Fasting is not all about religion

Fasting is not all about religion
Did you stop fasting when your mama stopped making you fast in order to go for your Holy Comm? Then, probably you should change your point of view and see fasting differently. The meaning of fasting during the “Sarakosti” has multiple extensions and touches different age and social groups in various ways. In recent years, several researches have shown that the orthodox fasting diary is the most appropriate nutritional method. “Sarakosti” is named after its duration which is forty (saranta) days. It starts on Clean Monday and lasts until the last Friday, before the Holy Week. The Holy Week is not part of the “Sarakosti”, and it has a special significance of its own. During “Sarakosti”, participants avoid the consumption of meat and its products, fish, dairy and olive oil, apart from some days.

According to scientists abstinence from meat, which is the main characteristic of c, is very beneficial, since we detoxicate and cholesterol levels fall. Also, nutrition with fibers from fruits and vegetables, helps the good function of the peptic system and the intestine in particular and it helps the defense of our system against cancer.

It doesn’t help to maintain just good health and balance, but also lifts our psychology, which we all need so much. Also, the sobriety needed to achieve fasting, is an exercize, which according to ancient Greek philosophers, strengthens our abilities in all sectors and trains our self discipline. It’s not by chance, that ancient Greek generals fasted before battles, while philosophers like Plato and Socrates followed a light nutrition in order to keep a clear mind.

The Athenian gastronomic map, offers various choices for fasting meals. There are several restaurants that offer sea food and other food for fasting. Also, in cookbooks you can find several fabulous recipes with the right ingredients for fasting, that don’t lack anything in taste and essence. All the prerequisites are there. The only thing needed is that you make the right decision, which is not hard to be made, if you think that by fasting you can loose weight in a very healthy way. Thus, it is time to fast, whether we believe or not. And in the end, there is the Easter lamb to award our patience!
