One of the most talented musicians of our time, Nigle Kennedy, will give an unforgetable performance for his first time in Greece at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

The world famous violin player will unconventionally play a number of J.S. Bach works and Jazz versions of George Gershwin.

Having performed with stars like Paul McCartney and Robert Plant, but also being the violin player with the most record sales in the history of music, makes his concert at the ancient theatre a once in a lifetime oppurtunity!

Carmen ~ Greek National Opera

Symbolizing love and liberty, the most popular opera in the French repertoire is being brought back to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus Theater by the GNO, directed by the famous British director, Steven Langridge, currently Artistic Director of the Gothenburg Opera.

Langridge’s Carmen was first staged at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus Theater in 2016 and is a contemporary, pointed, timely version set in a Europe of closed borders and poverty. Working with Giorgos Souglidis who designed the impressive sets and costumes, Giuseppe di Iorio who created the otherworldly lighting and Thomas Bergman who devised the ethereal video projections, Langridge has created a modern but also timeless setting for Carmen’s tale; “a tale about borders and poverty, freedom and slavery. A tale about today,” as the director himself put it.

One of the most iconic operas around, Carmen continues to provoke even today, just like when it first saw the light of day 142 years ago. An unconventional storyline, expressed through the then equally unconventional, but now extremely popular, music of Georges Bizet. The heroine of the piece defends her freedom and right to choose her lovers, not for them to choose her. She is a threat to male-dominated, patrrchal societies. Her choices threaten their very foundations. The only solution: get rid of her. The love-struck, ‘betrayed’ Don José takes on the task.

In French with English and Greek surtitles.

The Collector, 1965 by William Wyler

Tribute «Classics Illustrated: Reading on the big screen» in collaboration with the British Council.  A young and lonely man (Terence Stamp) has kidnapped a student of fine arts (Samantha Eggar) aiming to win her love, even through violence if necessary. Twice awarded with an Oscar, one of the top creators of Hollywood’s golden era, William Wyler left aside the social concerns found in John Fowles’ book and focused on the coexistence of the two main characters forming an unusual (and unique in its kind) erotic film, through the conflict of different worldviews.

Starring: Terence Stamp, Samantha Eggar, Mona Washbourne
Duration: 119’
Starting Time: 21:00

Friday , August 24th / Dionysiou Areopagitou Pedestrian Precinct
The Long Day Closes, 1992 by Terence Davies

Tribute «Classics Illustrated: Reading on the big screen» in collaboration with the British Council. Four years after the artistic triumph of his first feature film «Distant Voices, Still Lives» (1988), the great Terence Davies returns again in the past and his hometown: in Liverpool – 1956, in the house he grew up, in the arms of his beloved mother, in the days where the whole world seemed to begin at his family home’s doorstep and finish at the end of the road.

Starring: Leigh McCormack, Marjorie Yates, Anthony Watson, Nicholas Lamont
Duration: 85’
Starting Time: 21:00

Wednesday, August 29th / Numismatic Museum Garden
Lord of the Flies, 1963 by Peter Brook

Tribute «Classics Illustrated: Reading on the big screen» in collaboration with the British Council. One day, out of the blue, war breaks out and a bunch of British schoolchildren find refuge in an exotic island in the middle of nowhere. All alone and unable to contact the outside world, the boys try to organize a society from scratch, despite the constant disputes that threaten the already fragile new circumstance. If hope for a better world effectively lies within the children, this same hope sinks in the most dramatic way in the sea of the Cold-War pessimism which surrounds the island of the «Lord of the Flies» and this masterful adaptation from William Golding’s legendary novel.

Starring: James Aubrey, Tom Chapin, Hugh Edwards
Duration: 92’
Starting Time: 21:00

«Athens 2018 World Book Capital»
The screenings of the 8th Athens International Film Festival that express literary interest are integrated in the «Athens 2018 World Book Capital» framework, an international distinction received by the Athens municipality and our town from UNESCO which lasts for a year, from April the 23rd 2018 until April the 22nd 2019.

In the context of their new project, Oh Europa, two dynamic performance artists from Bristol, U.K., who work together under the name Action Hero, are travelling over 30,000km across Europe in a motorhome, recording songs of love, heartbreak, loss and desire, sung by the people they meet.

After stopping in the U.K., Germany, France, Belgium and Hungary, they will arrive at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. From 22 to 26/08, they invite us to go into their motorhome and sing a love song; it can be any type of love song – modern or traditional, about falling in love or falling out of love, break-ups or make-ups. All voices are welcome! You can sing solo, or with friends; bring the lyrics along, or find them on your mobile.

In this ever-evolving archive, Action Hero creatively fuse installation and performance, while creating a love-song saga, in an audio broadcast from the literal edges of the continent – a hopeful, reparative act, and an attempt to build connections. Detached from political sound bites, diplomacy, or art-speak, the messages instead speak in song about who we are and how we feel, straight from the heart.

Their archive, constantly enriched with love songs in all European languages, will broadcast 24/7 by beacons placed by the artists throughout the continent, on its literal edges, as well as on borders, hinterlands and divides, both political and historical, natural and geographical, imagined and real. If you want to listen to the broadcast, you can navigate to the beacon nearest you, including the one at SNFCC of course, using the Oh Europa app, a free download for IoS and Android.
Oh Europa invites us to re-imagine the terrains of Europe - psychic, emotional, political and physical, offering an opportunity to re-orientate and re-imagine our relationships with each other and with the space we share.

Who is Action Hero
Gemma Paintin and James Stenhouse share an interdisciplinary performance practice together under the name Action Hero. Since 2005, they have created performances spanning theatre, live art, installation, multi media and site-specific practice, which have toured to nearly 30 countries across 5 continents.

Their ongoing interests lie in the iconography of popular culture and its use; both as a weapon and as a shared cultural memory. Action Hero’s work is always experimenting with form, and as a result their work expands across multiple creative practices. Although they work primarily with live performance, they regularly work with processes and mediums with which they are unfamiliar, adopting a radical DIY approach which often sees them navigating solo through new technical and creative territories.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Two Diverse Programs Over Seven Performances Featuring Music by Jazz Legends Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington.

Seven Dynamic Works Including International Debut of Ailey Dancer Jamar Roberts’ Members Don’t Get Weary and Alvin Ailey’s Must-See American Masterpiece Revelations.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, recognized by U.S. Congress as “a vital cultural ambassador to the world,” returns to Megaron, The Athens Concert Hall to perform two diverse programs from September 11-15, 2018. After a 21-city North American Tour hitting major theaters from coast-to-coast, Artistic Director Robert Battle leads the Company into its 60th anniversary year with a month-long international tour beginning with the Company’s 10th visit to Greece. Audiences in Athens can experience the unparalleled artistry of Ailey’s 32 renowned dancers, as they perform an expansive repertory highlighting the marriage between modern dance and jazz – America’s two original art forms. Each performance closes with Alvin Ailey’s must-see American masterpiece Revelations.

The engagement opens on Tuesday, September 11 at 9pm with Program A, featuring Billy Wilson’s The Winter in Lisbon, a rhythmic and colorful celebration of the great Dizzy Gillespie. Ailey star Jamar Roberts will internationally debut his blues-inspired work Members Don’t Get Weary – his first world premiere for the Company, which he joined in 2002. Set the powerful music of the legendary jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane 50 years after his death, the work is “a response to the current social landscape in America” and aims to allow the audience to momentarily transcend their own personal blues. The program also includes Robert Battle’s tour-de-force duet Ella, intricately paired with Ella Fitzgerald’s scatting in her song “Airmail Special.” Program A repeats on Wednesday, September 12 at 9pm, Friday, September 14 at 9pm, and Saturday, September 15 at 9pm.

Program B takes the stage on Wednesday, September 12 at 4:30pm with a performance of founder Alvin Ailey’s 1975 classic Night Creature, a dazzling ballet set to music by jazz legend Duke Ellington; Robert Battle’s gripping solo In/Side, set to soul-stirring music by Nina Simone; and beloved choreographer Ronald K. Brown’s spiritually charged Four Corners. Program B repeats on Thursday, September 13 at 9pm and Saturday, September 15 at 4:30pm.

To close each performance, the incomparable Ailey dancers will perform Alvin Ailey’s must-see American masterpiece, Revelations, which is a tribute to his African American heritage and a testament to his genius. Seen my more people than any other modern dance work since its debut in 1960, Revelations has moved audiences around the world through its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music, evoking timeless themes of determination, hope, and transcendence.
