How does your Boss affect your self image?A recent study in PlosOne examined the effects of having your "boss" in your immediate proximity and the effect that this has on your self esteem. When shown various portraits, respondents overall tend to react first when they see their own face, a sign that they value their own self more. This study explores the change in this behavior as seen in the presence of one's boss. When asked to press a buzzer at the sight of their boss's face, Chinese students did so at a faster rate than they did when asked to press the buzzer at the sight of their own face, thus exhibiting an advantage towards the other's face over their own. Did this happen across all cultures? The study asked the same of European Americans and found that this population did not react faster to their boss's face; they exhibited "self-face advantage." However, European Americans did start to exhibit a lower self-face advantage when they also rated their bosses as having a higher social status than theirs. In other words, the fact alone that a boss has a higher job position was not enough to decrease the self-face advantage exhibited by a European-American respondent; however the fact that the boss had a higher social status than one's own DID change that behavior. more from business »
