Tribute To Greek-Canadian Opera Legend Teresa Stratas
The Greek National Opera, in collaboration with the Embassy of Canada, pay tribute to the legendary Teresa Stratas, the Greek-Canadian soprano, who has enjoyed an immense international career. Stratas starred in 385 performances at the New York Metropolitan Opera, whereas in her 36-year-long career she undertook 41 different roles.

The daughter of Greek immigrants from Crete, Teresa Stratas started her stunning career in 1958, in Toronto-Canada, her birthplace, making her final onstage performance  at the Metropolitan Opera of New York in 1995. She performed in the most important opera houses of the world and with internationally acclaimed opera stars such as Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo.
Teresa Stratas has been honoured with numerous awards including two Grammy Awards (1981 and 1984), the Governor General’s Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement (2000) and was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2001.
As the recipient of the Opera News Award on April 20, 2015, Editor in Chief F. Paul Driscoll said: “Teresa Stratas is a singing actress whose uncompromising performances established an indelible standard in all the roles that she inhabited—from Alban Berg’s Lulu and Kurt Weill’s Jenny to Mimi in La Bohème and Nedda in Pagliacci.  But Teresa Stratas is more than an extraordinary artist: she is an extraordinary woman whose humanitarian work is an expression of her deep compassion and seemingly inexhaustible capacity for caring.”
She is considered one of the world's best opera singers of the 20th century, but also a legend of opera because her fairytale-like life and her philanthropic activity urged many people to compare her with the opera heroines she embodied in such a gripping manner.
Two major and internationally acclaimed Greek sopranos, Alexia Voulgaridou and Myrtò Papatanasiu, feature at the GNO's tribute, singing arias that bear the stamp of Stratas. In the framework of the first joint performance between the GNO and the Canadian Opera Company, the Canadian tenor Andrew Haji also appears with them. With the participation of the GNO Orchestra, under the musical direction of Elias Voudouris.
The event is made possible with support of the Embassy of Canada, the Canadian Opera Company and the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Eurobank, Eldorado Gold, Turkish airlines and INGLOT cosmetics.
