Karditsa, Greece's bicycle capital

Karditsa, Greece's bicycle capital
An overwhelming 70 percent of the residents of the city of Karditsa, central Greece, use bicycles for transportation, according to a recent study by environmentalist Victoria Topouzi of the Karditsa Development Agency. According to the study Karditsa, which is situated in the heart of the Thessaly Plain, and due to its terrain, is one of the most conducive cities for the use of bicycles as a means of transport. Indeed, each family has more than one bicycle, while many families have a bicycle for each member, the study showed. Further, the bicycle is preferred by all social and financial groups of the local population, and regardless of place of residence (city center, surrounding districts).

The bicycle, an environment-friendly form of transport accessible to all ages and pockets, is used for work, entertainment, shopping and exercise, the study showed. The main purpose, however, is commuting to and from work, for adults, and for transport to and from school by children (37 percent), the study said.

Karditsa is one of the fifty-four prefectures of Greece. It is within the Thessaly periphery. It is mostly an agricultural prefecture. Capital of this prefecture is the city of Karditsa, a small city with a population 32.031 (2001). It is one of the prefectures that has no provinces. Karditsa is known for its beautiful countryside and friendly people. The building of Dimotiki Agora (Δημοτική Αγορά) or Public Market is found in the city and is one of UNESCO's protected cultural monuments.

The city is also an important centre of knowledge, as based there are the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Thessaly, the Faculty of Wood and Furniture Technology and the Faculty of Forestry Technology of the Educational an Technological Institution of Larissa. There is also a police academy.

Karditsa is about 300 kilometers from Athens and can be reached by bus or train from Athens and Thessaloniki. It is located SSE of Trikala, SW of Larissa and NE of Arta.

The western half of the prefecture is dominated by the Pindus mountains, famous for the Agrafa region of Greece.

There are no provinces in Karditsa.

Karditsa is bounded by Trikala to the north, Larissa to the east, Fthiotis to the southeast, Aitoloacarnania and Eurytania to the southwest and Arta to the west. The main rivers are Megdova to the south, one, another to the northwest to the east and the Pineios River to the north.
