YouR Neighbour’S Son: How A Torturer Is Made

CineDoc and the Hellenic Film Academy present the historical documentary Your Neighbour’s Son (Din nabos søn) by Danish directors Jørgen Flindt Pedersen and Erik Stephensen, one of the earliest cinematic investigations into the mechanisms of torture during the Greek dictatorship.

Filmed shortly after the fall of the Junta, the documentary returns to the years 1967–1974, exploring not only the crimes of the regime but also how violence was organised and taught. Through testimonies from people who were tortured and former members of EAT-ESA, it examines how young conscripts were transformed into torturers.

Almost half a century after its first screening, the film remains a powerful historical document centred on a question that extends beyond the Greek experience: are people who torture born or made?

The film is part of “Those, Then.”, a thematic section curated by screenwriter and author Efthimis Filippou, within the Hellenic Film Academy’s CINEMA AGAIN screening series, ahead of the 39th European Film Awards in Athens in 2027.

In collaboration with Amnesty International Greece. A Q&A will follow with Andreas Apostolidis, director and author, and Neni Panourgia, Associate Professor at Columbia University.
