Greens beat Jose Mourinho's men in Italy

Greens beat Jose Mourinho's men in Italy
Wednesday, November 26, 2008 : Inter 0 Panathinaikos 1

Panathinaikos achieved a historic win at the San Siro in Milan on Wednesday night as they downed Inter 1-0.

Spanish defender Josu Sarriegi scored the only goal of the game in the 70th minute to give his side their first ever win on Italian soil.

The goal came after a Panathinaikos corner. Captain Yiannis Goumas planted a powerful header in the bottom right-hand corner which Julio Cesar in the Inter goal did well to claw away.

But Sarriegi was on hand to poke the loose ball home to send the noisy 4,000 Panathinaikos fans wild.

The Greens deserved their win as they played with composure and pressed an Inter side that looked slightly disinterested.

The Greeks had to hang on in the final minutes, as Mario Galinovic pulled of an impressive save and then Julio Cruz blazed over with the last kick of the game after finding himself unmarked at a corner.

Panathinaikos are now second in their group on seven points, one behind Inter.

The Greens take on Anorthosis Famagusta in their last game in Athens. The Cypriots drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen and are now on six points.

This means that a draw at home on matchday six will be enough to see Panathinaikos through to the knockout stage.

Panathinaikos manager Henk ten Cate said that his players "fought like lions" and deserved the win, although he admitted that his team rode their luck during the game.

The Dutchman suggested that some people were too quick to criticise him and his team after their first games, adding that the fruit of their hard work was now starting to show.

"We must not forget that we have just started with this team. I am getting to know they players and they are getting to know me," he said.

"I don't score very often," said Sarriegi. "But this goal was very important for the players, the club, the fans and the people of Athens."
