St. Catherine's was founded in 1956 by the former British Ambassador to Greece, Sir Charles Peake and his wife Lady Catherine Peake. For the first seven years of its life, the school was housed in a prefabricated building in the back garden of the British Ambassadors Residence in Kolonaki in the heart of the city of Athens. When a new Chancery had to be built on the site St. Catherine's moved to a villa in Psychico where it remained until 1970, when the present site situated between the northern suburbs of Kifissia and Lycovrissi was acquired. Until 1997 St. Catherine's was a school educating pupils aged 3-13 years. Since then it has successfully expanded so that it now teaches pupils aged 3-18 years of age.Although the composition of the school community has changed significantly over the years, throughout its history, St. Catherine's has maintained a high reputation for the quality of education it offers. As well as being regarded as a distinguished centre of learning, the school has always been a focal point for many social and recreational activities that greatly extend its educational role and enable it to further embrace and reflect its proud identity as an international school serving and international community.Although a school registered with the Charity Commission in the UK and regarded as a not for profit organisation, St. Catherine's has never received any subsidies and thus relies entirely on income from fees to meet its operational costs. This has been the case over the course of history. However, it has benefited from numerous donations, both of money and materials, from firms and private individuals. Indeed, it was a generous grant from the Victoria Girlls School Trust in Alexandria that enabled the purchase of the land upon which the school now stands. The school is also indebted to its very active Parents and Teachers Support Association.
