If you're stopping in Athens before or after a Greek island escape, you may be wondering whether August is a good time to visit the Greek capital. You've probably heard the saying that Athens empties out in August. The good news? It's true… but perhaps not in the way you think.

Here's everything you can expect from Athens during the hottest month of the year – and why it might just become your favourite time to explore the city.

August is traditionally the holiday month for Greeks. Around the middle of the month, many Athenians head to the islands or their family villages to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption on 15 August, one of the most important dates in the Greek Orthodox calendar, honouring the Virgin Mary.

As a result, you'll notice a more relaxed rhythm across the city. Some neighbourhood cafés, independent shops and family-run businesses close for their annual holidays, while public transport may operate less frequently or on reduced routes.

Don't imagine deserted streets.

Athens remains one of Europe's busiest summer destinations, with visitors from around the world keeping the historic centre buzzing. Hotels, major museums, archaeological sites, guided tours, transport services and most restaurants in tourist areas continue to operate as usual. It's always worth calling ahead before visiting smaller venues, but the city's biggest attractions remain very much open for business.

The Assumption holiday creates one of Greece's busiest travel periods, with ferries, domestic flights and roads leading in and out of Athens becoming particularly congested. Delays are common, so allow extra time if you're travelling during this period.

If you're arriving in Athens around the holiday, booking your airport or port transfer in advance is highly recommended. Last-minute taxi fares — particularly from the Port of Piraeus — can be considerably higher during this peak travel period.

So, is August a good time to visit Athens? Absolutely!
