Greece Elected to UNESCO Committee

Greece has been elected for the first time to the 24-member Intergovernmental Committee of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The election was effected following the close of the proceedings of the 4th General Assembly, held at the UNESCO HQ, in Paris, on June 8.

In a press release, issued on June 11, Culture and Tourism Ministry hailed Greece's election as of paramount importance, committing to support and deepen the implementation of the Convention by undertaking concrete measures.

The purpose of the Convention -which entered into force in 2006 and has been ratified by 143 member states- is to safeguard the intangible cultural heritage, ensure respect for the intangible cultural heritage of the communities, groups and individuals concerned, raise awareness at local, national and international levels, as well as ensuring mutual appreciation thereof, and provide for international cooperation and assistance.
