Deputy Mayor meets Ministry on security

Deputy Mayor meets Ministry on security
Deputy Mayor for Commercial Establishments and City Safety Andreas Papadakis represented Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis at a meeting held today at the Tourism Ministry concerning security in Athens, on the occasion of the peak tourist season.

In conveying Mayor Kaklamanis' longstanding position, Deputy Mayor Papadakis underlined the need to create the conditions for institutional and social mobilization so that the city - and particularly the city centre - can reflect an image of economic and social productivity and the day-to-day security needs of all citizens are met. Although clear steps have been taken in this direction, a solution can only be achieved through closer coordination of efforts on the part of all competent bodies.

The Deputy Mayor took the opportunity to outline City of Athens plans for the revival of the historic centre and the strategy it is implementing, which includes the pedestrianisation of Athinas St, the regeneration of the Psyrri area, the salvaging of abandoned buildings in Metaxourgio, the regeneration of Gazi and the upgrading of the Sofoklous St, Evripidou St, Koumoundourou Square and Theatrou Square axes.

The City of Athens is reinforcing these initiatives with the establishment of an extensive network of social services for disadvantaged social groups, namely through the operation of a Social Grocery, Social Pharmacy and the Athens Market, initiatives which are incorporated in the series of social services which the City of Athens Homeless Foundation offers on a daily basis.

Within the framework of efforts to safeguard the commercial sector, Deputy Mayor Papadakis noted that joint inspection teams, involving the City of Athens, the Athens Prefecture, the Development Ministry, the Economy Ministry and the Hellenic Police, are carrying out checks for black market trade. He added that the problem would be permanently solved when the global illicit trade network was rooted out and this could only be achieved through customs inspections and cooperation with corresponding authorities of neighbouring countries that also face this problem.
