Sport Relief Mile Run for Charity |

The Mile is part of a weekend of sporting activity which takes place across the UK on the 19-21 March, involving over half a million people. Celebrities, children, athletes and sports fans, able bodied and disabled, old and young, all join together to run, walk, wheel or even bounce a Mile for charity. The event is light-hearted fun, but for a serious cause. Sport Relief is organised by the British charity, Comic Relief, which since 1985 has raised over half a billion pounds to help vulnerable people in the world's poorest countries. Every year Comic Relief switches between using comedy and sport to give people an opportunity to raise funds for those less fortunate than themselves. In the UK Sport Relief has become a fixture in the national calendar with thousands of people taking part in local and national activities across the UK.
In Athens any money raised from the 3 Euro fee to participate will go directly to the Special Olympics Hellas charity. Events will start at 11:00 and end at 14:00. Dr. David Landsman, the British Ambassador to Greece, will signal the start of the race. At the finishing line, colleagues and friends will be ready to dish out a greulling regime of press-ups, star jumps, sit-ups to the person who raised the least cash!
Dr. David Landsman, British Ambassador said:
“We are very proud that British and Greek runners will be running a mile for Special Olympics Hellas. It’s inspiring to think that our contribution here is part of something international, as all over the world participants will be limbering up to take part in the Sport Relief Mile this weekend. Sport Relief is a major event in the UK, and with the Olympics and the Paralympics coming to London in 2012 it is appropriate that we are spreading the Sport Relief message globally. We are delighted that the community in Athens will be a part of this.”
The course will be of varying distances (1&3 miles) to cater for all abilities. You can also walk, hop, skip, crawl or generally cover the course any other way...... If you don't want to do any of the above then you can sponsor someone to do it for you! This will make for an ideal opportunity for a nice Sunday morning out: If it's sunny bring some chairs and have a picnic in the park - otherwise bring a coat/umbrella and then go to a nice Taverna for Sunday lunch afterwards.
