The 10 Best Bars In The Psirri District
This old district in the heart of Athens, Greece near Monastiraki, has been enjoying a new breath of fresh air. Psirri is considered the low-key area to enjoy a night with friends! Here are a few of The Culture Trip’s favorite bars.
Barrett
Industrial decor, great music, a relaxed vibe, and an array of great drinks and cocktails is what you get in Barrett. This newcomer in Psirri is a great place for late-morning coffee and homemade sweets or for after-work drinks with friends. Things get serious at night with various guest DJ sets exploring jazz, soul, and indie rock tunes. All in all, Barrett is the cool hangout spot we were all looking for in the capital city.
Address: Protogenous 11
Cantina Social
With its resolutely alternative vibe, and its vast array of Russian beers, Cantina Social is a small joint with a minimalist interior, tasty cocktails, and a cozy atmosphere. The bar plays mostly indie music but will spontaneously revisit dance, Latin, and reggae hits. Most nights, black-and-white movies are projected onto the surrounding apartment buildings. The bar also hosts several exhibitions. If you want to give your nights out some edge, you know where to go.
Address: 6 Leokoriou
Concierge Athens Café
This new space is an all-day cafe/bar offering breakfast, lunch, and brunch options as well as extensive drink options at night. These include straight alcohols, cool cocktails, beers, and wine. The cafe is located on the ground floor of the Concierge Athens, which rents apartments and studios for long and short stays in the city. With its large doors always open, there is no doubt the Concierge Athens Café is a friendly and welcoming bar where residents and clients alike feel at home. Grab your favorite book and spend the afternoon there.

Combining Work And Tourism In Thessaloniki
This is an interview with Aphrodite Bouikidis, the founder of WorkFromSKG, an innovative campaign supporting work, entertainment, and networking in Thessaloniki. The interview is conducted by Michael Kiloumis.
M.K.: Aphrodite, in your own words how would you describe WorkFromSKG to someone not familiar with it?
A.B.: The city of Thessaloniki is also known as SKG by its airport code. Work From Thessaloniki, or WorkFromSKG, is about Thessaloniki as a place that is great for anyone that wants to mix tourism with work. The initiative is a network of local partners that are ready to welcome people who are visiting the city, and working remotely. These partners provide information about the city, available co-work spaces, people to meet, entertainment, local travel and even bike sharing on the campaign website.
M.K.: Can you tell us about the lifestyle of Thessaloniki residents?
A.B.: Thessaloniki has a friendly and lively population. It is the largest student town in Greece, so there are a lot of young people, adding vibrancy to the café culture, nightlife, and arts and music scene. People like being outside, meeting over coffee and meals, or spending time out in public spaces. The city was recognized as “A capital of cheap eats” by The New York Times in its 52 Places to Go in 2016, and according to National Geographic, it has more cafes per capita than any other European city.
The Waterfront is always full of people walking, running, biking, strolling. There are night half marathons, Santa Runs, and all kinds of sports, music and street arts festivals going on around the city, bringing international visitors to the mix.
M.K.: What someone should expect working in Thessaloniki?
A.B.: Lots of opportunities to meet people, and a local ecosystem of professionals, freelancers, and startups or organizations who are eager to meet and collaborate with fellow professionals. A city that feels like a campus – it is a 30 minute walk to cross the entire city center – with opportunities to enjoy culture, arts, and great beaches and nature within an hour’s drive of the city.

The Museum Without A Home - An Exhibition Of Hospitality
Greece is a country renowned for its contribution to philosophy, democracy and civilization in general. Everyday people across Greece become examples of kindness, humanity and solidarity, offering items to people who have nothing.
Within this framework, Amnesty International in Greece and Oxfam have created The Museum Without A Home wanting to thank Greeks for offering pieces of their lives, both metaphorically and literally, to this cause.
The Museum Without A Home is quite different from the ordinary, since it neither has a specific location nor opening hours, while the objects it displays are not works of art but things that the Greeks offered to people who needed protection and support and that played an important role in their everyday lives.
Look around for the exhibits throughout the city. You’ll find them at particular Public Transport modes (tube, trams and over ground coaches) as well as at the Acropolis Museum, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of School Life and Education and the Frissiras Museum. Visit them and listen to their stories; maybe you can identify with one of those!

Greece Remains The Leading Ship-Owning Country
Greek shipowners have retained their role as top players in world shipping according to a special review recently published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Despite the challenges faced by the Hellenic ship owning community, Greece has continued to strengthen its position as the largest ship owning nation in recent years.
Addressing an event marking the 100th anniversary of the Union of Greek Shipowners in Athens this November 2016, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, noted that while Greece’s population is only 0.15 per cent of the world population, Greeks control 25 per cent of the world’s total merchant fleet. These numbers are of huge significance not only for the Greek but for the European economy as well, in terms of competitiveness.
Traditionally, shipping gives an important boost to the Greek economy, with opportunities to generate income and employmentas well as promote foreign trade. One prominent trend giving hope and optimism for the future is the high quality of maritime studies in Greece, in combination with the potential of Greek shipping and the high standard of Greek shipping personnell.
