas’ (hello) will be the standard greeting. You will hear ‘kalispera’ (good afternoon/evening) from late afternoon right through to the end of the day. If you are leaving a restaurant or passing by the hotel reception desk to walk back to your room, you would say ‘kalinihta’ (good night).

Greek Architecture Firm Designs World’s First U-Shaped Skyscraper For NYC
Oiio Studio, founded by Ioannis Oikonomou, is a Greek architecture firm based in both New York and Athens. It has sparked global interest with their state-of-the-art design of the Big Bend, the world’s first U-shaped skyscraper.
If and when it will be built, it will span over 4,000 feet long which is almost twice as long as Burj Khalifa, standing at 2,722 feet tall. The Big Bend could be the world’s longest continual building and would forever change the architectural landscape of New York.
Oiio Studio also noted the challenges with the proposed project, one of the biggest being the curvature of the building and how an elevator would function to allow people transportation to the top floors.

Cafes Amidst The Athenian Gardens
Finding a greenspace in Athens is harder than it looks, but thankfully, Culinary Backstreets searched for us and found a few delightful garden cafes, perfect for a coffee, tea, or snack.
Just behind Parliament lies the Ethnikos Kipos, or National Gardens, the indisputable green heart of the city. The gardens’ café sits at the Irodou Attikou entrance, with retro green tables arrayed symmetrically in the relaxing shade of the alleyway.
The Black Duck Garden, located on Klauthmonos square between Omonia and Syntagma, is housed in one of the city’s oldest surviving neoclassical buildings. Constructed in 1833, it was the temporary palace of King Otto and Queen Amalia. It’s an ideal getaway for a quiet coffee or a glass of wine paired with a Greek cheese platter.
Hidden behind high walls, away from the noise of the busy touristy area of Anafiotika in Plaka, the nonprofit Alumni Association of the School of Fine Arts (Enosi Ptichiouchon Scholi Kalon Technon), with its old marble statues and lovely details, has the artiest green courtyard in the city. The old-fashioned coffee-shop tables and the built-in benches under the tall, leafy trees contribute to a warm, convivial atmosphere.

Athens Converts More Streets Into Pedestrian-Only Zones
As of May 2017, residents and visitors of Athens will find two more pedestrianized streets in the city center. Cars will no longer be able to turn left from Voreos Street to Karoris and Agathonos streets. It is reminded that vehicles are allowed to enter Athinas Street only from the streets of Mitropoleos, Karagiorgis and Sofokleous.
The streets Agathonos and Karoris (up to Voreou Street) have been pedestrianized as part of the municipality’s program to restore the ‘commercial triangle of Athens.’ The sides of the this triangle are the three main squares of the city: Omonia, Syntagma and Monastiraki.
