Church of Panagia Hrysospiliotissa

This church is situated behind the Theatre of Dionysos, in a small grotto and can be reached by a rock path. The church is full of old pictures and icons. The church is built on the place of an ancient temple that was dedicated to Dionysos. That is the reason why two Ionic columns still can be seen above the chapel.

Moni Dafniou

The church is situated 30 minutes by bus from the town's centre. The church is dated to the 11th century and it is considered as the most important Byzantine monument of Attica. The temple was named after the Daphne laurels witch was sacred to Apollo. The church was destroyed by the Goths in the 4th century but an Ionic column can still be seen. The church has extremely fine mosaics considered as one of Greece's finest and represents saints, monks, apostles, prophets and guardian archangels. But the most impressive thing is the representation of the Christos Pantokrator (Christ in Majesty) in the centre of the dome. According to history, the monastery was sacked by the renegades of the Fourth Crusades. The church was rebuilt and occupied by monks until the War of Greek independence. It was then used as an army barrack and finally as a hospital for the mentally ill.

Moni Kaissarianis

The Moni of Kaissariani is situated 5km east of Athens near the top of Mont Hymettus. The Monastery is located in a beautiful area surrounded by pine trees, cypress trees and wild flowers. The church is dated to the 11th century and is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin. It was built on the place of an ancient temple dedicated to Demeter, a goddess of nature of Agriculture. A second temple erected there during the Roman period. The actual monastery was built using material from the Roman temple and that is the reason of the existence of four columns. The church's interior is also of great interest. There are beautiful frescoes dating from the 16th and 17th century. There is a spring located above the hill, source of the river Ilissos whose waters were once sacred to Aphrodite and therefore believed to cure infertility.
