Handel's Theodora at Megaron Athens Concert Hall

Handel's Theodora at Megaron Athens Concert Hall
A dramatisation of George Frideric Handel's oratorio, Theodora, a story of love that ends in sacrifice, will be presented at the "Megaron" Athens Concert Hall on 13 March. Giorgos Petrou will conduct the Camerata of the Friends of Music Orchestra (with period instruments), while Paris Mexis is responsible for directing and for the visual production of Handel's masterpiece with images and interventions which infuse the work with a fresh approach and the technology of animation as a vehicle. The cast has an international flavour: the central role of Theodora is played by the outstanding Italian baroque singer, Emanuela Galli. Also appearing will be Kristina Hammarstroem in the role of Didymus; Irene Karayianni as Irene; Jason Darnell as Septimius; and Yiannis Yiannissis in the part of Valens. The Athens Mixed Municipal Choir will also be taking part under the direction of Stavros Beris. The construction and supervision of the scenery is by Vicky Roubeka.

Handel was 64 years old when he lifted his baton at Covent Garden in London to present his new oratorio, which unfortunately did not make a great impression on the English audience that night. As a result, the work was closed down after only three performances. Later generations discovered the emotional depth and intensity of the Theodora oratorio and today it is recognised as one of the most beautiful of its kind. Theodora is one of the few oratorios by George Frideric Handel which have no references to the Bible and its plot is the only one to take place in the Christian Period.

Don't miss George Frideric Handel's oratorio, Theodora, at the "Megaron" Athens Concert Hall on 13 March.
