2nd Place for Greek Studets at Space Tech Competition

2nd Place for Greek Studets at Space Tech Competition
High school students from different ESA (European Space Agency) Member States have completed the second European CanSat Competition at the Andoya Rocket Range in Norway. Fourteen teams participated in the competition, which took place April 23-26. The Greek team consisting of students of the 3rd Lyceum of Mytilini, Strati Myrivili, won second place.

A satellite - the Icaromenippus 3D - the students created with the help of their physics teacher Giorgos Kontellis, flew 1 kilometer above the Earth’s ground taking 3D photographs.

As noted by the competition’s judges, Icaromenippus 3D took all data without facing any abnormalities, while CanSats of the other teams were destroyed during the detachment or the flight.

The first prize was awarded to the UK’s Alpha team from Bearsden Academy in Glasgow and following Greece, the Portuguese Azorean Shearwater team from EBS Santa Maria, Vila do Porto in the Azores took third place.

“The standard of the projects was really high and the judges were very impressed by the professional attitude of the students,” said Helen Page, the ESA CanSat Project Coordinator. “They learned an enormous amount about space science, engineering and technology, as well as developing practical skills and experiencing the excitement of a launch campaign at a world-class rocket range.”

The 2012 European CanSat competition was organized by ESA’s Education Office in collaboration with the Norwegian Center for Space-related Education.
