Education for all, synergies that give hope for our future and young students who dream of a bright and happy world were celebrated on Thursday, June 13, 2019. The Completion Ceremony of the Youth-to-Youth Educational & Social Integration Programs of the 2018-2019 academic year took place at ACS Athens campus in a warm and inspiring atmosphere.

The Youth-to-Youth Programs are delivered by ACS Athens to unaccompanied refugee minors in collaboration with The HOME Project Organization, with the generous support of the Shapiro Foundation and IKEA Foundation. This academic year is the third year that the part-time and full-time Youth-to-Youth Programs are running, proving in action how educational institutions have the power to respond to the deep problems of today’s world and find reliable partners to do so.

For all participating students and faculty members, this event was a celebration of a year full of knowledge and friendships, a touching celebration of life moving forward. The students shared their experiences from being a part of the Youth-to-Youth programs, either as students or as volunteer teachers, both sides expressing the same thought: “we learned from each other, we learned from each other’s culture and history, we are friends for life.”

Performing dances, singing and smiling, the students shared their talents, dreams, and future aspirations together with their dedication to keeping up their hard work for their next steps in education.

The Director of Youth-to-Youth Educational and Social Integration Programs and Academy Vice Principal, Ms. Julia Tokatlidou hosted the ceremony and proudly introduced the exceptional young participants of the program, some of whom have started only a few months ago but are already part of the ACS Athens family.

The Youth-to-Youth Programs will continue making an impact and will keep growing. For the academic year 2019-2020, the Shapiro Foundation has granted 18 full-time scholarships in ACS Athens for the HOME Project children, securing the opportunity to continue their studies at a leading educational institution

The Greek "panigiri" is a traditional festival that serves as a cornerstone of cultural and religious life in Greece. These vibrant events are deeply rooted in the Orthodox Christian faith, often held to honor the feast days of saints, but they also blend ancient customs with modern festivities. The word "panigiri" itself derives from "pan" (all) and "agora" (gathering), embodying the communal spirit that defines these celebrations.

What is a Panigiri?

A panigiri is much more than just a festival; it is a community gathering that encompasses religious rituals, music, dance, food, and social bonding. Typically hosted by villages or towns, these festivals are often centered around a church or chapel dedicated to a saint. The celebration usually begins with a religious service, followed by communal feasting, traditional music and dancing, and various local customs that have been passed down through generations.

Key Elements of a Panigiri

  • Religious Ceremonies: The day usually starts with a church service or a procession where the icon of the saint is paraded through the village streets. This is a moment of profound spiritual significance, bringing the community together in prayer and reverence.
  • Music & Dance: Traditional Greek music, often featuring instruments like the bouzouki and the lyra, plays a central role. Dance is equally important, with people of all ages joining in dances such as the syrtaki and kalamatianos, which often last until the early hours of the morning.
  • Food & Drink: No panigiri is complete without an abundance of local delicacies. Souvlaki, grilled meats, fresh salads, and pastries are common, accompanied by local wines, ouzo, or raki.
  • Games & Activities: Depending on the region, there might be various traditional games and activities, including tug-of-war, sack races, and even animal contests in some rural areas.
Famous Panigiria in August

August is a significant month for panigiria in Greece, largely due to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 15th, one of the most important religious holidays in the country. Here are some of the most renowned panigiria held in August:

Tinos: The island of Tinos hosts one of the most famous panigiria on August 15th. The Church of Panagia Evangelistria becomes the focal point for thousands of pilgrims who arrive to pay their respects, seek blessings, and participate in the grand celebrations.

Ikaria: Known for its exuberant festivals, Ikaria's panigiria are legendary. The panigiri in the village of Christos Raches on August 6th (Transfiguration of the Savior) and August 15th are particularly notable for their lively atmosphere, featuring traditional Ikarian music, dance, and feasts that go on until dawn.

Paros: The island of Paros celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with a grand panigiri in the town of Parikia. The Church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani (Our Lady of the Hundred Doors) becomes the center of festivities, including processions, fireworks, and traditional music and dance.

Nisyros: This small volcanic island hosts a unique panigiri on August 15th at the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani. The celebration includes a blend of religious devotion, local music, dance, and feasting, attracting visitors from nearby islands and beyond.

Sifnos: On August 14th, the village of Apollonia on Sifnos holds a vibrant panigiri to honor the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. The festivities include a litany, traditional music, and dances that reflect the island’s rich cultural heritage.

The Greek panigiri is a testament to the enduring cultural and religious traditions that continue to thrive in Greece.

These festivals are a celebration of community, faith, and heritage, offering a unique glimpse into the heart and soul of Greek life. Whether it's the solemnity of the religious ceremonies, the joy of the communal dances, or the flavors of the local cuisine, panigiria in August provide an unforgettable experience that draws people together in a shared celebration of life and tradition.

How To Be Assertive Calmly & With Kindness

Have there been times you had to force yourself to do something just so you wouldn’t upset your mom or your best friend? How many times have you caught yourself yelling at your kid just because you wouldn’t know how to set your boundaries with love? How many times has your partner told you to stop complaining or whining while the only thing you were trying to say was that you felt uncomfortable or hurt or not respected? More than once, I bet!

Setting our boundaries is something most of us haven’t learned to do. “I wish I could but I can’t say no, there’s no way” is an argument I’ve heard many of my clients say. When I ask them why they answer that the idea alone makes them feel unkind, unhelpful, disrespectful and even arrogant at times. They also believe that if they say “no” there’s a high possibility the other person won’t like them anymore so they’ll be left alone. So they continue to be unhappy and to be taken for granted.

There is an explanation of course. And that is because as children we all wanted to be liked and loved so we would do whatever it would take to please our parents, our relatives, our friends. So even though we’re grownups now we still behave like the little child we were years ago.

And then I tell my clients the good news: “You don’t have to keep on behaving like this any longer and that is ok.” “But how? I don’t have the courage, I feel guilty,” is a typical response I get. Let’s see how.

Saying “no” calmly and with decisiveness is not a talent but something we can all learn. It takes conscious practice and extra time on your part but you’ll be amazed at the results. You can learn to recognize and express what you want and what you don’t want. You can learn to be both assertive and kind.

Here are some questions that may serve as your initial guide:

  • What are your personal values?
  • In what ways can you respect yourself so that others will respect you?
  • What phrases can you use to tell people what you do want instead of what you don’t want?
  • How can you express anger in more appropriate ways?
  • What are you grateful for?
Once you learn to communicate in a different way you will be able to set your limits with confidence, respect and love towards yourself.

In a contemporary landscape dominated by screens and inundated with digital diversions, instilling in our children the significance of reading holds more weight than ever before. Beyond the mere acquisition of information or the enjoyment of a captivating narrative, reading stands as a foundational pillar for cognitive growth, emotional acumen, and social interaction. As parents, it becomes imperative to grasp the psychological dynamics of reading and its profound influence on the evolving minds of our children.

Why is reading paramount?

Cognitive development emerges as a paramount aspect of growth, laying the groundwork for future learning and problem-solving abilities. Through the act of reading, various regions of the brain are stimulated, bolstering language proficiency, comprehension, and critical thinking capacities. As children immerse themselves in literary worlds, their imaginations soar, nurturing creativity and abstract reasoning. By regularly delving into books, they fortify cognitive processes, enhancing memory retention and the capacity for information assimilation, which is crucial for academic achievements both in school and beyond.

Moreover, reading cultivates empathy by offering children the opportunity to inhabit the perspectives of diverse characters, vicariously experiencing the world through their eyes. As they traverse the pages of a book, encountering individuals from varied backgrounds and cultures, they foster a deeper appreciation for human emotions and experiences. This empathic insight not only enriches their interpersonal connections but also fosters compassion and tolerance, contributing to the cultivation of an inclusive society.

Furthermore, reading plays a pivotal role in shaping social conduct and moral discernment. Through literature, children are prompted to confront moral quandaries and societal dilemmas, thereby honing critical reflection and ethical deliberation. By grappling with complex issues and contemplating the repercussions of characters' actions, they develop a moral compass and ethical decision-making prowess essential for navigating adulthood.

Inculcating the value of reading

As parents, a myriad of strategies exist to instill in our children a passion for reading and harness its transformative potential. Firstly, we must lead by example, integrating reading into our daily routine, whether through shared bedtime stories or dedicated family reading sessions. Establishing a cozy reading nook at home, stocked with a diverse array of books tailored to the child's interests and reading level, can further encourage literary engagement.

Additionally, fostering dialogue about the books they peruse proves invaluable. By posing open-ended inquiries that stimulate critical thinking and introspection, such as "How do you suppose the character felt in that situation?" or "What alternative choices might have been made?" we encourage them to articulate their insights, fostering a deeper connection with the material and active participation in the literary realm.

Furthermore, infusing reading with elements of fun and interactivity enhances its appeal. Experimenting with various genres, exploring diverse storytelling techniques, and incorporating multimedia platforms like audiobooks or digital reading apps cater to individual preferences, fostering a genuine enjoyment of reading. Encouraging children to explore their passions through literature and providing avenues for them to share their discoveries with others further bolsters their enthusiasm for reading.

In conclusion, the endeavor of imparting the value of reading to our children transcends the mere transmission of knowledge. By prioritizing reading in our daily lives, engaging in meaningful discourse about literature, and fostering a nurturing environment conducive to reading at home, we equip our children with the tools and knowledge necessary to flourish in an ever-evolving world.

Makrinitsa: The Balcony Of Pelion

Known as the balcony of Pelion, Makrinitsa attracts people from all places and ages for summer and winter holidays. It is 16km away from the city of Volos. The village was built on the slope of the mountain where the lower points have an altitude of 350m and the higher 700m. The colour and style have been preserved through the years so the village maintains its original and traditional look. There are many old traditional houses, mansions and cobble-stoned paths for walking.

From here, the view is simply majestic. The entire city of Volos is right down below your feet, and it the perfect view to sit back and watch as you enjoy a drink.

If you walk to the back of the church of Agios Yiannis, you can see the frescos from 1910 that were painted by the artist Theofilos. In the "Tapali" mansion, which was built in 1844, you will find the museum for music and art folklore. The museum has a very impressive collection of household objects, tools, books, clothing, flags and guns. It is open daily from 10.00 until 17.00.

You can visit the interesting churches with many icons and frescos, like the church of Panagias (1767), Agios Athanasios (1792), Agios Nikoloas (1787) and Agios Georgios (1795).

At the village square is the church of Agios Yiannis Prothromos. On the side of this church is the famous old spring fountain with its sculptured lions heads. In the old days, the people used to say that this water made you immortal. The fountain was built in 1809.

During the summer, many festivals take place. In July are the celebrations of "Mays" and "Maithei", which have their roots with the ancient Greek God Dionysos, and they are based on the renaissance of life and nature. You can enjoy dance and music at these festivals.

In the village you will find restaurants, cafes, bars and tavernas. At the restaurant "Partheon", you can enjoy your meal or drink with a magnificent view of Volos.

At the Koukourava, which is actually a quarter of the village of Makrinitsa, you can see the medieval castle of Skotiniotis, old water mills and wild vegetation.

You can also visit the church of Agia Magthalini that dates from 1737. Inside you can enjoy the impressive icons and wall paintings. Makrinitsa is a village that you will never forget. It is one of the most beautiful and popular in all of Pelion.
