Greek Museums Nominated for Best European Museum

Greek Museums Nominated for Best European Museum
Two Greek Museums are nominated this year for the European Museum of the Year 2012 Award. The ceremony organized by the European Museum Forum Assembly will take place on May 16-19 in Portugal. Nikos Kazantzakis Museum on Crete and the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina are the two Greek representatives on the European list, nominated for this year’s award.

The European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) was established in 1977, under the auspices of the Council of Europe.

The EMYA Judging panel decides which European Museum shows “outstanding professional excellence and which demonstrates that it understands and fulfills the needs of its audiences.” Each Museum’s representative has to present their Museum’s purpose, as well as to answer questions addressed by the audience.

During the 35-year-long presence of EMYA, only one Greek institution has been awarded the prize, the Folk Art Museum in Nafplion (1981).

The rest of the competitors are: Museums of Croatia, Estonia, France, Germany (5), Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands (6), Norway, Portugal (3), Russia (4), Serbia, Slovenia, Spain (3), Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine and the UK (10).

The European Museum of the Year 2011 Prize was awarded to the French-Roman Museum of Tongeren, Belgium, while seven more received distinguished honors.
