Riera leaves Liverpool but stays Red

Riera leaves Liverpool but stays Red
Liverpool's Albert Riera has become the most expensive football transfer ever in Greece as Olympiakos agreed on Tuesday night to buy the Spanish player for the next four years. The former Espanyol and Bordeaux winger is expected in the next 24 hours in Piraeus to sign his contract of three plus one years that could set Olympiakos back by no less than 20 million euros including the player's wages until 2014.

After protracted negotiations in Piraeus with Riera's agent, Olympiakos managed to strike a deal that will strengthen the left side of the midfield of the Reds providing them with quality and experience that Olympiakos had badly needed since the retirement of Predrag Djordjevic last summer.

Although Olympiakos have not yet confirmed the deal pending the signing of the contract by the player, reports suggest that the Reds will pay Liverpool 4 million euros, plus 2 more million if Olympiakos win the Greek league. Riera's annual salary will come to 2.7 million euros and the taxes amount to 3 million.

Liverpool had spent some 12 million euros two years ago to acquire him.

Riera was born in 1982 in Mallorca, where he made his first inroads into football. His brother, Sito, plays for Panionios.
